## DR GEOFFREY SMITH Director of Operations 1939-2025

Geoff Smith was born in Leicester in 1939, the eldest of three children. His family were Methodists, whose lives revolved around school, work and the local church. Geoff himself was deeply involved in The Boys’ Brigade rising to the rank of Warrant Officer.

In 1962, Geoff and his fiancée Dorothy (also from a well established Methodist family) married and that same year moved to Ilford, Essex where they joined the local church and became youth club leaders. This was when Geoff and I first met. My late wife and I soon developed a close and enduring friendship with them both. Geoff selected Kings College London over Cambridge University to study Physics. He was awarded a BSc Hons as well as an AKC in Theology, and ultimately a PhD. He decided to leave scientific research in favour of teaching and taught in many schools across the country. His final teaching post before retiring at the age of 57 was as Headmaster at Mayflower County High School, a large comprehensive in Billericay.

Upon retirement he decided to move to the West Country and he began to undertake work as a Sub Post Office “Relief Manager“, covering for other Sub Postmasters during their holidays. Soon, Ted Hudson (founder of Bibles for Children) approached Geoff about his idea to establish a charity to provide bibles to primary school aged children. Geoff persuaded Ted to use a type of bible that young children would be attracted to read. So started Bibles for Children which was founded in 1997. Geoff was instrumental in setting up the systems that we still use today – all workable, foolproof and triple-checked to ensure the Charity was in the best position to be able to forge ahead into the future.

Geoff will be sorely missed by so many: by his family and friends, by the Trustees and staff of Bibles for Children and especially by me.

## REPORT FROM THE CHAIR for the year ending 31 July 2025

I am very pleased to be able to report that in the past year of _Bibles for Children_ , the Trustees were able to help nearly 23,500 young children to have their very own Bible. A total of 23,421 children were given Bibles in 425 primary schools throughout the United Kingdom. 55 of these were schools being added to the Charity’s database for the first time. 11 schools had ‘Re-start’ Presentations and 359 took part in the Charity’s ‘Follow-on’ Scheme. Some of the new schools that the Charity helped were in Wales where over 150 Welsh-speaking children received a copy of Beibl y Plant, the Welsh language version of the Children’s Bible.

During the year the Trustees welcomed Peter Bradshaw to the Board as a new Trustee. Peter brings a wealth of experience to the Board. He undertook teacher training at St Mary’s in Twickenham and a Master’s Degree at Sussex University. He worked in a number of Catholic schools in Birmingham before taking up a secondary school headship in West Sussex. He went on to become Principal of St Brendan’s Sixth Form College in Bristol and then served as Co-Director of the Department for Schools and Colleges in the Clifton Diocese.

On a sadder note I have to report the death of Ted Hudson who died at home on 13 October 2024. As Founder of the Charity in 1997 he was the driving force behind his vision to enable children to have their own copy of the Bible. Tributes were paid to him in the local newspapers.

It is also with sadness that I have to tell you that Geoff Smith, Director of Operations, died after a short stay at Clare Hall Nursing Home, Ston Easton, on 3 August 2025. His phenomenal grasp of figures and spreadsheets, and his clear understanding of the Charity’s relationship with the Charity Commission, enabled the smooth running of the operational side of the Charity.

Looking to the future the Trustees have commissioned a new website to reflect the changes that we are making to enable the Charity to meet the needs of an ever-changing world. The front page will be ‘live’ from the beginning of September 2025 and the back pages will follow soon after. The new site has a vibrant look to it and it will be possible to order bibles and also to donate through the website.

Furthermore, as the Charity moves forward we are looking to strengthen our existing team by recruiting two part-time new members – a Financial Assistant and a Development Officer – and these posts will be advertised in September.

I should like to express my personal thanks and that of my fellow Trustees to all the charitable trusts, churches, and individuals whose help is vital to the ongoing work of _Bibles for Children_ in all parts of the United Kingdom. It is our prayerful hope that this support will continue.

## WHAT THEY SAY . . .

We received copies of your puzzle book for our Year 6 pupils in our Primary School. We are almost at the end of the puzzle book and would like to pass on our feedback.

_“We have found the puzzle books to be fantastic. Each page has a different Bible story and teaching point for the children. It was great that each day had the Bible references at the top so the children could refer to the bible story – this was also an excellent way of helping them become more confident with finding references in their Bible. The activities were interactive and had a huge range and variety, so the children were always engaged and excited to complete each page. The activities were also very user friendly – all abilities were able to complete them. Thank you for the opportunity to trial these."_

## H H H H H H

_"Having already scanned through the copy you sent us I can say for certain that the children will enjoy completing the activities. They look to have a great mix of puzzles, codes and quizzes which they will love, whilst not realising how much knowledge they are gaining. Thank you again, we look forward to receiving the booklets."_

## H H H H H H

_"Thank you so much for the booklets, we are hoping to start them during our session this afternoon. We really appreciate that they are currently a free resource, they are such good quality and look so engaging. With thanks and appreciation."_

## H H H H H H

_"Also could you please thank Elaine Martin for the Old and New testament puzzle books. We have given them to our Year 6 pupils today. The teachers and pupils were happy with them. A lovely story for you._

_One Year 6 child unexpectedly was withdrawn from school a month ago by her parents that have decided to home school. The one item that the child requested was her Bible. Please join me in prayer for her and our 46 year 6 pupils that will take their bibles home next week - that they can begin to fathom the depths of God's love for them."_

## INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF BIBLES FOR CHILDREN (‘the CIO’)

CIO Registration: 1187754 (England & Wales) and SC050350 (Scotland) and recognised as a Section 167 charity in Northern Ireland

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the CIO for the year ended 31[st] July 2025.

## Responsibilities and basis of report

As the trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements Regulations 20 required by charity law to be audited and have chosen instead to have an independent examination.

counts carried out under section 44(1)(c) of the 2005 Act and section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed the requirements of Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

Since the CIO has prepared its accounts on an accruals basis and is also registered in Scotland your examiner must be a member of a body listed in Regulation 11(2) of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). I can confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a registered member of the Association of Accounting Technicians which is one of the listed bodies.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the CIO as required by section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and section 130 of the 2011 Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements Regulation 8 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## GOVERNANCE

**Going concern** – With the current level of cash and stock resources, and the ongoing and expected future contributions from its supporters, the Trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity can continue in its current mode of operation for the foreseeable future. They continue to believe that the "Going concern" basis of accounting is appropriate in preparing the annual financial statements.

**Risk assessment** – The Trustees have identified the major risks to which the charity is exposed, and systems have been established to mitigate those risks. These will be reviewed annually or earlier if the need arises.

**Policies** – Policies on Safeguarding, Data Protection, Conflict of Interest, Pandemic Risk Assessment, Privacy, and Reserves have been reviewed and approved by the Trustees. They are displayed on the charity’s website **www.biblesforchildren.org.uk** and hard copies can be obtained by emailing **bibles4children2@aol.com** .
