Activities and Objectives
We provide a range of help to families in our community. This includes help with translation of letters etc where people cannot speak much English; financial help when people are suffering because of their asylum status; emotional support when people are feeling lonely or depressed; linking them in to existing services (public sector and other charities) when they need specific help.
2
Guineans and Friends in Swansea
We encourage families to help and support each other. Many people are reluctant to ask for help but in a social setting at our meetings they are encouraged to speak about their problems.
How are these services provided in practice?
We run a regular get together each week.
We will help people with little or no English make appointments (for example with the doctor). We sit down with people and explain what letters or bills mean and what they need to do.
We encourage and support people to enrol on courses to learn English. We work closely with the Police and other organisations to help create a safer Swansea.
Last summer we had a grant to provide football lessons for the children and young people.
Recently we supported a young woman to make contact first with City of Sanctuary at Swansea CVS then with Social Services and Home Office to get her paperwork sorted out.
Although people from Guinea are the main focus of our charity purpose we include “and Friends” in our name because we are inclusive for all nationalities.
Who is providing the services and how are the trustees satisfied that they are suitably qualified to do so?
We have no paid staff. All services are carried out by families supporting each other. What we do are Guineans with caring minds and helping hands looking out for their community.
How are the trustees satisfied that everything they provide is a suitable means of furthering their charitable purposes?
Everything we do is to help people become more “at home” in their community, build their lives here in Wales and begin to contribute to society they have settled in.
As said above, social events provide emotional support for people who would otherwise be lonely and often depressed and the opportunity to talk about their problems / ask for help in a safe place.
Safeguarding
The way the charity operates is all about looking out for each other.
As stated above our work with children and young people is limited to families within our community and any activity will include parents.
