## **A word from the Chair of Trustees**

Waste Not Want Not Battersea (WNWNB) was incorporated as a charity in February 2020, at which time we could not have predicted the events that were about to unfold and the demand for redistribution of food in the local community. By the end of March 2020 the Coronavirus Pandemic was spreading through the UK thus forcing a national lockdown. People were being asked to stay at home, those vulnerable to illness were advised to self- isolate in case of infection and panic buying depleted food & essential supplies in supermarkets. Meanwhile, restaurants, cafes, oces, shops and public venues were closed for business resulting in enormous quantities of food in the New Covent Garden Market and other wholesalers potentially going to waste.

Overnight demand for the service that WNWNB provided increased dramatically. Our founder, Hadas, reported 10 times more produce that would have been going to waste in the market, becoming available for collection and redistribution. With the help of a growing number of volunteers, WNWNB was able to deliver food parcels to the doors of individuals and families in isolation. Other vulnerable local residents were referred to WNWNB by the local authority.

In April 2020, WNWNB received funding from Wandsworth local authority (WLA) to provide meals for designated children during the school holidays at Yvonne Carr Centre (YCC). The association with WLA and YCC continues over 18 months later.

In May 2020 WNWNB began working from Platform One Café, the local authority owned venue adjacent to Providence House Youth Club on Falcon Road, SW11. WNWNB has been cooking meals and sharing food

2

from Platform One ever since. A weekly food sharing service was also established at The Venue on the Doddington & Rollo Estate and the aforementioned Yvonne Carr Centre.

Other notable achievements during the course of 2020-21 included:

- Developing a working partnership with St Michael’s Church Battersea to share food and meals from their kitchen to local residents.

- Teaming up with Battersea Arts Centre and Riverside Radio to deliver an Art & Community project.

- Pop up socially distanced fundraising through cooking themed meals for takeaway

- Working with a number of new chefs, drivers, porters, kitchen hands, most of whom worked as volunteers

On behalf of the board of trustees I’d like to thank our brilliant founder Hadas and her team for the tireless and selfless work that they carried out over the 12 months from March 2020 - March 2021. In a time of great anxiety and distress for many, WNWNB rose to the challenges of working in a pandemic in order to support and provide for the local community in Battersea and prevent considerable food waste. People have been united through the volunteer programme and partnerships with local organisations have been forged. We look forward to continuing and developing these partnerships over the coming years. I’d also like to thank all our funders whose generosity and belief has helped establish WNWNB as a pillar of the community in extra-ordinary times.

## **Achievements and Performance**

_Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole._

## **Introduction**

Founded in 2017, Waste Not Want Not Battersea (WNWNB) collects surplus fruit and vegetable and other produce from nearby markets and distributes it through the local community and youth centres. We have built relationships with New Covent Garden market traders, wholesale importers and other retailers and now save around 750-1000kg of food every week and successfully focus on reaching those most at risk of food poverty and in need of nutritious produce. WNWNB was founded out of an exasperation of seeing food wasted when many in our community are in need. The organisation is grass roots and grew organically, originally a group of volunteers picking up and sharing food.

In response to Covid-19, we mobilised and adapted our work to focus on providing food care packages and meals to the most vulnerable and socially isolated residents across Battersea and other parts of Wandsworth. We rapidly scaled up our operations during the first lockdown, increasing our food collections from once to five days a week, intercepting the larger quantities of food surplus due to disruption to the food supply chain. We expanded to three hubs located strategically across Battersea and began running food sharing five times a week. Simultaneously, and a first for the organisation, we began an emergency food delivery service, transporting fresh produce and cooked meals to vulnerable and isolated individuals. We recruited brilliant volunteer chefs, who cooked about 80 meals a day out of surplus produce we had rescued. These meals were delivered to those isolating, NHS workers, struggling families, or otherwise vulnerable individuals.

After lockdown began to ease in 2021, a key priority for Waste Not Want Not Battersea was to continue our regular food sharing work and make the model sustainable for the organisation long term. Our increased schedule of food sharing revealed to us both the need in Battersea for fresh, nutritious food and also the availability of surplus ingredients available. Therefore, it was essential to us that we find a way to sustain this food sharing work, despite the fact that we had significantly less resources than during the pandemic, both in terms of volunteer time (where people had been on furlough), and financials (emergency grants during the pandemic). We have been successful in maintaining these food sharing sessions throughout 2020 and 2021, and have sustained a timetable of weekly food sharing, 4-5 times a week at four different

4

locations. To sustain this work we secured funding from a number of grant making bodies (listed below), plus fundraising through covid-compliant events (delivery service fundraising meals).

## **Who uses our services?**

While we successfully focus on reaching those most at risk of food poverty and in need of nutritious produce, our food sharing is open to everyone without means testing or stigma. We are committed to reducing food waste and anyone who is eating our food is helping us tackle this by eating surplus produce.

We believe our model is a sustainable, long term approach to tackle food poverty. Because our food is surplus, we are not reliant on financial donations to cover the source of food. We are free from the ‘giver’ and ‘receiver’ model, because our primary aim is reducing food waste and we are creating a social value in eating our food that is in addition to feeding people purely out of a ‘giving’ necessity. We aim to tackle stigma by reminding people when they eat our food that they are helping the environment, and our charity, by eating surplus produce.

Covid-19 exacerbated the risk of food poverty for vulnerable groups we support, including a growing number of people experiencing financial diculties due to being made unemployed and waiting for universal credit. Our three hubs are placed strategically across Battersea and the primary areas we serve are the Doddington, Winstanley, Patmore and Savona estates, all of which rank highly in the indices of deprivation. Our main hub is at 9-10 Bramlands close, serving Latchmere and the Winstanley estate.

While attendance at food sharing sessions vary, on average each session sees 20-30 individuals collecting a bag of fresh produce that would otherwise have been wasted. Each week we save around 1000kg of food from going to waste which is redistributed in the local community. We have been building up networks of people interested in ‘ad hoc’ food sharing sessions, which we run at various locations when we have additional produce to share. This along with other activities have steadily raised the profile of Waste Not Want Not Battersea as a food waste prevention organisation, raising awareness locally of the work we do.

## **Covid-19 Response**

As well as a comprehensive schedule of food sharing and meal deliveries, we contributed to the Battersea wide community response to the pandemic, taking part in regular meetings with Wandsworth Food Partnership and were regularly in touch with Wandsworth social work department, who are one of many organizations that refer people to our services, particularly during lockdowns. Other services which referred people to us include Wandsworth Early Years services, Katherine Low Settlement, Community District Nurses and GPs, St Mungo’s Homeless Charity.

## **Volunteers**

5

We had a huge number of volunteers in 2020 and 2021. During the first 2020 lockdown we had 5-10 volunteers supporting our operation each day, including people on furlough, plus local school teachers and Chefs from Tate Britain.

We have been able to give volunteering opportunities to young people from partner organisations like FAST London Youth Club, Providence House Youth Club, as well as Duke of Edinburgh Award Volunteer placement. We’ve offered a number of skilling up opportunities to volunteers, such as food hygiene training and certificates. We are proud that our volunteers come from every part of the Battersea Community, from young people to School PTA boards, to refugees.

## **Easter Holiday Hunger Project April 2020**

In the 2020 Easter holidays we partnered with Sacred Heart and St Mary’s Primary schools to run a ‘holiday hunger’ project for their students on free school meals. We were contracted by the organisation School Food Matters to deliver a program of hot meals for children on free school meals. We cooked 180 meals per day alongside the food sharing we were running.

## **Lunches for free school meal families November 2020 - April 2021**

_In partnership with St Michael’s Church. Schools involved: Ark Bolingbroke School, Belleville School, Honeywell School, Westbridge School, Grin School, Chesterton School, St Mary’s School, Kingsdale School._

During the November 2020 lockdown we wanted to support families whose children were missing out on free school meals they would have been receiving had they been attending school. We formed a partnership with St Michael's Church Battersea to come and cook in their space every Tuesday. We reached out to local schools and received 56 referrals for families in need of weekly meals. Each week our volunteer professional chef would cook a hot meal, which would be delivered to these 56 households (a total of 112 children) alongside a bag of fresh groceries and dried goods for the rest of the week. This project ran from November 2020 through to April 2021 We recruited a new cohort of volunteers for this project, who have continued to be vital supporters of our work.

## **Christmas Dinner Project 2020 & 2021**

For the previous three Christmases we have hosted a large community meal where people can drop in all day, be fed and enjoy others' company at the Venue Community Centre in Doddington Estate. Obviously the pandemic meant that this was not possible, so we adapted our operations to a delivery service and on Christmas Day we delivered meals to 200 people. Everyone received a meal, plus a gift box with sweet treats, gifts and crackers. As well as people who had requested a meal or been referred , towards the end of the day, and while we were out delivering we also received a number of urgent requests for food and were able to deliver emergency food and gift boxes in the evening.

6

In 2021, we re-ran the Christmas dinner project, providing hundreds of meals and produce to anyone in need over the Christmas period . We operated a collection service from our hub 9-10 Bramlands close, both on the 24th and 25th December, with about people collecting on each day. We also made deliveries to those who had been referred by various services or friends and family, either because they are vulnerable, isolating or otherwise in need. This project was in partnership with Providence House, who provided space and volunteers, and St Marks Church, who donated 250 'bags of kindness' Christmas parcels of treats and gifts which had been made up by their volunteers. Most of the local homeless population were fed, plus of the people who had been referred to us by various services were delivered to. Overall we fed around 150 individuals.

## **Education and outreach around food waste**

Education and raising awareness around food waste is a key component of all the work that Waste Not Want Not Want Not Battersea do. In all of our food sharing and other activities, we include information for our service users about where the food has come from and the fact that they are helping to reduce food waste by eating our food. We also do the same for any catering work we do for fundraising, all with the aim of gradually building awareness around food waste.

This year, CEO Hadas Hagos has given educational talks at primary and Secondary Schools, at local community groups and on local radio. We also worked with a local filmmaker to make an educational film about the ‘lifecycle’ of food and food waste. We also partnered with Battersea Arts Centre, where we were teamed up with artists Hunt and Darton and Riverside Radio to create a community based art project.

As an organisation we are very active on social media talking about all the steps that we take to tackle food waste and redistribute food. We have steadily built a social media following which includes many key local stakeholders with large followings eg. other community organisations, local decision makers and politicians.

WASTE NOT WANT NOT BATTERSEA Independent Examiners Report to the Trustees

## For the period ended 31 March 2021

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charitable company for the period ended 31 March 2021.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity Trustees, who are also directors for the purposes of company law, are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

## **Independent examiners statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
