The overall position of the Trust at the end of December 2023:
The year started with £12261 in the bank accounts and ended the year with £15697 – very satisfactory!
We received £1072 from the closure of the Spirituality Network for Gloucestershire, who trust us to further the support of spirituality in our area. I allocated this money to the directory/ECSD pot. Much of the extra money in the bank account comes from the work of the course, A Companion’ Way. We have agreed that the Ecumenical Community of Spiritual Directors will host events that are self-supporting. We will propose a small annual membership fee to cover administration and website costs.
The financial position of the two years of Course L – 2022-3, the first blended course. The facilitators set the fees on an estimated budget based on the previous in-person course, balancing the savings made by not having a regular venue, less facilitator travel, but with more spent on weekends (an introductory weekend, and IGR and a workshop weekend). We hoped to break even with a minimum number of 12 students, but supported 17 participants.
We were prepared to make a small loss, seed money to experiment with this new format. However, because of the prudence of the team, the course ended with an excess of income over expenditure of £5372 over the two years. This will help fund any shortfall in Course M.

The Trustees are now in the process of setting an annual budget to future proof the finances and attract income.
A Companion’s Way: Siobhan Smith
Course L was our first blended course – on Zoom and in person events. It has proven to be a successful and enjoyable way of being a learning community.
Course M was due to start at the beginning of 2024 – but due to a glitch on the website – seekers were unable to apply for several months. As there were only 8 applicants in January, the course start date was postponed, and will begin in May 2024 with 16 participants.
Joe Neary has joined the facilitator team, and two former participants on course L have divided up the administrative tasks between them to support the facilitators – Caroline Gilderdale and Ann Bulley.

Work will continue during 2024 to revise the Directory to confirm active directors. Plus revamping the master forms – application and seeking a spiritual director – to make the process more user friendly and comply with data protection.

Introducing the concept of short 100-150 word biographies to those finishing Course L and those who have newly joined the Trust – to set out what they have to offer as Spiritual Directors

Reviewing the Trust document – on going – particularly as we have had difficulty formally appointing representatives from the dioceses of Clifton and Gloucester

Plans – to offer a Zoom meeting on 27th June 2024 for all Members of ECSD to discuss future topics for on going support and training and the use of biographies. Recruitment of new Trustees or Members willing to be involved – particularly with Website development and organising on-going training.

Revising the management of matching directors to directees - Pam Wright is on the team in Hereford Diocese and is willing to share their search on how best to do this – a topic that is currently an issue for all who manage Directories.
