## **Achievements and Performance**

||||
|---|---|---|
||SORP reference||
|Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.|Para 1.20|'Over this last year 'Mary’s Child' has responded to
the needs of our communities in this very difficult
time of a pandemic. Our relationships in the
community and with local councils have enabled the
charity to respond to the needs as they arose, and as
the community and councils etc requested.
The pandemic has caused such financial pressure on
so many families. As would be expected the primary
need has been for food for people who have
found themselves isolating, ill, furloughed or
redundant. Our main referrals have come through
the local councils, Social Services, Early
Years/Early Help and local schools as well as
individuals, in both Dartford and
Peterborough. Hundreds of food parcels,
containing fresh and
tinned/dried food have been delivered and
many people have needed ongoing support as they
found themselves in great need. This is still
continuing.
As well as food we have had many requests for
baby items such as nappies, baby wipes and baby
food, gas and electricity, blankets for those who
were finding it hard to heat their homes,
cleaning products, toiletries and clothes.|

Due to Covid restrictions much of the food has had to be delivered rather than collected. We have been unable to deliver furniture but have bought new beds and mattresses when required. Additionally, we have been called upon for legal advice as people needed to claim new benefits or found themselves in difficulties with housing or relationships issues. This support has considerably reduced the stress of those who needed clarity and information, helping them personally and saving a great deal money for the local authorities. The impact is a reduction in stress, improvement in self-worth and developing greater independence. The impact of the charity overall has been to relieve individual and family ‘immediate' poverty, particularly food poverty. The ‘wrap around’ care, listening ear, general and legal support we have provided has reduced peoples' sense of isolation and depression. As a result of this support we are now planning to run support groups when conditions allow. A further impact has been on ‘Holiday Hunger’, as we have provided food parcels for families in need over the major school holidays. Christmas presents were provided alongside food to struggling children, families and individuals to ensure that they did not suffer at this special time of year. Mary’s Child charity is in conversation with local councils and other voluntary and charitable organisations to help us all understand more deeply the underlying issues causing poverty, and in this way we hope to work with others to influence change. We have particular concern for causes of food poverty and the effect on the development of children when they do not have a nutritious diet.' Rev Carol R Avery
