Bibles for Children (Founded 1997) ANNUAL REPORT & ACCOUNTS FOR THE PERIOD 1 AUGUST 2021[to ] 31 JULY 2022

Registered CIO Charity No. 1187754 (England & Wales) and SC050350 (Scotland)

25 YEARS OF BIBLE GIVING

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT for the year ending 31 July 2022

The 25th year of work of Bibles for Children was again affected by the global coronavirus pandemic, very much due to the absence of pupils and teachers in schools. Nevertheless it is pleasing to be able to report that the Trustees were still able to help over 30,000 boys and girls to receive a personal Bible to use in school for their Religious Studies. Established in 1997, the charity has to date given 684,163 Bibles to children in the Primary Schools of the United Kingdom. 2,389 schools have been helped. Many of these have incorporated the Bibles presented into their school curriculum and use the charity’s “Follow-on” scheme to request Bibles on an annual basis.

During the year, the latest project aimed at helping children in the Primary Schools of the Anglican Dioceses to have their own Bible was begun. To date, schools in the Dioceses of Sheffield, Newcastle, Birmingham, Durham and Southwell & Nottingham have been contacted. In addition, the Diocese of Lichfield was helped with Bibles provided for schools attending a special “Inspire” event in Lichfield Cathedral. Positive responses received so far have been disappointing. This long term project will be continued in our 26th year. Sixty eight new schools were added to the charity’s data base during the year.

New printings of The Children’s Bible and Beibl y Plant have been put in hand at a cost of £75,999. The charity’s printing and carriage costs are expected to increase markedly in the coming months reflecting world-wide increases in the price of paper, production and distribution costs aggravated even further by container problems in overseas ports.

Two of our Trustees, John Haywood and Philip Veater, resigned from the Board during the year and I sincerely thanked them for their help and dedicated service over many years. A new member was appointed to the Board – Rev. Paul Stephens, a retired Anglican minister, whose experience and enthusiasm for the work will be invaluable.

I would like to pay tribute to the hard work of our Administrator and our executive Trustees and also the work of the charity’s Associates in Wales, Lincolnshire and Norfolk where new schools were helped during the year. I also commend the ministry of Andrew Masters to some thirty schools in the Hemel Hempstead area of Hertfordshire where Bibles are presented on an annual basis.

In celebrating 25 years of work in distributing Bibles to young children, which has now grown to reach almost every county in England, most counties in Wales and a number in Scotland, I wish to express my grateful thanks to all those without whom it would not have been possible. My thanks to all the supportive charitable trusts, private individuals and churches whose financial help has been critical in the charity’s expansion. The Trustees hope and pray that such support will continue in the future. There are over 18,000 Primary Schools in the United Kingdom so there is much work to be done.

The accounts have been prepared on the accruals basis and independently examined according to the requirements of the Charity Commission and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator by Paxton Independent Examiners.

17,167 pupils received a personal Bible in the 387 schools using the "Follow-on Scheme" this year

Typical Comments from Teacher’s Letters

We have received our Bibles and they are absolutely beautiful. Here at St Joseph's we can't express our thanks enough to you for providing this wonderful resource.

H H H H H H

I am heartened to see children of all ages choosing independently to look at and read their Bibles during Silent Reading time or throughout the day.

H H H H H H

I am delighted to report back that the school has benefited enormously from your very generous donation of Bibles. Pupils are thrilled to have their very own Bible in class and choose to read them regularly.

H H H H H H

The children were absolutely delighted to receive their very own Bible complete with presentation label. The Bibles will be kept in school for the duration of the child's time with us and then taken home at the end to keep.

GOVERNANCE

Going concern – With the current level of cash and stock resources, together with the ongoing and expected future contributions from its supporters, the Trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity can continue in its current mode of operation for the foreseeable future. They continue to believe that the "Going concern" basis of accounting is appropriate in preparing the annual financial statements.

Risk assessment – The Trustees have identified the major risks to which the charity is exposed and systems have been established to mitigate those risks, which will be reviewed annually or earlier if the need arises.

Policies – Safeguarding, Data Protection, Conflict of Interest, and Covid-19 – Risk Management Policies have been reviewed and approved by the Trustees and are displayed on the charity’s website www.biblesforchildren.org.uk . Hard copies can be obtained on request from the Chairman, 11 Southlands Drive, Timsbury, BA2 0HB.
