CHARITY COMMISSION FOR ENGLANO AND WALES Trustees, Annual Report for the poriod From 1.4.2023 {period start date) To 31.3.2024 (period end dats) Charlty name: Sleep Pod Charlty registratlon number: 1187295 Objectives and Activities SORP ref8rer Para 1.17 Sumrnary af the purposes of the charity as set out in its goveming document To provide a on8-person emergency shelter wherever there is a need. This shelter. called a Sleep Pcd is used by rough sleepers and refugees. After inventing Sleep Pod our main purpose becama multi-faceted. We became focussed on raising funds for materkals, preparing all the matsrials ready for build sessions. We then started to organise volunteer build sessions and then work with distribution partners so the most vulnerable people were prioritised in tams of giving Ihe Sleep Pod emergency shelter lo recipients. We have developed proc2sses during the last few years to be as effective as possible, building valuable relationships with businesses. charities. groups and indiwduals that add real value to what we do. We currently support P8ople all over the UK and within parts of EuropE. Surnmary of the main actiwlies in relation to Ihose purposes forthe public ber)errt. in particular, the activities, projects or services id8ntifi8d in the accounts. Para 1.17 arn> 1.19 Fundraising We engage in various activrties lo ensure we have enough funds to purchase and prepare Sleep Pod materials. These activities include, face to fac£ tundraising, approaches to trusts I foundations, corporate Sleep Pod build workshops and supplwng chartty partners. Together with various olIne fijndraising carnpaigns we are delighted to have had enough money to cover the Ix)sts of all our activities. Our charity is very scalable and as such more funds would correlate with more acti and more le would benefit from 33437439 1
having their own Sleep F>od emergency shelter. Purchase and material proparation Once we the funds, we purchase materials from have a variety of suppliers thal we have buitt goLJ WOTking relations with. They are delivered and we then start the work of preparing all materials for building. We cut and prepare all building materials to ensur8 they are the correcl size and shape and each ple is quality dlethed before being allowed to leave site and then used in a Sleep Pod build. Build Nealry all of our Sleep Pod Building now takes part in 3 prisons Addiewell in Scotland, Peterborough and Lowiham Grange. We have a team in each prison who build our pods. In addttion we run a number of (xrporate builds to raise finance but the number build this way is small. Corporate Sleep Pod build WOTkshops- We will have at least 1 13 build leaders. We guide participants in bu1 techniques as well as ensurtng that quality is the most important factor that we concentrate on at every stage. At the beginning of each corF()rate build, we ensure that participants understand that each Sleep Pod is destined for a person and then at the end of each sessTrDn we are at pains to explain the harsh realty of lrfe on the streets. Distribution We have built up a good lisl of distrtbution partners - all of which have a good working know of the streets l area in which they operate. All of our pathers know what is expected of them in temis of methodical and fair S18ep Pod distribution. We are at pains lo explain that a Sleep Pod is never intended to be a long term solution, it should be saen as an èmergency sh61ter only. We require our partners to gift all Sla&p Pods lo the user- they are rt permitted to sell Ihem. Also we require that every time a Sleep Pod is gifted to someonè a 'contacf sticker is written out and attached to the Sleep Pod, this will proVe contact details for a perEon I organisation in their area who is able lo help them seek a more ermanent solution to their 33437439 1
rough sleeping. It is hoped that in this waywe can (x)nlribute to a situation where the rough sleeper is able lo move off th8 streets so that the night they sleep in a Sleep Pod for the first time might be their last. The contact sticker indicates the very real desire of Sleep Pod that every person is given suitable accommodation. Our forever aim as a charity is therefore to become obsolete and to see an 8nd to all rou h slee The trustees take their duties a5 trustees very sersously. In relation to this we are aware of and have studied the guidance prowd8d by tha Charity Commission to ensure that we comply with the standards expected of us in all of our activities. In nn8ction with this Complian the Charity is supported by Ihe Charity T8am at Cripps (law firm) and thè team at Crowe (accountants.) We regularly 5e8k their adM¢e about best practice and the requirements on us in connection wtth the operations of the Charity. Taking all of this logethèr we believe we are l)oth well advised and well aware of our duties - and critically- well pois8d to s8ek further help and guidance where n8cessa ststement confimiing whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit Para 1.18 Additional inf¢xmation (optional) You ma chcKJse to indude further slatemenls where relewdnl atUl. Corporats Sloep Pod builds e where we tak8 Qur Sleep pod build workshop into a company to support their Corporate Soc4al Responsibility (CSR) liaes. This practical, real-worfd activity has been extremely Well-reIVed by the Companls and participants. Where possible we will ty arKI engage with a local charity to come in and collect the completed Sleep Pods- but this is not aKvays the case. For this seNce we offer different levels of support to catar for dtff8renl budgets and desires for impact. For example, if requested we can connect the company and th8 Sleep Pod building activity with a film maker and or a Public Relations companies so the story of the Corporate Sleep Pod build can be understood by the companies, customers. suppliers, market Sector and ry)tential nèw customers. To this end S18ep Pod buikj workshops are seen as werful and uni ue. 33437439 1

Financial Review Review of tho charily's financial position at the end of the period Pard 1.21 Our financial posriion is entirely diclated by our ability to raise fijnds and. where w8 have been able to. to receive money for the pods from oth8r organisations who have been able to fund the pods for their parttcular purposes. We feel confidenl that our expenditure has been spent wisely wFth negotiated diswunts from suppliers and we have maintained the financial stability requir8d to enable us to achieve oals that we set for ourselvos. As w8 evolve we will continue to monitor the need for this in thè future however at this time du8 to our siz& and structure all ose that are making decisions on larg6 spend will do so in a planned monthly meeting or and where necessary al an ad- hoc meeting set up for the purpose. Details of fund materially in defial Explanalion of any uncertaintles about the charity continuing as a going con Para 124 WA PJa 123 There is no uncerlainty about the charity continuing its. activtties as a going concern. The charity conducts ils operation in a linear fashion atKI as such we are able to receive regular feedback on how our Sleep Pod one person emergency shelter is being received. The feedback is posittve and the need continu&s to exist. Additional inforniatlon (optional) You ma choos8 to include fvrther statements wh8re reievant about.. Th& ¢hariVs princlpal sources of funds (induding any fundraising) Our primary source of income is fundraising and our activities includ8 approaching and working with foundations and tru51's. We have also successfully campaigned for financial support from public wilh our on-line campaigns. Along with the above we also providè corporate builds as a Servi to companles that want to demonstrate their Corporate Socyal Res onsibil- to their staff and Para 1.47 33437439 1
business netwo. This is a service we charge for with all additional funds going back into the Gharity. Also. vthere appropriate some of our sleep Pod distribution partners will pay (in full or in part) for U)e Sleep Pods that they Gollect or hav6 delivered and then they distribute. NIA Investment policy and objectives including any social investment policy adopted Para 1.46 Th8 ultimate rfsk faang the charity is that ther8 is no longer a need for an emergency shelter. that there are no longer any rough sleèpers in the UK or beyond. That any and all refugees and displaced people are afforded acCmm0dat10n whilsl in transit and do not face enforced nighls without adequate protection. A description of th8 principal rtsks facing th8 charty Para 1.46 Then there Vuld be no need for Sleop Pod chartty to exist. Clearly this is our aim as a charity so happily the main risk we face is also a prinpaI aim of the charty. Apartfrom this there is a risk that one or more of the trustees was lo leave then there would b8 a potential knowledge vacuum. We are mitigating against Ihis risk by mpl11ng policies and procedures as well as utilising a CRM as a database that can be accessed by all team meelings. As well as this we only have one manufacturer of our Gor8 material. They manufacturg our order specifically lo our needs and at the time ofwriting are the only supplier able to do this (from our enquiries) If they decided notto support us then this would be a risk to our operations. A key risk remains our ability to raise SLrffiGient funds to fund our activity. Awar& of this we have sought the help of a fund raising consullanl who has helped us creat8 a plan which we are now working towards. Lastly is the enNironmental risk. We are acutely aware of the impact our pods are maki to land fill. We do not consider this 33437439 1
to be suslainable long t6m7. INe are ther8lore Iwking at options to reverse engineer elements of the pods lo make that more sustainable. Wo are in discussions wlh various material exwrts who may be able lo support this actimty, alongside nv8rsations with one of our ongoing financial supporters (a trust) who are interested in ndIng Ihis activity.
