Bibles for Children (Founded 1997) ANNUAL REPORT & ACCOUNTS FOR THE PERIOD 1 AUGUST 2020[to ] 31 JULY 2021
Registered CIO Charity No. 1187754 (England & Wales) and SC050350 (Scotland)
24 YEARS OF BIBLE GIVING
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT for the year ending 31 July 2021
As with many charities and organisations, the incidence of the global coronavirus pandemic affected the work of Bibles for Children in its 24th year of work. However, it is pleasing to report that, despite the closure or partial closure of most schools, the Trustees were still able to help 471 schools throughout the United Kingdom at which 34,859 boys and girls received a personal Bible to use in school for their Religious Education studies. Since Bibles for Children was established in July 1997, a total of 645,600 Bibles have been presented to 2,319 schools in the United Kingdom.
Following the success of the ‘Year of the Word’ project to Catholic Primary Schools, in its 25th year the Trustees plan to commence a similar special project to Anglican Primary Schools which will involve the charity working with the Education Officers of each Anglican Diocese. During the year, the Trustees anticipate that up to 100 new schools will be added to the charity’s database and a further 35,000 children presented with a Bible.
The Statement of Financial Activities and the Balance Sheet for the year, which appear later in this report, show an improvement in the charity’s financial position compared with the previous year. However, to meet the Trustees’ targets in its 25th year, a further printing of Bibles will be needed at an estimated cost of £80,000. There have been considerable increases in the cost of printing and binding in the past twelve months and carriage and shipping costs have also seen large increases due to world-wide container problems, especially in the Far East.
We are sad to report the death of one of our Associates, Bert Patrick, during the year. Through his dedicated efforts over many years he extensively developed the work of the charity in the Leicestershire area. He will be greatly missed.
The work of Bibles for Children in bringing God’s Word to young hearts and minds could not continue to grow and develop without all the support it receives from other organisations, churches and private individuals. On behalf of the Trustees I wish to thank all those who have supported the charity over the years and continue to do so.
The accounts have been prepared on the accruals basis and independently examined according to the requirements of the Charity Commission and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator by Paxton Independent Examiners.

16,400 pupils received a personal Bible in the 370 schools using the "Follow-on Scheme" this year
Typical Comments from Teacher’s Letters
In some classes the Bibles have been used in the Literacy Hour, and in RE lessons, and I am sure that the children will continue to gain a great deal from their Bibles in the months and years ahead.

A huge thank you for the Bibles that you supplied for the children in our school. It has been a great joy to hear them chatting about how much they have read and seeing them carry their Bibles around with them at break and dinner time.
H H H H H H
Thank you so much for the wonderful Bibles your charity donated to our children. We have used the Bibles in R.E. and in Collective Worship. Having the name plates make them very special and our staff, governors and clergy are all so pleased with the contribution they have made to school life.
H H H H H H
Pupils and staff were delighted with the Bibles. In the days following the presentation, I found children reading their Bible in all classrooms. It was decided that we would let the children take them home to show parents but bring them back for use in school. This worked well and the Bibles are all in regular use in school.
H H H H H H
All our pupils are thrilled to have their very own Bible in class and actually choose to read them in their special Reading Time. All members of staff found them an excellent resource in their classrooms to aid the teaching of Religious and Moral Education.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Bibles for Children
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the CIO for the year ended 31st July 2021.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). You are satisfied that your charity is not required by charity law to be audited and have chosen instead to have an independent examination.
I report in respect of my examination of the CIO's accounts carried out under section 44(1)(c) of the 2005 Act and section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed the requirements of Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent examiner's statement
Since the CIO has prepared its accounts on an accruals basis and is also registered in Scotland your examiner must be a member of a body listed in Regulation 11(2) of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). I can confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a registered member of the Association of Accounting Technicians which is one of the listed bodies.
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
-
accounting records were not kept in respect of the CIO as required by section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and section 130 of the 2011 Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those records; or
-
the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements Regulation 8 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
