## **Governance and management**
The charity is operated under the rules of its constitution adopted 13 January 2020.
The trustees are recruited from support networks and association with Hope Long Eaton in a volunteer role. Prospective trustees are invited to a meeting of trustees and if appropriate are appointed by a formal trustee vote.
Judi Smart had previously indicated that she would like to step down as a trustee and this was accepted at the June 2022 trustees meeting.
Due to our increased turnover we instructed CA Plus to become our accountants and also Fido payroll to oversee our staff payroll and pension contributions.
## **Objectives and activities**
1.The advancement of the Christian faith for the public benefit by providing worship, training, mentoring, befriending and assisting those in need.
2.To promote social inclusion for the public benefit within a Christian ethos by preventing people from becoming socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society.

## **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit**
Activities include:

- Holiday Activities for children
- Manna food boxes
- Food giveaway
- Petersham Play pals toddler group
Our main income comes from Donations and grants from local churches and individuals, from local authorities and other charitable organisations.
## **Public benefit statement**
We fund a breakfast café, with food giveaway and we facilitate the presence of citizen’s advice, run a mum and toddler group. We have a bicycle repair and refurbishment scheme both to provide bicycles for health benefit (including organised rides) and to help fix and repair bicycles for local people. We run holiday activities for young people to promote physical and mental health and social engagement.
We enable local people to engage in a range of activities at low or no cost which helps alleviate isolation, provide food, support and advice where needed.
The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit, 'Charities and Public Benefit'.
## **Achievements and performances over the last year.**
Our Breakfast cafe numbers continue to grow and are getting close to pre-covid levels. Also our Play pals toddler group started to meet weekly from January 2023 thanks to some extra funding from Erewash Borough council. In June we secured funding from Active communities for our breakfast cafe, toddler group and also for a proposed family cooking course and youth cafe. The last 2 activities are yet to start as the Petersham Hall committee have reservations about allowing young people into the building and also that the cooking class will make a mess in the hall. Discussions are ongoing.
Over the 2023 summer holidays we ran weekly family activity sessions on The Petersham estate. These were held every Friday and covered activities such as Sports day, craft morning, Superheroes day with visits from the Police, Fire brigade, and first aiders. The last activity was a Beach party when over 160 residents came together for a party which had a beach, bouncy castle, face painting, crafts and a free lunch. All this took place on a closed road outside the Petersham hall. We have been working with other organisations to provide support for 400 asylum seekers housed in 2 local hotels. The support has varied from holding donations from local individuals and organisations to purchasing and distributing underwear and winter clothing which has been given out to those in need. We also obtained a

grant from Sport England to purchase sports equipment which was used in the hotels such as table tennis tables, Basketball, volleyball, football and cricket equipment. The funding also covered some gym memberships at local hotels and spare and tools for repairing pushbikes which the asylum seekers use. All this was to try and get them out of their rooms and active therefore aiding their mental wellbeing. Our Manna Food box has continued to hold its numbers and we have opened a second distribution point in Sawley.
We continue to collect surplus food and past best before food from local supermarkets and distribute it at both our Breakfast cafe and manna food boxes projects. We also support Welcome on Wednesday a local community meal with this surplus food.
We continue to refurbish donated bikes to raise money for the charity as well as carrying out repairs to local people’s bikes.
Our projects are overseen by our Project Director Carl McCarthy who manages a team of around 30 volunteers.
## **The charity’s policy on reserves**
The aim of the charity is to have 3 months reserves. For Hope Long Eaton this is estimated at £3,500. The Trustees are aware that the designated funds cannot be generally considered as part of a reserve.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Hope Long Eaton (the charity) for the year ended 31 August 2023.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **Description of restricted funds:**
**Asylum support** – Funds to provide support to asylum seekers. Including ensuring availability to warm clothing, supporting community engagement and facilitating asylum seekers moving from hotel accommodation.

**Asylum sports activities** – Funding to provide sporting equipment (football, table tennis etc.) for use by asylum seekers, as well as obtaining access for asylum seekers to local leisure centres for various exercise activities, supporting physical and mental health.
**Bikes** - This fund is used to produce components and support the refurbishment of bicycles.
**Manna Food boxes** - This scheme provides food boxes to help families and individuals to have access to food at a cost significantly lower than supermarket prices. This scheme gives people access to food whilst helping people to budget, giving the dignity of providing for themselves.
**Street Games** - Funding to facilitate engagement with sport and play activities, usually in open spaces. Typically taking place during school holiday, the scheme allows provision of sporting and play activities. Funding allows positive healthy activity particularly during school holidays.
