Newly appointed Trustees are interviewed and appointed via due process, and the Board give regard to skills, knowledge and experience. Appointed Trustees are required to complete an Eligibility Declaration form, and are provided with a copy of the charity’s Constitution, as well as a copy of the most recent Annual Report and Accounts.
The New Normal is managed by an Executive Board made up of the three First Trustees, namely, James Sapwell, Jack Baxter and Benjamin May. This Executive Board are overseen by the full Board of Trustees.
Consideration and management of major risk is buoyed by the terms in the Constitution, including due process, a quorum for decisions, effective policies and procedures, conflicts of interest, and collective responsibility. Trustee Indemnity Insurance is available on request, provided by the charity.
Section C Objectives and activities
Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document
The objects of the CIO are to relieve the needs of young people adversely affected by bereavement, loss and other circumstances arising from grief that may impact their mental health in particular, but not exclusively, by the provision of advice, information and group support sessions.

The activities of the charity to accomplish these objects include, but are not exclusive to, the provision of peer support meetings, information, guidance and community.
Peer support is at the core of what we do; we believe that talking with others who have had similar experiences, and who can understand the nuances of our trauma and loss, is incredibly important. The provision of this is in direct response to the needs of the communities who use our services.
Our provision of free and accessible peer support meetings continued to grow in 2021, both as a result of our increased visibility and reputation as a charity, and the continued impact of Covid-19 driving need. Although it was difficult to sustain in person support during the periods of Covid lockdown, the frequency of online meetings we provided, and the number of persons attending, grew, along with the introduction of new meeting spaces.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)
By the end of 2021, as well as our multiple Good Grief spaces, we also provided dedicated spaces for black and brown grief, queer grief, complicated grief, lockdown loss, young carers and separate mental health spaces for those identifying as male and those identifying as female. A number of new spaces were also being developed for role out in 2022, including for student grief and partner loss, in response to direct requests from our communities.
Due to the nature of our online support, we have welcomed grievers in our meetings from at least 15 countries globally, from our base in the UK, as well as attendees from diverse communities within the UK. TNN is committed to ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion amongst all persons involved in the charity, including trustees, volunteers and attendees. We have robust policies and procedures in place to promote transparent and non-discriminatory operations. The Charity’s aim is to be truly representative of our society and of our beneficiaries, and for each member to feel respected.
Accessibility is very important to us as we want to ensure the people who need our services are able to utilise them, and so we have a range of provisions in place. The diversity of our meetings represent that of our service users and volunteers, with our support developed from a direct need from the communities we work with.
During 2021, we were able to really sure up the foundations of our support to ensure it was both appropriate to need and sustainable for the organisation. We developed specific roles to support this, including safeguarding, host support and social media. These roles assist in the day to day operations of the charity, allowing sustainable growth, but also as another level of accountability and representation to ensure public benefit.
Our Board have a regard to the guidance on public benefit, as issued by the Charity Commission, when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance would be relevant. This includes consideration as part of their review of outcomes of the work delivered, as well as how any proposed decisions will contribute to the charity’s aims and objectives in delivering public benefit.

The charity has undergone substantial growth within 2021, with an increase in service users, service delivery, visibility, volunteers and fundraising.
Despite the limited income of the charity at the opening of 2021, the charity has nonetheless delivered on our aims and objectives, as well as creating growth and development in all areas. This is primarily due to the dedication, hard work and ingenuity of the volunteers who give their time freely. Serving as trustees, operational volunteers and meeting facilitators, our 30 volunteers make a tangible difference across the charity.
Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Service Provision:
By the end of 2021, we had provided approximately 204 meetings, with 1,530 participant attendances, and over 15,000 minutes of support. This averages to 17 meetings per month, with 7.5 participants per meeting. These were delivered across 9 meeting types, many of which are dedicated to specific grief and communities, with 3 additional meetings developed for the coming year. Participants were joining meetings from at least 15 individual countries, including Hong Kong, Chile, Canada, Spain and Holland.
Volunteers:
In 2021, the charity was solely operated, and services provided, by volunteers. The number of volunteers increased to 30 by the end of the year, including host facilitators, social media, safeguarding and host support. Volunteers The retention of volunteers is high, and is a reflection of the supportive environment provided. This includes one to one support meetings, provision of welcome pack, guidance on looking after mental health, and the promotion of respect, equality, diversity and communication throughout all levels of the charity.
Fundraising:
The charity was able to increase our income from just £3,103 in the previous year, to £43,370 in 2021, a 14-fold increase. This was achieved without professional fundraisers, through a small number of charity organised events, a number of beneficiary-organised fundraisers and a few small grants. The charity’s spend on fundraising costs for 2021, was 14.1% of the total raised. Operations: The creation of dedicated roles, and a more formal structure, aided the continuing professionalising of the charity during 2021. Roles introduced included host support, social media and safeguarding, vital for safe operations and sustainable development. Reviews and development of our policies and procedures, volunteer management, record-keeping and monthly reporting, supported more efficient and effective practices. Values & Ethos: The values of the charity are at the core of everything we do, and every decision made. The active promotion of collaborative working, open communication, creative-thinking, diversity, and prioritising of mental health, has resulted in the charity benefiting greatly from the loyalty, dedication and hard-work of our volunteers.

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
The charity had no official Reserves Policy in place in 2021, which was not a requirement, but the charity maintained a conscious £2,000 reserve which was appropriate to our needs and all financial decisions were based on immediately available funds. A formal policy has since been put in place for improved financial management and governance.

In 2021, the charity’s income from fundraising, donations and grants amounted to £43,370. This can be broken down into: fundraising of £28,413, donations of £9,982, and a grant of £4,975. The charity are pleased with this 14-fold increase from the previous year, and without the use of professional fundraisers.

Our income facilitated this, whilst allowing us to retain a generous buffer to enter the new financial year for both expected, and unexpected, costs.
