Havlng previously secured a capital grant from the Hackney Counci18 'H8ckney Community Fund, and the GLA earfier in the year, we were pleased lo receive funding from the Clothworkers, Foundation, which enabled us secure the amount needed lo begin the bullding work on re4eveloping the under-croft ol St Thomas, church. Through our leadarship working wlh St Thomas, 8nd Art8Facl, our architects as well as with loc81 partner5, including the council, and lunders enabled us lo make our vision a reallty and create a Bonslellation of spaces in Ihe undèrcroft and r8new a vlbranl home for the local communlty. In November 2023 we launched the nawly refurbished space with 8 civic and community evenl18d by the Mayor of H8ckney 8nd Included a broad representation of guests, including leaders from the Jewish Orthodox communlly, community partners, funders and repregentalives of the Diocese of Stepney And loc81 neighbours. As we opened the buildlng, our Community 8uilder played a lead role in 8no8ging groups and IndSvidu81$ In the new space, developing a progr8mme of aclivllies that llected need in the neighbourhood. To ènsurè that The Common Rooms reflocled local need and was embedded In tha lived 8xp8riences ol those who are Involved, we eslabllshed a steering group called the 'Comrnon8 Collectlve,. People were invited lo attend from range of backgroun(19 and experiences to ensure the project remoined relevant and contlnued lo reflect local realilles and that any ongoing developments Were ctrproduced. We also r8n an open evening to bring 8 wider variety of guests, volunteers, partners and wlder stakeholders together into our Common Rooms spaee lo ensure that there is local ownership of the project. He has learning disabilities and Ilves In 'sheltered housing, which is Provided by a housing aSSOCAalion but wasn't effeclively responding lo his needs. He was socially Isolated, clearly not able lo look after himself very well and unable lo advocal8 for himsell on the issues that he was lacin9 wllh his housing. Pate worked wlth both our team of volunleers and our communlty buSkJer lo Idenlty how w8 could properly support him. At the sarne lirne he became 8 regular allendee at the Warm Welcome, enjoying the weekly communlty meal as well as the various activities and programmes that were provlded. Over the weeks we began lo see on improvement in hls confidence and his mental health. While hg continued to $twggle during the week and remained very isolated, the Warm Welcome beeame a safe Space lor him where he could meet olher people, build relationships and b8gln lo engage in find ways lo addsS some of the issu•s (hat ho was facing. After about six months, Pete was a regular attendee tu the Warm Welcome and he expressed an intarest in helping out with some ol the food preparalion and washing up. He bggan gotbng invofved in supporting a few la5ks alongside a couple ol voluntgers that he trusted. Following a few weeks, he decided that he would like to loin the volijnleer team, get some training 50 that he couldlgam new skills and further build up hls confldence. She took alaod on the self. advocacy workshops and Is enrolled in further leadership training. Batya's Story.. After transitioning from temporary accommodalon lo prlvale rental. Balya faces seveie damp and mould in her flat bul fears reporting 11 due to the risk of eviction. Allhough hesltanl to C8mpalgn publicly, she has been inslrumental In org8nising workshops. Muna'y St¢ry.' Muna. a social housing tenant, deals with antisocial behavlour and overcrowdlng in her home. Though unable lo attend workshops due lo Ilmlng, she remains in close wntad with the Tenants, Club and is eager lo participate in future initiatsves.
