Trustees’ Annual Report
KILBURN STATE OF MIND Charity registration number: 1187381
April 1st 2020 to March 31[st] 2021
Objectives
Kilburn State of Mind (KSOM) aims to make a difference and improve the lives of people in Kilburn and the surrounding area. Through its work using music and ICT it endeavours to challenge the problems of hardship, inequality and isolation.
By providing their services free of charge to the local community they focus on offering learning opportunities and support with I.T, computing and music for people who otherwise may not have the opportunity to learn and to access these opportunities.
Activities
KSOM are embedded in the community on a housing estate in Kilburn and have space and equipment which are a valuable resource for many people including local residents, young musicians, older people. They offer a programme which includes free music tuition , mentoring and use of the music and IT studio facilities.
They also offer ongoing ICT support and training especially for elderly or housebound residents
Volunteers
Their volunteer team includes a wide variety of local musicians with many different skills and talents. They also have a number of ICT specialists who have been able to make invaluable contributions.
The individuals who have volunteered for KSOM have also benefited greatly by their involvement in terms of confidence, sense of worth, employment opportunities and improvement in mental health.
A number of computers and IT equipment has been donated to KSOM which has been passed on to people needing them in the community, alongside advice and support on its use.
Achievements and Performance over past year
KSOM acknowledged that due to Covid-19 restrictions the need for elderly residents in particular to have basic skills and facilities to use for communications and internet usage was larger and more crucial for wellbeing than ever.
It was arranged that socially distanced and risk assessed tuition be prepared for residents and community members ,much taught online and there would be prepared exercises for beneficiaries to study at home.
KSOM also offered a mentoring scheme, where residents could get in contact with any technical problems that they were facing. This helped them greatly to counter the impact of restrictions on isolation, anxiety and their mental health.
We were a partner with Brent 2020 Culture Fund and when much of their programme had been cancelled due to COVID we offered the Brent 2020 Music Course aimed particularly at Young people. Other partners included the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in Kilburn.
When there was a break in the COVID restrictions, 2 very successful community music events were run in December 2020 .Kilburn Live Music at the Fiddler and Jam Night at the Stables Kingsbury. They were extremely well received and a great encouragement to consider and plan for future events.
Also in December, KSOM was the subject of a 2page feature in the Kilburn Times newspaper.
As a new charity and in spite of COVID restrictions during the year , KSOM has been able to adapt and change where necessary and to continue to have significant impact of improving and enhancing the lives of the local community.
It has become increasingly known and highly regarded in the local area and beyond and also by other cultural and civic organisations. It is known for its unique creative, compassionate and committed attitude
and for its ability to engage and bring together inspired talented musicians and diverse local communities.
