Aims and Objertives
The Future Academy Tnjstees rewew the airrs. objectives and activities of the charity each
year in January. This report IcM)ks at what the charity has achieved: the outcomes of its V￿rk
in the reporting period and the benefit brought to the young peopte it supwrts.
The Trustees have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general
guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charitys aims and objectives and in planning
its future activities. In particular the Tnjstees consider how the planned activities will

Burj Barajneh Camp was established in 1948 by The League of Red Cross s￿ietieS to
accommodate refi￿eeS VA￿ fled from Galilee in mrthem Palestine. The camp is in the
southern suburbs of BeiruL Buri Barajneh is overpopulated arKI living conditions are pxxjr.
Acconding to UNRWA Iunited Nations Relief and Works Ageryl MO￿ than 30,(K)O
Palestinian and Syrian refugees live inthe camp. though originally only 10.(KM) were planned
to live in the one square kilorrEtre site. Men from the camp generallywork as casual
labourers in construction and women V￿rk in sewing factories or as cleaners.
Refugees remain subject to various restrittions and a￿ denied access to their full rdnge of
human rights, even though most of them were bom and rdised in Lebanon {UNWRAI. Acc
to primary sCh￿IS is generallyonly with the supwrt of humanitarian communities and one
in three refugee children fail to complete their primary education.
Future Academy aiffs to deliver activities that will further its objects. These i nclude football
coaching: football tOumarr￿nts. English language classes; and srK)rting/educational field
trips in wider Beinrt. All activities 3 re risk assessed at the planning stage ar)d again before
implementation; they are reviewed afterwards to evaluate their success and impact.

Futu￿ Academrfs operations are overseen by co-founders Christopher Watts (Chairof
Trustees) and Ahmad A Jamal (Operatiors Lead, Beinjt). Ahmad is resp)nsible for the day-
trFday running of Future Football and liaisonwith the Buii Bardjneh community while Chris
manages Future English and develops partnerships with FQtential spM)nsors. Both volunteer
their time and expertise and a￿ integral to the successful operation of Futu￿ Academy.
Future Academrfs aims for 2020 were to become known a nd trusted by the Buri Barajneh
community- to estsblish regular activities for one cohort of children: and to raise sufficient
funds to maintain these activities forthe calendaryear and beyond.
Achievements and Performance
Prior to Charity registration in Februa ry 2020 Future Academy held ctcasional football
coaching sessions; hosted the first Future Cup and prowded a series of taster English classes
trtr small groups of children.
Shortly after registration the corork8VinLS pandemic curtailed intemational travel; Ix)th
Lebanon and the UK entered prolonged I￿ kdowns. While frustrating. the Trustees used this
time to prioritise raising awareness and fundraisi￿ activities.

media presence on Faceknk (Future Academy): Instagrdm Ifutureacademybeirutl; and
Linkedln (Future academy UK).
Fundraising events included "From Lockdown to Lebanon- where the Trustees walked. ran
or cycled the 3488km between London and Lebamn and a humanitarian aprE31 following
the Beinrt port explosion in August. twhile the stnKture of the camp vtss not affected by
the explosion. the availability of V￿rk and focMI decreased causing further hardship for the
community.]
By the summer, travel restrictior￿ had eased sufficientlyto allow activities to resume in Burj
Barajneh. Future Academy currently provides regular activities forup to SO children aged
7-14 years. Every week children may attend two fcL)tball coaching sessions and two English
lessons. Sessions have a maximum grcwp sizeof 16 to facilitate p￿B￿sS arm4 are free of
charge to the children.
Future Football
50 children regularly attend Future F(￿ball sessions. which are led by a qualified IcKal
coach (Asian Football Federation Accreditation) and supported by at least one assistant
coach. We hire the community Astroturf pitrh. within the camp. for four knur5 each y￿ek.
Sessions focus on the acquisition of football skills, tactics, fair play and fun; groups are split
according to age and ability- Monthly awards are given for attendance, improvemenL fair
play and leadership. The Future Cup provides the children with an OPFK)rtunity to test
the￿elVeS competitively against other team5.

Future Academy is prcAJd to host the only annual f(M)tball trAJmament for reftEee children
in Beirut. In November eight teams, totalling 9) children from 4 different refugee camps.
participated in a fiercely competitive, Covid-safe toum3n￿nt held over two days. TransFK)rt.
staffing arKI ref￿shrnents were provided: all competitor5 received fcotball kit and
participation medals; and trophies ￿re avRrded to ￿ winners. trEst player. best
goalkeeper and top scorer. After los1r￿ in the final in 2019, the Future Fwtball 'A' tea m
squad were dÈlightÈd arKI extremely proud to be crowned champions of 2020. Futu
Academy is very grateful to Nai Arabia who prcmded s￿nSorship for this event.
Future English
In October Future English moved into its new Ed￿atIOn Centre. IPrior to this, English classes
were held outdcor5]. While fairly basic. local staff and volunteers worked hard to trarsform
it into a safeand welcomire leamirE envimment chairs and tsbles to accommcKlate
all students. During 2021 we hope to provide additional equipment and ￿SOurceS to inspire
our students further. Future English provides classes led byTEFL-qualified, native English
speaking teachers supported by local (English speaking) Arabicteaching assistsnts. Weoffer
an innovative. besF)oke curriculum that is designed to meet the thildren's needs and to
supplerrent their limited. fom)al schooling. All students complete a baseline assessment of
English skills duri ng their first month and are then allocated to the most appropriate class.
Lessons focus on the acquisition of English skills (both oral and written), complemented with
other curriculum areas and lifeskills. Student pr¢¥ress is measured both wthin a lesson{by
engagemenL outcome. intervention and self-evaluationl and over tirt￿ {using the Future
English Proficiency scale). 50 children have attended English lessons this year but
attendance fI￿tuate$. Consistent attendance is essential for maximi51￿ progress and
creating stsbility for child￿n whose start in life has been challenging. We are addressing this
issue using f￿tbal1-style I￿entIves,. monthly awards are given for attendance. effort.
improvement, achievement aNI leadership.
Community Relationships
Charities and NGOS operating in Buri Barajneh are often wewed V4ith scepticism. Residents
are wary of cha rities a￿1VIng and promising great new opp)rtunities. then disappearing
when too many obstscles occur or diverting res￿rceS when a crisis happens elsewhere.

Future F￿tbal l Director, bvas a child refugee who grew up in the carry (becoming
professional f￿tballerj. he is well known and respected. Our football coaches, teaching
assistsnts andsecuritystaff are all local residents. The commnity is becoming familiarwith
our programme of activities and children are keen to participate.

Volunteer Contrlbutl
Without the significant contriixjtion of volunteers. Future Academy wcmjld be unable to
del iver its activities to so many children.
In addition to the time thnatÈd by The Board of Trustees (￿CaSIOnal volunteer5, the
contributions provided by our key management personnel. consultsnts and volunteer
teachers equate to nKJre than 45 hour5 per week. A Cor￿er¥ative estimate of the financial
value of their contrilyjtion to Future Acaderry is £351X) per rrnnth.
Future Plans
Coronavirus continues to impact uwn Futu￿ AcadeNrfs operations= travel restrictions.
entry requirements, local and intemational lockdowns, quarantine. additional costs and
reduced fundraising opp)rtunities. We exW 2021 to be similarty challenging.
Ouraints for 2021 are to:

Public Benefit
The Tnjstees confimi that t￿Y have complied with their duty to have due rega rd to the
guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercisingtheir powers
and duties. The public benef it of the Chariws activities is to advance in life and relieve the
needs of young people living in Burj Barajneh Camp, Beirut- this is achieved principally by
providing the children with regular educational and sporting activities.
Structure. Governance and Management
Future Academy was registered as a CIO with the Charities Comission in February 2020.
The governing document is the Charity Commission's Foundation Model Constitution.
Future Academy has a board of eightTrustees, who have a varied skillset.
ThrÈo Trustees are key officials are responsible for the day-to-day running of the
charity (alongside co-f(yJnder Ahmad Al Jamal). Key 0￿1Cl31S are appKJinted to the b)ard for
an initial period of four years; other TTr￿tee5 a￿ apKK)inted for three year5. (Existing
Trustees may be reappointed for adcfitional tern￿1.

The Trustees wll cornsider recruitment of new T￿￿teeS as the need arises. Applications from
suitable candidates would be sought try identifying specific gaps in professional skills and
seeking recommendatiors of professionally qualified candidates. if necessary. placing
athertisements in suitable publications. Applicants *wld be provided with an infornation
pack outli ning the history of the organisation, its strLKture, activities obJ"ectives, roles
and expectations of Trustees plus other ￿levant supwting infom)ation.
The th)ard meets a min1r￿M of four times a year. Policies are reviewed by the T￿￿tee5 on
an annual basis along with the risk rÈgister. The EK)ard are tommitted to developi ng a
training budget sothat Future Acaderrry Tnjstees and the widerteam are appropriately
trained for their roles.

Financial Review
Future Academy raises funds from the general rAJblic. irylividual donors. workplace giving
schemes arKI corporate sponsors. All funds are unrestrirted- we (ks not use professional
fundraisers.
Once revenue ￿a¢he$ £25.CW Future Academy will be required to have their accounts
independendy examined. Until that time the accounts will be revievjed by twstees not
involved in the day-ts>day njnning of tr* activities.
In 2020 totsl receipts of unrestrirted furKls were £16.899: experKliture totslled £7.355
leawng a net balance of £9.544.
Future Acaderrfs nNiin expenses a￿ the hi￿ costs of both the Astroturf pitch and
Education Centre plus the costs a551Xlated with the logistics of operating a charity overseas.
We estimate that the cost of activities planned for 2021 an￿Unt to £21.￿1 and so far vle
have pledges for donatiors of £I5.1X￿.
Remuneration of Key Management Personnel
Future Academy does not pay any Key Management Personnel.

Trustee expenses
In 2020 Future Academy paid eX￿nseS of £2.755 to tt¥o trustees. The expenses covered
living and travel expenses ass(￿lated with govemance {£2761 and volunteering {as teachers)
in Beirut {£24791. They were approved, in principle. in advance and paid retrospectively on
receipt of appropriate d￿un*ntst10n [in accordance with Future Academy Internal
Financial Controls Policy. 6.3: Expenses]
Reserves Pollcy
The trustees aim to maintsin reserves allowing Future Academy activities to run for six
months. This provides sta￿lIty3nd enables us to honwr our commitment to the children of
Burl Barajneh. Our current reserves equate to 5% n￿nths. which suggests that we are
maintaini ng an appropriate level of liquidity vthilst ersuring that excessive funds a￿ not
accurrwjlated. The adequacy of this ￿lcY is re￿evttl annually.

date of the statement of assets & liabilities.

Risk
The major risks to which the Charity is exposed have been identified by the Tnjstees:

have been recorded in the risk register.
This year we have seen a new risk- that posed by Coronavirus. C￿atire 3 rdrge of issues
with associated additional costs. These have been added to tF￿ risk register alongside the
procedure5 established to mitigate these.
Financial risk relates mainly to establishing stable ￿VerTrue Streaft￿ and overseas currency
fluctuations - our ￿venue is in £ steding Exrt payments made in Beirut are in Lebanese
pounds (converted from US dollars). Both the wlitical and economic situation in Lebanon is
very volatile and the value of Lebanese pourKls againstthe dollar fluctuates daily. In order to
mitigate these risks, the trustees follow all Charity CoM￿NSsion guidarKe relating to
"Moving, handling and ￿CeIVing funds safely when working intematlonall￿.
