## **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)**

## **Priorities for support**

The amount of children, schools or number of projects that can be supported by the trustees is necessarily limited to the amount of funds that are available for distribution each year. The trustees have determined that the current priorities for funding are:

You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about:

- policy on grantmaking;

- contribution made by volunteers.

- The provision of education to disadvantaged girls within local communities and across the world, but particularly in AfroCaribbean people;

The priorities for support will be reviewed by the trustees every year and may be changed depending upon circumstances and the perceived effectiveness of the application of funds. Any change to these priorities must still fulfil the charitable purpose and objectives of the charity.

## **Principles applied in determining support**

In awarding grants, the trustees will apply the following principles;

The trustees will consider any requests or known situations that are eligible for consideration:

• From any geographical area within the UK and overseas;

**TAR**

March **2012**

3

• From organisations or young people up to the age of 25 Each request or situation will be considered on its own merits. Where situations have been previously considered (whether successful or not) any due diligence undertaken to reach an earlier decision will be made available to the trustees

The trustees will carry out sufficient due diligence to ensure that the request or situation meets both the charitable purposes, and the priorities for support set out in this policy.

The trustees are content to work in partnership with other grant making bodies where funding of an entire project is beyond the scope of any single organisation. This includes, but is not limited to, national and international funding for the advancement of education and the relief of poverty through education.

## Section D Achievements and performance

March **2012**

|Section D|Achievements andperformance|
|---|---|
|**Summary of the main**
**achievements of the charity**
**during the year**|We have raised £3000 in order to be able to send 5 girls to
secondary school. The amount doesn’t cover tuition fees alone it
also covers uniform, equipment, study materials, after school
tuition and other extra-curricular activity. At the moment our first
cohort of girls were selected via an entry test which was conducted
in Mpape, Abuja Nigeria.
So far, with the money raised we have enrolled four girls in school
who started attending from October 2019 until schools were
directed to close due to the covid-19 pandemic. During that time,
we worked closely with the school as well as with our project
manager to monitor the girls’ progress and well-being as well as
regular updates on how they were settling in school having missed
some terms previously. The girls adjusted into school very
positively and by Christmas time, we were able to put together a
care package that was sent to their 4 families. This package
contained essential items that the girls would be able to use to look
after themselves while attending school.
On the 29th of January 2020 as part of our pledge to expose the
girls to enrichment activities, they were invited to Ventures
Park Abuja to be hosted by female role models in the industry so
that they could experience a day within a co-working space. The
girls were given talks by female professionals and they were highly
inspired by everything they learnt. In addition, they were given a
tour of the co-working space and were shown all the inspirational
creative work that start-up founders, freelancers, entrepreneurs
and professionals had created within the space. A lot of key skills
were taught to the girls including leadership, collaboration,
resilience and self-efficacy. As a result of this visit, they were then
offered a scholarship to a computer programming camp which was
due to take place in the summer of this year but has been
postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Additionally, we raised £200 from donors and trustees which was
used to purchase essential food items to aid the enrolled girls and
their families during the COVID 19 pandemic. This fund is separate
from the school fund and was administered by the project
management team in Abuja, Nigeria.
Our aim is to enrol a fifth girl in school by the 2020/21 academic
year and kickstart another campaign to enrol 10 girls who have 3
years of the Secondary cycle left to complete.
The computer hub was set up in May, 2021 at the school of our
beneficiaries. We purchased five laptops for and have provided
basic computer training and coding sessions for both students and
teachers.
We have also secured a partnership with TechHer NG in Abuja to
provide them access to our training material likewise TechHer will
also provide technical support to the Computing Hub where
requested and necessary.|

## **Section E Financial review**

The reserves that we have set aside provide financial stability and **Brief statement of the** the means for the development of our principal activity. We intend **charity’s policy on reserves** to maintain our reserves at a level which is at least equivalent to the remainder years for each enrolled girl in school in a way that does not hinder completion of their secondary education. Therefore, if there are 4 enrolled girls in school, then reserves will be 4 X tuition fees per year X remainder academic years in school. We do not add the upcoming cost for the academic year in reserves and also pad projected upcoming costs with a contingency amount that rolls back into contingency should it not be spent. We intend to use the reserves in the following manner in 3- 5 years (based on the remainder duration of the girls education): a. Tuition fees and associated school costs b. Enrichment programs c. Emergency situations completely outside of any forecasted scenario e.g. COVID-19 pandemic

The Board regularly on an annual basis reviews the amount of reserves that are required to ensure that they are adequate to fulfil our continuing obligations.

## **About Us**

Educating Africa is an educationfocused charity that aims to support and empower children of AfroCaribbean descent to fulfil their potential Our strategy is to level the playing field wherever possible using education as an instrument to promote selfefficacy

We aim to achieve this by providing financial physical and emotional support to enable girls to obtain the vital education that they deserve We passionately believe in gender equality in education therefore we work in partnership with relevant shareholders to attain our vision of a richer and sustainable Africa

The organisation is fully functional in Abuja Nigeria where our projects are implemented by its Project Management Team

Reflecting on the financial year what will stand out for most people will be the COVID pandemic and its disastrous effects on education Furthermore damaging were the immense setbacks inflicted on our already disadvantaged students Without access to technology our students were disconnected from their place of learning from their education and most importantly from each other

Survival understandably became the core focus and with many families struggling to make ends meet it was a tough decision to stay engaged academically

The importance of our work was even more signified as we had to deviate from our academic focus to providing relief and revision material for our students families

In regards to our work was a challenging year in terms of working with our school partner to continue to deliver good quality education amidst the lockdown restrictions implemented by the Nigerian government where our current cohort is located

## **03**

We had certain goals and initiatives to implement such as increasing the number of girls enrolled in school mentoring for GCSE level students as well as programming and community workshops We have decided that in the best interest of our bursary recipients school partner and other beneficiaries we will extend the deadline for the introduction of these initiatives

Despite these setbacks however kindness still prevailed and our donors stepped up confidently to support our students families Our partner school also consistently provided support where possible and kept us informed of government guidelines throughout the duration of the lockdown We were still able to carry out frequent student checkins and liaise with the family to ensure that the girls engaged with home learning

To be contd

Our founders passion to improve the lives of African girls through access to a good education This is the core of what we do at EAG the passion to love and serve our community
