Charity name Charity registration number Trustees Waterberg Rhino UK 1187429 Lucy Asprey William Asprey Belinda Chaffer (chair) Bill Curral Edward Peel Roger Stringer MBE **Total receipts to 31.03.24 Total grants to 331.03.24** **£101,925.41 £112,003.20** Aims and Objectives - To fundraise and raise awareness for the protection and conservation of rhino and other endangered wildlife in the Waterberg region of South Africa. - To fundraise and provide support for projects which advance the education and conservation of the environment in the Waterberg. - To support projects which bring social and economic upliftment for the community in the Waterberg. - To raise awareness of the plight of the rhino and other endangered wildlife in the UK. ## **Overall view of the year 2023-24** The Trustees are pleased to report that in its fourth year of operation, Waterberg Rhino UK has achieved over £100,000 in receipts for the third year running. With these substantial funds, we have been able to strengthen support for ongoing projects that are making a real difference to the challenges faced in the region. Our main priority is the security and protection of one of the last remaining populations of rhino on the planet. Waterberg Rhino has given a significant proportion of funds to update and install new ANPR cameras at strategic points, increasing intelligence and containment of criminal activity in the region. This not only helps protect rhino and other wildlife, but also brings a greater sense of safety to the community as a first alert to crime, medical emergences and also outbreaks of fire. We have also given considerable commitment to equipping rangers. This has included bullet-proof vests, mobile cameras, uniforms, boots, medical leg-kits, thermal drone, night-ops torches, battery packs and bivvies, all of which helps anti-poaching teams do their difficult job more effectively and safely. The Limpopo Rhino Orphanage, the first of its kind in the world, received a grant to install a solar system, improving electrical supply, security and communication. Waterberg Rhino also donated to Waterberg Wild Dogs to help with a collaring project to monitor one of two packs in the region. Another focus of Waterberg Rhino’s endeavours is contribution to the well-being of the community, bringing opportunities through education and environmental projects. At the time of writing, our Food Gardens Scheme, in collaboration with Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, is reaching the culmination of the second Garden Competition. Launched in February 2024, this serves to encourage schools and community groups in the region to enter into various categories, including best garden, most improved and sustainable, to win cash prizes which go back into the gardens. The level of involvement has been inspiring, demonstrating the great dedication of teachers and volunteers to improve the diet and nutrition of children in their schools. The scheme helps feed over 3,000 children. Our support of established educational organisations continues, with grants to the Waterberg Academy bursary fund, and to the excellent Lapalala Wilderness School for 60 children to attend a 3-day conservation course. On a smaller scale, we have also funded talks on anti-poaching and football coaching in local schools, with plans for greater involvement. Fundraising through our annual events has seen wider endorsement, with our annual Ride for Rhinos, a 250km horseback safari in the Waterberg, sold out until 2026. We have also been considerably assisted by sculptor Zoe Carmichael, who has donated 15% from sales her bronze of rhino calf Tyson to the charity, by African Horse Safaris Foundation and by the initiative 1% for the Planet. ## **Plans for the Future** Working with the community to bring greater collaboration is of utmost importance to bring further improvement for both people and wildlife in the Waterberg. It is a question of listening and understanding what will make a difference, and implementing funds with the greatest efficacy. Waterberg Rhino UK is committed to greater security and a sense of well-being overall, whether this be for rhino, for schools and food supply, for education and economic opportunities. As one of the last remaining populations of rhino in the world, the Waterberg requires united and wide-reaching support to achieve a sustainable future.
