Gang Warily Scout & Guide HQ
Charity Commission Trustee’s Annual Report
Chairman’s Report
We manage and run Gang Warily Scout & Guide HQ. Our main activities are relating to scouting and guiding. We facilitate and support the Rainbow, Beaver, Brownie, Cub, Guide, Scout & Ranger groups that are run from our HQ. Our groups have been running for about 50 years now.
We do not have any paid staff members. All of our committees and groups are run for us by volunteers. Unfortunately, Covid lockdowns made some of our long-standing volunteers re-evaluate their lives and several resigned. Our scout troop has had to do some major advertising and recruitment to recruit new volunteer leaders. They are almost back to full strength again.
Our groups are for children and young people aged from 5-18 years old. In 2021 we were able reopen our doors for face-to-face sessions, after the Covid 19 lockdowns ended. Our groups have started up again, but some are busier than others.
At our groups our children and young people take part in lots of different activities and are able to gain lots of badges. The children and young people get to meet new friends and learn vital life skills to help them in their future lives. Some of our young people have gone on to become volunteer leaders themselves.
We are a fully inclusive group and are based in an area of deprivation. So, we do everything that we can to support all of our volunteers, children, young people and their families. Due to Covid restrictions we have not been able to take part in other local community events this last year. We have also been very restricted with the community fundraising events that we were able to run at our HQ this year.
In 2021 we again worked with two other local groups to run Waterside Christmas Appeal, to support local families who were struggling to be able to provide their children with Christmas gifts due to Covid and local poverty. It was another great success.
Our HQ is made up of three very old temporary wooden modular buildings that were donated to us in 1983. We were told that the buildings were already about 30+ years old, but the company that donated them to us, thought that we would probably get another 10 years out of them. However almost 40 years later we are still using them, but they are in a very bad state of repair and we have become an easy target for vandals. In 2018 we started a fundraising campaign to raise money to build a new HQ. Covid put a stop to a lot of our fundraising efforts so we are still a very long way off from achieving our goal of building a new HQ. However, we still want to be an active part of our local community so we have carried on with our fundraising efforts and by 30 September 2021 we had now raised just over £65000. We have also been in talks with our local council as we need to renew our lease as well.
