Structure, governance and management Governing document
U.K. Nagara Shiva Temple was constituted as a CIO Foundation Model with the Charity Commission in January 2020 under charity number 1187503. It is governed by the CIO Foundation Constitution.
Organisational structure
The trustees are the members of the organisation and they are responsible for the general control and management of the charity. The trustees give their time freely and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits.
The trustees meet together as a body every quarter and are responsible for all decisions taken in relation to running the temple prayer activities by the charity. To assist in the smooth running of the charity the trustees have seeked help from interested volunteers and appointed two of them permanently to help with finance/accounting and also around thirty volunteers for managing monthly prayer meetings. The volunteers give their time freely and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits.
Appointment of trustees and Management
The charity is operated under the rules of its constitution adopted on 22 January 2020.
Core objectives and activities
Our objectives are set to reflect our faith and community aims. Each year our trustees review our objectives and activities to ensure they continue to reflect our aims.
-
To advance the faith of Saivism for the benefit of the Hindu seekers in the U.K.
-
To establish a place of worship by building an iconic Shiva temple in the U.K. as laid out in the Hindu Agama Scriptures.
-
Conduct frequent prayer meetings mostly as per the Hindu calendar festival days and serve free food to the visitors/devotees.
-
Teaching the young generation about Hindu culture and Tamil language.
Our strategy is to make our prayer meetings accessible and welcoming to all Hindus and those who wish to know more about our faith. They can learn about our religion and mode of worship.
3
An important part of our strategy is community welfare and education. Our immediate goal is to find and build a place of worship in order to achieve all our goals and objectives.
Use of Volunteers
The Value of Volunteer Support The Trustees extend their sincere gratitude to our volunteers, whose contributions are vital to both our temple operations and community outreach. Our volunteers are deeply integrated into every facet of the charity, from facilitating prayer meetings and spearheading the land search to managing our digital presence and social media platforms. We actively foster an environment where trustees and volunteers collaborate and share specialized skills. It is a testament to our community’s strength that our network of dedicated devotees and volunteers continues to grow year over year.
Worship and Prayer:
Our organisation provides a centre for the worship of Lord Shiva and other associated deities of Saivism. During the year under review, we offered a range of religious services: regular prayer meetings and education to adults and children.
● Prayer Meetings:
We have conducted 6 important festivals during this period. Monthly prayers to the Saiva deities Lord Nataraja, Goddess Sivagami, Ganesha and Murgan in a rented hall (same location) on festival days and offered the best service to the community with free food to all throughout the year. The prayer meeting invite is widely published on social media platforms, our temple website (https://www.shivatempleuk.org/events) and public groups. We have people from various sects and beliefs joining the prayers and the community finds both physical and spiritual fulfillment.
● Religious Education:
Our prayer meetings serve as a vibrant platform for spiritual education, where we explore the profound significance of Hindu scriptures and traditions. We actively engage devotees of all ages, encouraging both adults and children to master classical devotional hymns.
To deepen this understanding, we integrate Saiva Philosophy into our regular gatherings and offer structured, short-term courses for focused study. For example, we concluded a successful 10-week intensive online course on the meanings and recital of Thevaram and Thiruvasagam , held every Saturday from October to December 2024.
4
Land Search:
We are rigorously pursuing the acquisition of a dedicated site, evaluating both vacant land and purpose-built properties. To ensure the long-term success of our charity projects, we are actively collaborating with the local council and councillors for strategic support. It is heartening to witness the unwavering dedication of our volunteers and devotees driving this vision forward. With property searches and fundraising efforts in full swing, we remain confident in achieving our milestones.
● Organisation Website:
Our volunteers dedicated significant time and effort to develop a brand-new website for our organization, along with a special site focused on fundraising activities. These platforms serve as vital resources, providing regular updates on prayer meetings, our charity missions, and a wealth of articles and learning materials about Hinduism and Saivism.
Financial Review
Principal funding sources
Financial Review The charity’s primary revenue is derived from monthly prayer meeting collections, one-off contributions, and a dedicated base of monthly donors. We are pleased to report that total donations for this financial year reached £68,603 , marking a notable increase from the previous year’s total of £61,562 . This growth is particularly significant given the challenging "cost of living" climate in the UK, reflecting the deep commitment of our supporters.
Total expenditure for the period was £2,551 , primarily directed toward core operational needs. As of this reporting date, the charity holds no external investments, properties, maintaining a liquid position to support our upcoming capital projects.
