Bibles for Children (Founded 1997) ANNUAL REPORT & ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR 1 AUGUST 2023[to ] 31 JULY 2024
Registered CIO Charity No. 1187754 (England & Wales) and SC050350 (Scotland) and recognised as a Section 167 charity in Northern Ireland
27 YEARS OF BIBLE GIVING
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT for the year ending 31 July 2024
It is pleasing to report that, in its 27th year since Bibles for Children was established in 1997, the Trustees were able to help almost 30,000 young children to have their very own Bible. In all 29,565 children received a Bible in 465 schools throughout the United Kingdom. 74 of these were new schools added to the charity’s database, 20 schools received “restart” presentations and 371 used the charity’s follow-on scheme. Since June 1997 740,189 Bibles have been presented in 2,510 schools. Some of the new schools helped were in Wales where, thanks to the work of our Welsh Associate, Mrs Janet Hawking and her team, over 1,500 Welsh speaking children received a copy of Beibl y Plant, the Welsh language version of the Children’s Bible.
A further large printing of the Children’s Bible was taken into stock during the year. This should be adequate for the work in our 28th year, but further printings of Beibl y Plant and the Rainbow Good News Bible are likely to be required during 2025. The Trustees anticipate that the costs of printing, distribution and administration are likely to face significant increases in the coming year.
The Bible Puzzle Books mentioned in my previous report have proved to be very popular. Originated by Robyn Welsby, a helper with our work in Wales, they are offered to all schools which place an order for Bibles for their pupils. Over 3,400 copies of the first of these on the New Testament were taken into stock, and during the year 1,900 children received a copy. Stock is held in and sent out from Timsbury. Robyn has revised her Puzzle book on the Old Testament and the Trustees plan to offer these to children in due course.
During the year the Trustees welcomed Mrs Marion Miller as the new Minutes Secretary. Marion is a retired Primary School Headteacher with a vast experience and brings many talents to the post.
On a sadder note, due to age (I am nearing my 95th birthday) and physical problems, the time has come for me to stand down as Chairman of Bibles for Children. The Reverend Paul Stephens, a member of the Board, was unanimously elected and welcomed by the Trustees as the new Chairman. I will continue to serve on the Board for as long as I can help.
I wish to express my personal thanks and that of the Trustees to all the charitable trusts, churches, and private individuals whose help has been so vital in the expansion of the work to all parts of the United Kingdom. We prayerfully ask that this support will continue.
The accounts have been prepared on the accruals basis and independently examined according to the requirements of the Charity Commission and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator by Paxton Independent Examiners.
This being my last report, it is good to be able to confirm that the charity is in good hands to continue the work begun in 1997. As they have done in the past, the Trustees are already planning to make changes necessary to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world. I wish to express my grateful thanks to them for all their hard work and support in the past. I send my best wishes to the new Chairman and the Trustees and also to all the Associates, Representatives and helpers as together we seek to fulfil the objectives of the charity. With over 18,000 Primary Schools in the United Kingdom, the need for Bibles for Children to continue its work is clear.

FROM THE NEW CHAIRMAN
Hello, let me introduce myself. My name is Paul Stephens and I have taken on the role of Chair of Bibles for Children following the stepping down of Ted Hudson. I would like to express my thanks for the way Ted has led the Charity since he founded it in 1997 and has built a solid foundation on which to go forward.
I hail from Bristol and originally studied music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, after which I taught music at two comprehensive schools in Bristol. Having felt called to being ordained I left teaching to train at Trinity College, Bristol. I served my curacy in North Devon, before being appointed Rector of Norton Fitzwarren and Anglican Chaplain to St Augustine’s School (Taunton), then nine years as Chaplain at Monkton Combe School (Bath), finally moving back into parish ministry leading three churches in the Chew Valley. I am now retired and living in Timsbury with my wife, Lesley, and Mr Bumble, the cat.
I am very excited to be working with such a dedicated and enthusiastic team of Trustees. I strongly believe that Bibles for Children is moving into a new phase which is both exciting and vibrant. Please continue to pray for all who are involved in the work of the Charity.
With all good wishes,
Paul Stephens

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Bibles for Children (‘the CIO’) CIO Registration: 1187754 (England & Wales) and SC050350 (Scotland) and recognised as a Section 167 charity in Northern Ireland
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the CIO for the year ended 31[st] July 2024.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities and Trustees Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 (the ‘2005 Act’), the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’). You are satisfied that your charity is not required by charity law to be audited and have chosen instead to have an independent examination.
I report in respect of my examination of the CIO’s accounts carried out under section 44(1)(c) of the 2005 Act and section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed the requirements of Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent examiner’s statement
Since the CIO has prepared its accounts on an accruals basis and is also registered in Scotland your examiner must be a member of a body listed in Regulation 11(2) of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). I can confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a registered member of the Association of Accounting Technicians which is one of the listed bodies.
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
-
accounting records were not kept in respect of the CIO as required by section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and section 130 of the 2011 Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those records; or
-
the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements Regulation 8 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

GOVERNANCE
Going concern – With the current level of cash and stock resources, and the ongoing and expected future contributions from its supporters, the Trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity can continue in its current mode of operation for the foreseeable future. They continue to believe that the "Going concern" basis of accounting is appropriate in preparing the annual financial statements.
Risk assessment – The Trustees have identified the major risks to which the charity is exposed, and systems have been established to mitigate those risks. These will be reviewed annually or earlier if the need arises.
Policies – Policies on Safeguarding, Data Protection, Conflict of Interest, Pandemic Risk Assessment, Privacy, and Reserves have been reviewed and approved by the Trustees. They are displayed on the charity’s website www.biblesforchildren.org.uk and hard copies can be obtained by emailing bibles4children2@aol.com .
