## **Aims and objectives**
- To fundraise and raise awareness for the protection and conservation of rhino and other endangered wildlife in the Waterberg region of South Africa
- To fundraise and provide support for projects that advance the education and conservation of the environment in the Waterberg
- To support projects that bring social and economic upliftment for the community in the Waterberg
- To raise awareness of the plight of the rhino and other endangered wildlife in the UK
Waterberg Rhino UK (charity no 1187429) received its registration as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation from the Charity Commission on 17 January 2020. We had our first trustees meeting in London on 4[th] March 2020.
Very soon after, the UK was placed in lockdown. Like everyone else, it was necessary to rethink all strategy on fundraising and events, with no idea how long we were all going to be in this situation.
## **Projects supported 2020-21**
With concurrent lockdown in South Africa, the safari lodges in the Waterberg closed and with that the flow of income from tourism. Our first priority was to act to secure funds for security patrols to protect rhino in the region.
- With all fundraising going online, we organized 2 prize draws raising £13,084.75 in total. The total cost for the year to cover the patrols has been £22,545.92. While recently there has been a trickle of international tourists, who have managed to make it to South Africa, funding is still ongoing to ensure the safety of rhino in the region.
- The charity’s other main area of concern has been the well-being of the community during there difficult times, with many laid off work, and children unable to go to school due to closures. During the winter months of August and September 2020, we were able to provide fruit and e-pap to schoolchildren in the Vaalwater area to aid nutrition.
- We have been fortunate to be supported in our endeavours by Jessica Babich who is based in the Waterberg. She works on a consultancy basis for the charity and is able to facilitate and oversee the rolling out of funding for projects.
- To mark World Rhino Day on 22 September, we were able to send a donation to the Waterberg Academy for its bursary fund, which enables as many children as possible from the local area to benefit from the excellent education that is provided by this independent school. We also donated funds for prizes at the Lapalala Wilderness School annual public speaking competition, which aims to encourage conservation champions for the future.
- In November 2020, we were alerted to the fact that the local police station near Vaalwater, had been without water for 3 months, an unsustainable situation during a pandemic. With the help of local landowners who provided a pump, we were able to pay for the installation of a borehole to supply water.
- Other community-based help has included funds to Security Interest Group (SIG), to buy first-aid equipment in its role alongside the South African police in preventing a medical emergency becoming a fatal one in the rural areas in the Waterberg.
- Alongside the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve (WBR), the charity has reinitiated funding for food garden schemes to 8 schools, a clinic and a community co-operative, enabling some 2,885 children to receive fresh vegetables as part of their diet at school. In this we have been fortunate to have the help of Daniel Mashasha to oversee the gardens and support the community. This is an ongoing project with plans for further funding through the WBR.
- In July 2020, Waterberg Rhino UK was approached by the founders of Urban Rhino Gin who chose the charity to support through sales of their premium brand of gin. Despite an unbelievably tough first year for the company, Urban Rhino was able to donate funds for the purchase of binoculars for the rangers working in Atherstone Provincial Park.
With the plans at the start of 2020 to hold live events destroyed by Covid, it has been heartening to have success through online fundraising and the support by so many, much through direct mailing. We have also received funding through sales of Christmas cards, a specially designed WRUK storm lantern, bush straps, sales of artwork and pyjamas.
## **Plans for the future**
In normal circumstances, the trustees would travel to the Waterberg to visit the organizations and individuals with whom we work but again with travel restrictions, this has been impossible. Through the great generosity of a donor through Goldman Sachs Gives, we have been able to take on Jessica Babich as our vital on-the-ground consultant, who oversees projects in the region and acts as our liaison with organisations, thus enabling the charity to give funds with confidence.
At the time of writing, the annual Ride for Rhinos, the charity’s main fundraiser, a 300km ride on horseback through the Waterberg, has been transformed into a virtual 8,000-mile hackathon. The idea is that riders from all over the world come together to accumulate the distance from the UK to SA while raising funds for the charity. With the hope that international travel will resume later in the year, the 2022 Ride for Rhinos, scheduled to take place in January in the Waterberg, is sold out, with interest already in the 2023 Ride.
Despite a difficult and testing first year for the charity, the trustees of Waterberg Rhino UK are extremely grateful for the level of support shown in terms of donations. They are confident that the charity will be able to continue to meet the requests for funding from the Waterberg community in order to help it protect the iconic rhino and the environment in which it lives, while bringing support to sustain and improve people’s livelihoods.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended **DD / MM / YYYY** .
