ANNUAL REPORT FOR SUBMISSION TO THE CHARITIES COMMISSION
Period: 23 January 2020 to 1 January 2021
Summary of main activities undertaken:
With Covid rumblings starting in late January 2020, the plan for an in-person camp for March 2020 was shelved, and the policy updated, so that all resources were to be directed to helping the girls and their families cope with the devastation they were facing.
Main achievements:
Having held a literacy camp the previous year, the girls were comfortable using digital phones and tablets. This felt a real achievement during the pandemic as we could hold online sessions. The girls were taught about the virus and how to protect themselves and the community. Basic science was explained as to how virulent this virus was and later this developed into discussing and preempting vaccine hesitancy. Mental health issues were brought up and discussed.
Further funds raised, were then sent to the families in Rajasthan as help during covid. This bought them much needed food and medicines.
A few volunteers, both in the UK and from Bangalore and New Delhi, helped with trying to continue with the educational and pastoral aspect. It was heartening that girls who had taken the Class 10 exam passed.
Public benefit:
Help was given to benefit the village, in the form of a small amount of funds sent, to enable women farmers to buy seeds for planting crops. Apart from covid, the previous harvest had been very poor.
Our collaboration with Urmul has ceased, and sadly their founder among others passed away from covid.
Future plans:
Continuing to provide digital education to children over a wider area, as it has proved that this form of learning has given self-confidence and fostered the desire to contribute to their wider community.
Smart phones are tradionally, the preserve of men and brothers, so teaching girls and women how to use these, has improved their self esteem as well as supported them to take on leadership roles. Instead of being dependent, on when their brothers, fathers or husbands are free, they are able to navigate Google and look for the information they need, when they need.
The charity would also like to test the need for our services to other regions in India and to a larger age range.
Due to the pandemic, the converting of the bank account to a charitable account was put on hold. The plan is to set this up during the year.
All the trustees have agreed to carry on for the next year.
Finally, this report confirms that the trustees received no remuneration, expenses or other benefits from the charity.
