Trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit in relation to all activities which the club have taken part in during the year in question:

- **(1)** Santa assisted at several community-based events over the Christmas period. A sleigh belonging to the charity completed street tours with Santa and his volunteers raising around £1,000 in donations.

- **(2)** Donations were made during the year and are listed in the Independent Examiner’s Report submitted

- **(3)** Newquay Beer Festival was run for the ninth occasion in September 2022 and raised over £15,000 after expenses, all of which was lodged in the club’s community or charity accounts and used to assist Lions International and local good causes

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

- **(4)** In 2019 the club had agreed to support the fundraising work of a local woman who had been diagnosed with stage four terminal cancer by acting as the administrator and providing the financial accountability and banking services. ‘Chrissie’s Sunshine Appeal’ which commenced during April 2019. The fundraising activities continue whilst these were slowed by the various lockdowns and restrictions and, Chrissie Jackson, who was an honorary member of the club, passed away during 2021. However, the club continue to lodge money donated in her name in their charity account and these amounts are distributed to good causes chosen by Chrissie and her family. From the Beer Festival 2022, Chrissie’s Sunshine Gin and Fizz Bar raised over £2,000.

- **(6)** The Community Christmas Lunch returned in December 2022 after a break of two years due to COVID and had an attendance of over 90 members of the community who were able to enjoy the food, company and entertainment free of charge thanks to the generous donation of £2,000 from a local businessman.

## **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)**

You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about:

- policy on grantmaking;

- policy programme related investment;

All grants are made after the club members have had the opportunity to discuss the merits of donations and vote on each. Those requesting grants are either asked to complete a grant application form or submit a request for up to £500 through the Quarterly Grant Scheme which invites local not-for-profit organisations to state what the money would be used for and the benefit which can be derived from this in the local community. The club grants officer will enquire and make recommendations to the business meeting accordingly and in line with the club policy on grant awards which is published on the club’s website. The club members will take the following into consideration in determining whether a grant or donation will be made: (a) the extent of the need of the or organisation requesting; (b) if a request is for a specific piece of equipment to be funded, are other sources of funding available (either as donations or from a statutory agency); (c) if the request is from another charity or good cause, to what extent are funds donated used to support the cause as opposed to being used for administrative purposes; (d) what opportunities have been taken by the applicant to assist themselves in raising funds and are the Lions possibly able to help them in this regard; (e) what potential exists for publicising any donation or grant (where appropriate) – e.g. by a Lions Club logo on a piece of equipment this raising the profile of the club and its purposes.
