STAND AGAINST MND ANNUAL RETURN FINANCIAL YEAR ENDING 31 MARCH 2024
Stand Against MND (‘ SAM ’, ‘ Charity ’) was registered as a charitable incorporated organisation on 17 January 2020 following Sam Perkins being diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in March 2019. The purposes of the Charity are:
(1) to raise funds and awareness to support research into a cure for MND; and
(2) to provide funds to support palliative care services that assist those who are affected by MND, including those diagnosed with MND, but also their family and friends.
We are proud to report that the Charity continues to achieve its objectives through a range of fundraising activities and promotional events coordinated by a range of individuals and organisation with or on behalf of the Charity.
A message from our founder, Sam Perkins:
Every year when I think about writing this message, it provides a welcome opportunity for me to reflect on the previous twelve months and what Stand Against MND has achieved. Not only that but to consider my own journey and how I have changed in the last year.
From a personal point of view this year has been the most challenging for me to date. My condition continues to progress and cause its own difficulties, but there is no doubt that Stand Against MND provides me with my reason to remain resilient. For this above all else, I am grateful to our incredible supporters and fundraisers, who continue to outdo themselves.
There is so much to look back on and be thankful for. My personal highlights relate to my own challenges which were of course my Marathon endeavours. Those experiences took me through every emotion possible, and I am so grateful for my team for helping me through them. At this point I am nervously awaiting my London 2024 attempt and I very much hope to be reporting good news in twelve months’ time.
Stand Against MND has become so much more than my personal fundraising. We donated over £90,000 this calendar year which is a staggering achievement and could not be done

without our incredible supporters. No where is that better demonstrated than through the success of this years’ golf day, and the enthusiastic response to our Fifty50 campaign.
There is so much to look forward to and so much to achieve and aspire to. Which is an incredible thing to write for a man more than five years into a terminal diagnosis. I can’t wait to see what else we can achieve together. Thank you Stand Against MND.
There are as always too many people to thank individually, however I must make special mention of Chrissie Wellington OBE who agreed to become our second patron this year. Chrissie has become a close friend and incredible personal support over the last year. I am eternally grateful for her counsel and boundless enthusiasm.

1. OUR YEAR IN REVIEW
Fundraising and Awareness[1]
We have set out our flagship fundraising challenges, events and partnerships below to give a flavour of how we raise funds to support research into a cure for MND and services offering palliative care to those diagnosed with the disease.
FIFTY/50 CAMPAIGN
10[th] October 2023 saw Sam launch the Fifty/50 Campaign on the BBC Radio Nottingham Breakfast Show to invite at least fifty fundraisers to raise £500 each to generate a minimum of £25,000 – every penny of which would be donated to research into a cure for MND.
When a person is diagnosed with MND, they are told that there is a 50/50 chance of them surviving for the next two years. The Fifty/50 Campaign represents that deveastating statistic and seeks to change it for the better.
Sam worked hard to raise awareness and was featured on BBC East Midlands Today to promote the Campaign and raise awareness of MND.
The Campaign will run until September 2024 but we have already had lots of fundraisers commiting to raise £500 in anyway they want! So far, we have seen teams and individuals undertake challenges such as mountain climbing, marathon running, cake baking and so much more!
Olly and his Mum are fantastic members of the Stand Against MND family. When Olly's grandad passed away from MND, Olly decided he wanted to do something about it. Olly was one of the first to sign up for the Fifty/50 Campaign and will be selling football cards and making hampers. He’s set himself a whopping target of £2k!
We can’t thank our supporters enough for joining us in our Stand Against MND.
1 The charity raises funds from the public without engaging with professional fundraisers. The charity worked informally, without the need for a formal written agreement, with a small number of commercial organisations in the FYE 31 March 2024 including, HDI Global and Delichon Limited. The charity did not receive income from contracts with central government or local authorities or from outside the United Kingdom.

One More Marathon - London Marathon 2023
Sam recruited a team of talented and determined people who were not only capable of running a marathon but also had the skills necessary to care for Sam’s increasingly complex needs on the move.
The Charity cannot thank these volunteers enough for their time, energy and incredible support.
Thank you Chrissie, Tom, Steph and Frank.
To make the epic journey to London with all of the race kit and Sam’s personal kit, Sam worked with HDI Global as corporate sponsors of his marathon challenge and Delichon to procure a bespoke race chair.
4
The challenge of running one of the World’s most popular marathon’s is already significant, but adding in complex care needs requiring equipment, careful monitoring and skilled caregivers adds another layer. The day of the marathon started with high-spirits and a certain amount of nerves along with London’s finest grey and wet weather. The team started strong and held a pace faster than most runners in their start group.
Sadly, late on in the race, the race chair suffered a technical fault for which the team were unable to repair on the track and the London Marathon Challenge came to an abrupt and disappointing end. Sam gave an emotional interview to the BBC after he crossed the finish line saying he didn’t feel like he had completed the marathon as the route had to be cut short.
The London Marathon Challenge was well-supported by attendees at the event, raised over £20,000 (including Gift Aid) and gave the Charity an incredible opportunity to raise its profile.
We are incredibly grateful for all of those who helped with preparations for the race and who made the trip down to support.

Buckled But Not Broken – Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon 2024
After having to cut short his route at the London Marathon and not one to ever give up easily, through his contacts, Sam secured a place at the Leeds Marathon…just three weeks after the London Marathon!
Through Sam’s determination and strength of character, he took the brave decision to attempt the Leeds Marathon after the partially completed One More Marathon attempt. This time it was personal for Sam who has never received a ‘DNF’ (did not finish) at any race he has ever attempted, whether before or after his MND symptoms took hold.
In accordance with Sam’s
wishes, the Charity agreed not to undertake specific fundraising for this challenge but used the Leeds Marathon as an opportunity to continue to raise awareness of the Charity and its causes. This was the inaugural Leeds Marathon and among those taking part were Rugby League legends and MND Association patrons Rob Burrow MBE and Kevin Sinfield OBE. Throughout the race, the two MND campaigners were racing toe to toe with Rob and Kevin crossing the finish line just a couple of minutes before Sam and his team.
Considering the length of time taken to prepare logistics for the London Marathon, the Charity would like to publicly acknowledge the incredible efforts of all at the Leeds Marathon and the amazing run and support team who not only got Sam to the start line…..but also the finish line!!!
6
Golf Day and Gala Dinner
Sam and all at the charity were blown away with the support shown to funding research into MND at the weekend. Using his eyes, Sam spent hours and hours last week making sure everything was perfect for the event. His resilience and determination continues to astound us all. You may even recognise some of the faces who came out to support us.

2. DONATIONS
The Charity is thrilled to have made the following donations totalling £93,493.00 in FYE 31 March 2024.
In line with the Charity donation policy, most donations were made towards organisations, such as the MND Association, for the purpose of research. The Charity has committed to a total donation of £100,000 to a research project being run by The University of Nottingham alongside the MND Association.
The Charity is also proud to have donated funds to palliative care services in and around the Nottinghamshire area.

3. TRUSTEE REPORT
Finances
The Charity's financial period runs from 1 April to 31 March.
At the start of the financial year ending 31 March 2023 the Charity carried over £18,916.00
Income for the financial year ending 31 March 2024 was £93,493.00 Expenses for the financial year ending 31 March 2024 was £10,629.00 Donations for the financial year ending 31 March 2024 was £75,000.00
This meant at the end of the financial year the Charity held £26,780.00, which is still more than the Charity's constitution originally intended. The reason for this is that the Charity raised £7,864.00 in the last month of the financial year.
Going forward the Charity is going to examine how much money it should be holding at any one time due to the significant amount of money we are now raising.
The Charity trustees received no remuneration for the work they did as trustees.
The Trustees declare that there have been no serious incidents and, as such, no serious incidents have been reported to the Charity Commission.
Trustee payments
Through the business, Aloha Creative Limited, Rebecca Clark (trustee and director of Aloha Creative Limited) received payment of £6,444.80 for graphic design, merchandise and printing services provided to the charity.
