The Charity’s Trustees, who are also Directors for the purposes of the Companies Act, have pleasure in presenting their fourth Annual Report and Financial Statements, for the financial year ended 30th September 2022.
## LEGAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS
## **Governing Instrument**
The Company is constituted as a charitable company limited by guarantee, not having a share capital and is governed by Memorandum and Articles of Association. After the financial period covered by this report, the Company’s Objects were revised, as below.
## **Membership**
Membership is open to interested individuals interested in promoting the Objects of the Charity and accepted into membership by the Trustees.
## **Trustees/Directors**
The Company’s day-to-day work is delegated by the members, to a Board of Directors – who are also the charity’s Trustees, who are elected by, and report to, an Annual General Meeting [AGM], that receives an Annual Report and the Financial Statements [Accounts] of the organisation.
One third of the Directors/Trustees stand down at each AGM, in rotation, by length of service, but are eligible for re-election. The Trustees meet as required to manage the business of the Company.
Between AGMs the Trustees are responsible for overseeing the running of the Company - governed by both Company and Charity law/regulations - and for obtaining funding, running projects and allocating resources. Collectively, they are responsible for the overall management of the operations of the Company/Charity.
Having reached the income and expenditure level required in the previous financial year, for charitable registration, the company successfully applied for charitable status.
## **Objects of the Company**
The objects of the Charity are, to advance the education of the public in the subject of in particular but not exclusively English, Maths, Science, CV writing and reading and writing skills.
## **Board of Directors / Trustees**
Last year we said goodbye to Lovena Francis as a Director/Trustee, for whose service we thank her, and welcomed during the year two new Directors, Nuha Abdalla and Esra Mohammed.

## REVIEW OF THE YEAR
**Development.** ACE’s beneficiaries continued to be impacted by financial challenges, from issues such as the cost of living and fuel costs, on the heels of the pandemic and the effects of the Ukraine conflict continued to increase the numbers of beneficiaries experiencing household poverty. We had an increase of women from refugee and asylum seeker communities using our services and worked with over 250 women, children and young people around issues concerning their health, emotional wellbeing, financial circumstances and language barriers
We delivered training and development programmes to reduce social exclusion, isolation and to increase resilience. Supporting women back into the workforce with training in business & enterprise, empowerment & self development, ESOL, maths, learning programmes. For children and young people we have our school holiday provision for primary aged children for families eligible for income related benefits. Additionally, we were able to provide individual support to women with critical housing need , domestic violence and young people experiencing mental health, with schools exclusion, SEN statements, offering advice, information and advocacy support or referrals to other service providers.
## **Projects supported during the Year**
- Creative Play and Healthy Eating children's activity club
- Homework booster study club
- Maths for budgeting skills
- Be Your Boss - business entrepreneurship skills for migrant women
- Digital/IT and Level 2 vocational courses
- Young people's mental health, education and school exclusion.
This work was supported by Liverpool City Region, Liverpool City Council, Community Foundation Merseyside, LCVS and MPAC. Environment and climate change continues to be an important part of our work to enable women and their families to access sustainable food security.
**Consultation, beneficiaries and feed-back.** ACE regularly conducts consultations and meetings with stakeholders to evaluate the impact of our work and identify gaps in service provision This includes gathering individual and group feedback on ‘ _what went well and even better if’_ from beneficiaries.
Feedback gathered from LCR Cares Wealth Building and ‘Be Your Boss’ employability courses, women want to build on skills and continue progression onto other courses and activities such as setting up a community Cafe or community food business to help women gain valuable work experience at makers market stalls, local event food, and catering management; and to provide leadership shadowing and volunteering opportunities for minoritised women to develop workplace skills and competencies. Feedback from children and parents attending ACE holiday activities feed into the workshops, sports, healthy food preparation and family learning.

## AUDIT EXEMPTION STATEMENT
For the year ending 30th September 2022, the company was entitled to exemption from audit under section 477 of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small companies. The members have not required the company to obtain an audit of its accounts for the year in question in accordance with section 476.
The directors acknowledge their responsibilities for complying with the requirements of the Act with respect to accounting records and the preparation of accounts. These accounts have been prepared in accordance with the provisions applicable to companies subject to the small companies’ regime.
## RESULTS FOR THE YEAR
The results for the year are set out on the finance pages following this report.
## RESERVES
The balances at 30th September 2022 amounted to £16,381 taking into account the value of fixed assets in use [which were for practical purposes zero] by the company.
## FINANCIAL REVIEW
During the year greatly increased funding was received from a range of sources, as the Projects report, and shown below in the Grants received section. Income for the year, £80,981 increased slightly [2021 £80,206] and Expenditure incurred was less, at £67,588 [2021 £78,552].
## THE FUTURE. **Post balance sheet and future developments**
The DfE HAF programme supported by MPAC & LCVS allows ACE to provide healthy food, sport and enrichment activities during half-terms/summer holidays for children and families in receipt of free school meals and/or eligible income-related benefits. We relocated from community centre to secondary school to enable access to appropriate safe spaces for children to learn and play. We will also increase our staffing capacity to ensure we meet individual learning support needs, as the numbers of SEND children using our services has increased during the year, and staff and volunteers will access Level 2 or Level 3 training on topics i.e. Autism Awareness, Counselling .
ACE’s future work will deliver a community growing food project to promote healthy eating, food security and protecting the environment; the community food growing projects in partnership with other organisations, primary schools & community groups. Empowering women to be their Boss with training and development support has been achieved with the support from Community Foundation Merseyside, LCVS, Liverpool City Council & Liverpool City Region; this work will continue to deliver digital, social media, budgeting and everyday use of functional Maths and English support, to help women grow ideas into artisan businesses trading at Makers Markets, and community events to also increase wealth building capacity in local areas of high unemployment.

## **Independent Examiner** ’ **s Report on the Accounts**
Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Acronym Community Empowerment (ACE)
I report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 30th September 2022, which are set out on pages 1 to 7.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act)) and that an independent examination is needed.
## It is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts (under section 43 of the Act, as amended);
- follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners (under section 43(7)(b) of the Act, as amended); and
- state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner’s statement**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
- (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the trustees have not met the requirements, to ensure that:
- proper accounting records are kept [in accordance with section 41 of the Act]; and
- accounts are prepared which agree with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act; or
- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached [but see amended Note 4].
