## **Overview** 

Nepali Samaj Nottingham continued to uphold its mission in 2023–24 by promoting Nepali culture, heritage, and community solidarity in Nottingham and surrounding areas. The financial year was marked by a range of cultural, social, and community-building events. The organisation has seen substantial engagement from the community and growth in membership. 

## **Major Events & Programmes** 

## **1. Nepali New Year 2081 Celebration** 

## **Date:** 10th April 2023 

The Nepali New Year 2081 was celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Nepali community in Nottingham and neighbouring cities. The event was honoured by the **Mayor of Nottingham** as the chief guest, alongside prominent representatives from Nepali organisations across the Midlands and England. The programme featured cultural performances, traditional food stalls, and community interaction. It served as a vibrant platform for reconnecting with cultural roots and reinforcing community ties. 

## **2. Midlands Nepali Mela 2023** 

## **Date:** 24th July 2023 

For the first time ever, **Nepali Samaj Nottingham East Midlands** successfully hosted the **Midlands Nepali Mela** in Nottingham. It was a historic occasion that brought together Nepali and British communities in a celebration of culture, sports, and food. Key highlights included: 

- Traditional Nepali food stalls from various regions. 

- Ethnic and indigenous cultural dances by children and adults, with a strong participation from women-led groups showcasing their identity through music and costumes. 

- Musical performances reflecting folk and contemporary Nepali music. 



- Traditional games such as volleyball, kabaddi, and football tournaments, alongside children’s games. 

   - The event brought a unique “mini-Nepal” experience to Nottingham and drew an overwhelmingly positive response from attendees across communities. 

## **3. Teej Festival 2023** 

**Date:** 18th September 2023 

**Venue:** Marcus Garvey Centre, Lenton 

Teej is one of the most colourful festivals celebrated by Nepali women, and this year’s celebration in Nottingham was a spectacular display of tradition and empowerment. The event paid homage to the role of women in Nepali society—as mothers, sisters, and pillars of culture. Women celebrated through traditional songs and dances that expressed joy, pain, devotion, and freedom. Sisters and friends gathered to share stories, prayers, and meals, creating an emotionally resonant and joyous atmosphere. The cultural richness and strong participation highlighted the enduring value of Teej in preserving our heritage abroad. 

## **4. Dashain & Tihar Celebrations 2023** 

**Date:** 30th October 2023 

**Venue:** Marcus Garvey Centre, Lenton 

The most significant Nepali festivals, Dashain and Tihar, were celebrated jointly, creating a vibrant platform for cultural unity. The evening featured traditional cuisine, dances symbolising the spirit of the festivals, and musical performances. Participants, including families and children, came dressed in festive attire. The celebrations aimed to share blessings, strengthen relationships, and pass down traditions to the younger generation. 

## **5. Deusi Bhailo 2023** 

**Dates:** 16th – 18th November 2023 

Deusi Bhailo, a beloved Tihar tradition, was celebrated across multiple households and venues in Nottingham. Members of Nepali Samaj Nottingham formed groups to perform traditional songs and dances, visiting community homes and spreading festive cheer. These visits also helped raise community donations and deepen bonds among members, replicating the cultural practices from Nepal here in the UK. 

## **6. Membership Expansion** 

Nepali Samaj Nottingham proudly welcomed **8 new life family members** during the 2023– 24 financial year. This growth demonstrates the increasing trust and commitment of the Nepali community in Nottingham to support and participate in collective efforts for cultural preservation and social development. 

## **7. Regular Donations** 



Throughout the year, the organisation received generous donations from individuals and local businesses. These contributions helped in organising successful events and supporting the operational needs of the organisation. The trustees express their sincere gratitude to all donors for their continued support. 

## **8. Annual General Assembly** 

**Date:** 27th November 2023 

The Annual General Assembly was held with active participation from trustees and general members. The meeting reviewed the past year’s events, financial statements, and plans for the upcoming year. Feedback from members was collected and incorporated into strategic planning for the future. 

## **9. Quarterly Trustee Meetings** 

The trustees held **four meetings** during the year—one in each quarter. These meetings were attended jointly by the trustee board and committee members. Discussions included budgeting, event planning, community welfare initiatives, and ongoing operational management. Important decisions were made with consensus to ensure the sustainable growth of the organisation. 

## **Conclusion** 

The financial year 2023–24 was a highly productive and culturally enriching year for **Nepali Samaj Nottingham** . With the guidance of its trustees and the enthusiastic support of its members, the organisation has continued to be a vibrant hub for the Nepali community in Nottingham. The trustees remain committed to fostering unity, celebrating culture, and ensuring the representation and support of the Nepali diaspora in the region. 

We thank all supporters, volunteers, and participants for making this year a success and look forward to further achievements in the coming year.
