Message from the Chair of Trustees
2023 saw the global escalation of food insecurity, compounded by climate events and ongoing conflicts. Bangladesh, heavily reliant on agricultural productivity, is particularly vulnerable to climate impacts, such as devastating floods and unpredictable weather patterns, which threaten food security for countless families. Additionally, disruptions in global food supplies have put further pressure on food prices, straining the resources of low-income communities.
Together, with your continued support, we are committed to addressing these pressing issues with immediate relief measures and by working to build long-term resilience within the communities we serve.
In 2023 we continued to serve the poor and vulnerable and delivered aid to hundreds of individuals and families. In December 2023 the Board of Trustees were in Bangladesh to oversee the delivery of our Education Scholarship and Winter Blanket programmes. We took the opportunity to review some of the projects Smilez has delivered since its inception, including the Houses and Water Wells we have built. They spoke to the beneficiaries of our projects who were all grateful for the positive impact we have had on their lives and on the wider community. I encourage you all to visit our YouTube channel where you can see the review videos, along with videos of all our projects.

For 2024, Smilez will continue to make a difference to help relieve poverty and distress. Thank you for standing with us in this journey to create a brighter, more secure future for all.
Guljar Hussain
Chair of the Board of Trustees

Education scholarship
20 students without the means to fund their education were provided with a scholarship to continue their education.
20 school students were nominated for their high performance. These students were from poor families who without the scholarship award would not be able to continue their education. The award was made to help pay their admission fees, textbooks and other study materials. This project was entirely funded by Gift Aid payment received from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (UK HMRC).

Plans for 2024
Over the last few years we have established our core projects, making the end-toend process from fundraising through to implementation, efficient and effective. We have also expanded our area of operation in Bangladesh, enabling us to serve a wider set of communities. Next year we will continue to deliver these core projects and continue to expand our areas of operation.
At Smilez we beleve in empowering people to help them change their own lives, ‘give a person a fish you feed them for a day, teach a person to fish and they feed themselves for a lifetime’. Therefore, in 2024 we plan to deliver a project that enables people to create a livelihood for themselves and their families by providing them with the tools they need.
The entire team at Smilez is looking forward to 2024 and firmly believe that we can continue to bring smiles to peoples’ lives.

In preparing those financial statements, the Trustees are required to:

Statement of Financial Activities
Our source of income this year was donations from the public and Gift Aid. The charity expenses have been purely related to administration fees i.e. bank transfer fees, promotional materials, website hosting. All expenses have been taken from the 25% Gift Aid donations provided by the government. This has allowed the charity to uphold its 100% donation policy.

Independent Examiner’s Report
I report on the financial statement of the charity for the period ended 31st December 2023.
This report is made solely to the charity’s Trustees, as a body, in accordance with section 145 and the regulations made under section 154 of the Charities Act 2011. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the charity’s trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an independent examiner’s report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity’s trustees as a body, for my work, for this report, or for the opinions I have formed.
Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner
The Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements. The Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this period under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
Having satisfied myself that the company is not subject to audit under charity or company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:
-
examine the financial statements under section 145 of the Act.
-
follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act; and
-
state whether matters have come to my attention
Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements, and seeks explanations from the Trustees, concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the financial statements.
Page 17
Independent Examiner’s Statement
During my examination, no matter has come to my attention: -
1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 130 of the Act; and
-
to prepare financial statements which accord with the accounting records and comply with accounting requirements of the Act and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities have not been met; or
2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.
