GSDT Trustees report to the Charity Commission
- The Trustees report The Trustees have met together for six meetings over the course of 2025. Much of our focus has been on the development of policies, the website, and seeking to develop our ongoing learning and development.
The Guidance document has been revised and is now included on the Trust website. All our documents, including Enquirers Forms and the Application Form for spiritual directors to join the Ecumenical Community have been updated. The Directory which details the availability of spiritual directors is updated on a regular basis. Our Treasurer Rosie Halford continues to provide regular details of our accounts. This is by no means an easy task because of the irregularly of payments coming into the account and because A Companions Way Course covers two accounting years.
We indirectly learned of the death of one of our Members during the year which led to a request for all Members, including those supervising to ensure that the person responsible for them during long term illness or death, notifies their directees or supervisees.
The safeguarding course arranged specifically for spiritual directors by Becca Faal at the Diocese of Gloucester was much appreciated by the 20 people who attended. This has been a very worthwhile course focussed as it is on the sort of safeguarding issues we might come across.
We met with Course Facilitators and Trustees together in October at St Peter’s in Leckhampton. This proved to be such a very worthwhile meeting that we decided it would be good to meet in person twice a year. Topics covered were mostly about improving communication as there are now fewer people involved as both Facilitators and Trustees.
For several of us the work has been primarily around the setting up of the Trust website. We have been very fortunate in that a colleague of David Vonberg’s was prepared to enable us and has set up the website through the Weebly platform. She has been incredibly patient with our lack of knowledge about websites. Fortunately, after much trial and error the new system seems to be working well. Most Enquirers are sending their forms in directly from the website to our dedicated email address. Spiritual Directors addresses are protected by Enquirers coming to them from the Weebly platform and not directly through their own email address. Enquirers cannot directly access the bios until they send in an application form and receive the password. Since January to June 2026,we have had 27 applications via the Trust website to join ECSD or to obtain a spiritual director. The Course website, A Companions Way will be integrated with the Trust website over the next few months.
Jo Joy has faithfully offered the Contemporary Prayer evenings once a month which have shifted slightly in their focus to providing a range of deeply reflective evenings together. These evenings are open to all ECSD members however often they are able to join.
We continue our search for new Trustees. Anne Solomon who was a Foundation Trustee and has given so much to the Network, the Course as a Tutor/Facilitator/Speaker left in July after many years of contribution to the development of spiritual direction training and support. Kate Stacey who has been the Diocese of Gloucester representative for the past year has a new job
in Oxford. Kate has been helpful with the interface of the Church of England requirements for safeguarding and that of a small Trust like ours. We will miss her preparedness to help.
Liz Palin has joined us. Liz has a wealth of experience of retreat centres, is ordained and works within the Diocese of Gloucester in the Stroud area.
I will finish my term as a trustee in September, so we are actively looking for a new Trustee and Chair.

A Companion’s Way Course – Siobhan Smith

Course M - After a bumpy start delayed by delayed applications - the course was wonderful. All were engaged in the process, and it was sad to say goodbye to Jo Joy who had been a part of the facilitator team for so many years. Thanks also to Caroline Gilderdale and Ann Bully who took on the administration tasks. James a participant on Course M led us in the poetry and prayer reflection at the end of the AGM.

Course N - started with the welcome weekend in February. The quality of the 11 new participants is promising, and they are gelling into a wonderful group. The two new facilitators, Marguerite and David, who was a participant on Course M are working well - a lovely team. Another participant Pauline has taken on the administrator role. The warm relationship with Holland House feels like the course home base.

The Ecumenical Community of Spiritual Directors
- The Directory of Directors – Ann Morris
It has taken a long time to develop a safe process for linking directors with directees online. It was essential to persist because the old way of discerning and suggesting a director to an enquirer was unsustainable. Now the enquirer can prayerfully choose to explore which bio may particularly appeal to their needs. We suggest they only explore one director at a time. We have made sure that only essential information is included - the director’s home town, whether Zoom or in person is offered, and whether a donation or fee is required for a session.
Currently 37 directors have their bios on the website:

2 have still to confirm that the link is working.

7 directors with no current availability will soon be added - with NO CURRENT AVAILABILITY at the top of their bio. This will mean that we can make a quick alteration to the availability status of directors without having to add and delete.

12 directors have also submitted their bios - but do not want them on the website.

There are still a number of directors who have not submitted a new application form or bio.

Continuing Development – Siobhan Smith
The provision of resources and training for continuing development was an objective in our CIO document

Siobhan is working with Helen Stanton, Warden of Holland House to plan and host training days there - collaborating with the Worcester Spiritual Directors leaders to put on joint training sessions

3 dates have been planned for 2026 - including a session with Stephen Parker on coaching/direction on 2[nd] September. Jenna Burn has been approached for a session on the creative arts for SDs, and Siobhan herself on mindfulness, and David Vonberg on masculine/feminine spirituality probably in 2027

Dates: 17[th] June, 2[nd] September and 28[th] November 2026.

The days will start at 10m, and end at 3pm.

Proposed cost £40 to include lunch - there is a bursary fund at Holland House for applicants who wish to access the training but need a little financial support.

The speaker’s input will be in the morning, and there will be time after lunch to reflect/discuss.

Any suggestions for a theme or presenter would be welcome.
Most of those attending the AGM were interested in attending these training opportunities.

Jo Joy suggested considering an invitation to Michèle le Roux - a member of Parker Palmer’s organisation ‘Centre for Courage and Renewal’. She has delivered a session for the London Spirituality Centre - but may live too far away for this to be practical.

Directory of Supervisors – Chris Mason
The present: The supervisors group currently has 14 people on the circulation list and 13 actively involved in supervision of whom: 11 are female, 2 are male, comprising 8 clergy and 5 lay people. Between them the group brings 74.5 years’ experience to this privileged work of supporting spiritual directors.
Looking back in 2025
Seven supervisors met informally using Zoom on 16[th] June which involved:

b) Pausing to reflect on Rumi’s poem, The Guest House

c) Considering two key questions in small break out groups:

‘ What I’ve found helpful in my work is …’ (about sharing gifts)

‘ What I’ve found really difficult in my work is … ’ (about sharing vulnerability)

d) Conversation around how we build a culture of support, community and learning

e) A general tracking of our work concerning numbers (1:1 and/or groups), capacity, and whether supervision-on-supervision was in place for everyone. è
Nine supervisors attended a three hour CPD training session on Wednesday 15[th] October for which the cost per person was £20.00. The theme was ‘ Supervision of spiritual directors through the lens of transactional analysis – what does that look like?’ and led by Neil Keenan, a UKCP registered psychotherapist and clinical supervisor and Director of the Wyvern Institute. The aim of the event was to introduce supervisors to the essential features of TA as they might surface in spiritual direction, looking at:

its origins and history
-
the structure of the Parent, Adult, Child ego states
-
the origins of life scripts
-
the nature of communication as transactions: parallel, crossed, ulterior
-
the drama and empowerment triangles
-
Subsequently, all participants were sent a copy of the PowerPoint presentation and a certificate of attendance.
Revd. David Vonberg joined the group as a supervisor and his gifts and experience will be much appreciated.
During the year, enquiries from spiritual directors both for supervision (4) and supervisionon-supervision have been relatively few (1). It was unfortunate that there was insufficient interest in a 5 week x 1 hour online training in supervision during February/March led by Val Mullally on the importance of keeping on TRAKC in supervision (trust, resilience, authenticity, kindness and candour).
Looking forward to 2026
Plans are in place to hold an informal meeting on Wednesday 28[th] April and a continuing development event in October with details to be publicised.
