We are immensely humbled in serving the poor and the vulnerable and value the privilege to be able to deliver aid to hundreds of individuals and families. We have come a long way from distributing Ramadan food packs and winter blankets to building homes, constructing water wells and providing educational scholarships. As we reflect on the many achievements, we would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to all of our donors and well-wishers for their continued support. We would also like to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers for their commitment, dedication, passion and hard work. Smilez continues to make a difference in maximising the impact of its projects to help relieve poverty and distress. As another year unfolds we are passionate and committed to bringing more smiles to peoples’ lives. Guljar Hussain _Chair of the Board of Trustees_ Page 2 ## **Trustees Report** The Trustees of Smilez present their first Annual Report and Financial Statement for the period from the date of incorporation of the charity on 30[th] January 2020 to the 31[st] December 2020. The Trustees confirm that the Annual Report and Financial statements of the charity comply with the current statutory requirements, the requirements of the charity's governing document and the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities" applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 01 January 2015). Page 3 ## **Structure, Governance and Management** ## **Governing Constitution** Smilez is a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO). The charity was established by Constitution and registered with the UK Charity Commission on 6[th] February 2020, under registration number 1187799. It is governed by a constitution adopted on 30[th] January 2020. ## **Organisational Structure** The Trustees are responsible for the governance of the charity and the day-to-day management is performed by the Trustees and a volunteer run management committee. All Trustees and volunteers give their time voluntarily and receive no remuneration or other benefits. The Trustees meet regularly and are responsible for the decisions taken in relation to running the Charity. ## **Risk Management** The Trustees have assessed the risks the charity faces and the nature of those risks. The Trustees review risks regularly and strengthen their perspective on this issue through meetings. The Trustees are satisfied that systems are in place, or arrangements are in hand to manage the risks which have been identified. ## **Volunteers** Volunteers are involved in all our charity projects and meet regularly at team meetings. We make the necessary checks to ensure volunteers carry the appropriate traits for the organization and understand charity objectives. ## **Public Benefit** The Trustees confirm that they have considered the general guideline issued by the Charity Commission in connection with Public Benefit in setting the objectives of the Charity. Page 6 ## **RAMADAN 2020 – Feed the Poor** - Food packages for 300 families - 30 Days of food = 9,000 meals - Total Raised £10,500 Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 many families & individuals were in a state of emergency and desperately needed our help. Smilez delievered food packages that contained rice, flour, cooking oil and cash to purchase fresh produce. ## **EID-UL-ADHA 2020 – Qurbani** - Meat for 400 families in Bangladesh - Meat for 80 families in Gambia - Total Raised £3,150 During the festival of Eid-ul Adha, Smilez provided quality, fresh and premium portions of meat to families in Bangladesh and 80 families in Gambia who can not afford to eat quality meats on a regular basis. Smilez partnered with the People Empowerment Life Project (PELP) to deliver Qurbani in Gambia. Page 7 ## **BUILD A HOME** - Two Homes being built - Total Raised £6,000 Smilez is building homes for two families who were living in very poor conditions. The homes are being built to last many years sheltering them from all weather conditions. One home is complete with the other due to complete February 2021. ## **COMMUNAL DEEP TUBE WELL** - Two Deep Tube Wells - Water serving over 100 families - Total Raised £2,400 Smilez is installing deep tube well in two villages in Bangladesh. The wells providing pure and clean water for families who do not have access to clear water. The installations were completed in January 2021. Page 8 ## **WINTER CAMPAIGN** - 302 Thermal Blankets were distributed - Total Raised £3,020 The winters in Bangladesh can get very cold and leads to many deaths. Smilez distributed blankets to those living rough on the streets and those living in shanty town areas of Sylhet town, Bangladesh. ## **EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP** - 10 Education Scholarships funded by Gift Aid - 10 students from poor families - £50 awarded to each student Within the deprived area of Bangladesh, ten local school students were nominated for their high performance. These students were from poor families and the award was made to help pay their admission fees, textbooks and other study materials required. Page 9 ## **MARKETING, MEDIA AND FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS** This year our Smilez volunteers in the UK have been busy supporting fundraising activities whilst our volunteers in Bangladesh have supported the delivery of our projects. Our marketing and media team have created several posters and videos and used our social media channels to engage with our donors. Smilez has also been featured in many local and national print media and TV news channels for its campaigns in Bangladesh. The Smilez team also took part in the walk for water challenge to raise money for the Communal Tube Wells. A 6km solidarity walk carrying 5 litres of water. Smilez is committed to ensure we adhere to the Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Fundraising Practice, data protection requirements and charity legislation to ensure that our fundraising activities are legally compliant, transparent, and reflect best practices. Page 10 Plans for 2021 Whilst this has been a successful first year for Smilez we are confident that we can achieve more by continuing to make improvements and learn from the projects we have already delivered this year. Therefore, as well as continuing to build on our major projects initiated this year, we seek to develop further projects. In particular we are keen to diversify our areas of operation to other area of Bangladesh and also other parts of the world. To do this we will seek to develop partnerships with trusted organisations and volunteer networks who can help us deliver projects in country. We recognise that our donors and supporters play a fundamental part in the success of the projects delivered by Smilez. Therefore in 2021 we aim to increase our social media presence to engage more regularly with our donors and hopefully increase the number of donors and supporters. The entire team at Smilez is looking forward to 2021 and firmly believe that we can continue to bring smiles to peoples lives. Page 11 ## Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities The Trustees are required to prepare financial statements for each financial year in compliance with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and all other applicable law which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Charity and the incoming resources and application of resources, including the net income and expenditure for the year. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. In preparing those financial statements, the Trustees are required to: - select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; - make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; - state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and - prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis, unless it is inappropriate to presume that the Charity will continue to operate. The Trustees confirm that the accounts comply with current statutory requirements. The charity expenses have been purely related to administration fees i.e. bank transfer fees, promotional materials, website hosting. All expenses have been taken from the 25% Gift Aid donations provided by the government. This has allowed the charity to uphold its 100% donation policy. This report is made solely to the charity’s Trustees, as a body, in accordance with section 145 and the regulations made under section 154 of the Charities Act 2011. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the charity’s trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an independent examiner’s report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity’s trustees as a body, for my work, for this report, or for the opinions I have formed. ## **Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner** The Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements. The Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this period under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) and that an independent examination is needed. Having satisfied myself that the company is not subject to audit under charity or company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to: - examine the financial statements under section 145 of the Act; - follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act; and - state whether particular matters have come to my attention ## **Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report** My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements, and seeks explanations from the Trustees, concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the financial statements. Page 15 ## **Independent Examiner’s Statement** In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention:- - 1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: - to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 130 of the Act; and - to prepare financial statements which accord with the accounting records and comply with accounting requirements of the Act and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities have not been met; or - 2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.
