All grants are made after the club members have had the opportunity to discuss the merits of donations and vote on each. Those requesting grants are either asked to complete a grant application form or submit a request for up to £500 through the Quarterly Grant Scheme which invites local not-for-profit organisations to state what the money would be used for and the benefit which can be derived from this in the local community. The club welfare officer will enquire and make recommendations to the business meeting accordingly. A 12-month fund to support Quarterly Grant submissions was agreed in February 2022 and guides the amount which can be granted during each quarter. The club members will take the following into consideration in determining whether a grant or donation will be made: (a) the extent of the need of the or organisation requesting; (b) if a request is for a specific piece of equipment to be funded, are other sources of funding available (either as donations or from a statutory agency); (c) if the request is from another charity or good cause, to what extent are funds donated used to support the cause as opposed to being used for administrative purposes; (d) what opportunities have been taken by the applicant to assist themselves in raising funds and are the Lions possibly able to help them in this regard; (e) what potential exists for publicising any donation or grant (where appropriate) – e.g. by a Lions Club logo on a piece of equipment this raising the profile of the club and its purposes.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

During the course of the year membership of the club started at 25 and ended at 25 volunteers. The main activities are shown at Section C above. The main achievements were maintaining the high profile of the club within the local community and organising events which both served the community and raised funds for good causes. The Beer Festival returned to being a significant success after the break of a year because of COVID but the community lunch which also provided support and friendship for members of the community who might not otherwise have the opportunity to socialise approaching Christmas was not held in 2021 as fears surrounding the possible prevalence of COVID still existed amongst those more vulnerable in the community. Requests for grants were able to be met from funds raised where it was agreed to offer assistance and the club administration fund (not collected from the public – only internal) remained in good standing.
