Bibles for Children (Founded 1997) ANNUAL REPORT & ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR 1 AUGUST 2022[to ] 31 JULY 2023
Registered CIO Charity No. 1187754 (England & Wales) and SC050350 (Scotland) and recognised as a Section 167 charity in Northern Ireland
26 YEARS OF BIBLE GIVING
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT for the year ending 31 July 2023
The 26th year of work of Bibles for Children was a challenging one which may have been due, in part, to the lingering effects of the covid pandemic in schools and the number of strikes by teachers throughout the year. Due to the charity’s distributor, Marston Book Services, moving its stocks to a new warehouse in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire as a result of a merger, there was some disruption and delays in the supply of Bibles to schools in the latter part of the year. Forty Six new schools received first time presentations of Bibles and were added to the charity’s data base. The number of schools receiving follow-on presentations was 375 and 16 schools received restart presentations. 26,459 Bibles were presented to children and their teachers. Since the charity was established in June 1997, over 710,600 Bibles have been given to children in nearly 2,500 schools.
To meet the on-going demand for Bibles from schools, further large printings of all the Bibles presented were carried out during the year, including 3,000 copies of Beibl y Plant, the Welsh language edition of The Children’s Bible. This was due to the demand from Welsh speaking schools as a result of the work of the charity’s Associate in Wales, Mrs Janet Hawking and her team of workers. The Trustees had to face significant increased costs both in printing and distribution. However, with bulk deliveries to some areas and small consignments of Bibles being despatched from Timsbury, savings were made and the Trustees were able to maintain the present sponsorships at their existing levels for a further year.
During the year Mrs Ena Hudson, wife of the Chairman and Secretary to the Charity, sadly had to resign for health reasons. The Trustees thanked her for all her hard work and diligent service over 26 years and she was presented with an appropriate gift. A new Minutes Secretary, Mrs Marion Miller, has been appointed.
Recent years have seen the setting up of Academy Trusts of Primary Schools, each Trust embracing a number of schools. In its 27th year the Trustees have decided to give emphasis to schools within these trusts, especially if some schools within the trusts are already using Bibles for Children for their Bible resources.
One of the charity’s helpers in Wales, Robyn Welsby, has originated two work books in the form of puzzle books on stories and events in the Old and New Testaments for use by children in Years 5 and 6 (and 7 in Scotland and Northern Ireland). In its 27th year the Trustees have decided to take these on board and print a quantity of each to offer to children in those year groups when they receive their Bibles. The books will help children to a greater understanding of the Bible in their studies. The Trustees have also engaged the parttime services of a Communication Specialist, Bob Northey, to revise and up-date all the charity’s presentation procedures including improvements to the website to enhance effective communication.
None of the foregoing would have been possible without financial support. I wish to express my personal thanks and that of the Trustees to all the charitable trusts, churches and private individuals whose help has been so vital in the expansion of the work to all parts of the United Kingdom. We prayerfully ask that this support will continue.
The accounts have been prepared on the accruals basis and independently examined according to the requirements of the Charity Commission and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator by Paxton Independent Examiners.

I am heartened to see children of all ages choosing independently to look at and read their Bibles during Silent Reading time or throughout the day.

I am delighted to report back that the school has benefited enormously from your very generous donation of Bibles. Pupils are thrilled to have their very own Bible in class and choose to read them regularly.

The children were absolutely delighted to receive their very own Bible complete with presentation label. The Bibles will be kept in school for the duration of the child's time with us and then taken home at the end to keep.
