Objectives and Activities of the Burma Skincare Initiative

Overview

The Burma Skincare Initiative (BSI) is a small charity, founded in 2020, that has as its overarching mission the promotion of skincare excellence for the people of Burma (Myanmar). A particular focus is on skincare provision to the disadvantaged people of Burma. It is an active and sustainable collaboration between dermatologists and dermatology nurses based predominantly in the UK with their colleagues in Burma. The BSI’s strategy is founded on the three pillars of: education, research and clinical care articulated via a 10-year strategic plan focused on short, medium and long-term goals.

Objectives and Activities of the BSI

The BSI has the following objectives:

Short-term:

To run an inaugural BSI dermatology meeting in Yangon, Burma (Myanmar). Establish travel and exchange fellowships for doctors and nurses and virtual case conferences. To set up research studies on diagnosis and management of mycetoma. To establish a fully functional website for the charity.

Medium-term:

To provide regular BSI meetings and training in diagnosis and management of skin disease by community nurses and healthcare workers in township hospitals with aid of educational videos and teledermatology. To design and run a skin disease survey in Burma and to establish a diagnostics service for immune-bullous diseases. To work with colleagues to establish rural skincare clinics.

Long-term:

To establish a regional dermatology training and research centre in Burma

Achievements and Performance

In the reporting year from inception of the charity on 3 January 2020 to 31 March 2021 the BSI attained some important objectives from its short-term strategic goals.

As one of the optimistic first steps in achieving the BSI goals, it was proposed to hold annual BSI educational meetings as a platform for Myanmar and international dermatology communities to exchange knowledge and experience on the management of, and the latest research in, common and rare skin diseases for mutual benefit. Furthermore, networking opportunities would enable local and international dermatologists to work together to conduct crucial research such as understanding the prevalence of skin disease in Myanmar and to address the long-term sustainable goals of the BSI. These meetings could be realised by collaboration with partners from industry and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), such as Medical Action Myanmar.

An immense international effort and overwhelming enthusiasm from UK dermatologists and dermatology nurses and crucial buy-in from the Myanmar medical and nursing communities, supported by the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), British Dermatological Nursing Group (BDNG), and the three dermatology centres in Myanmar, the BSI organised

3

the first international dermatology meeting in Yangon, Myanmar on 21 24 February 2020 (www.bsi2020.com). The meeting was attended by more than 70 nurses and 200 dermatologists, General Practitioners and physicians from across Myanmar, and was a resounding success, academically, socially and culturally. The first day of the meeting was devoted to dermatology nursing whilst the second and third days – the main meeting - were developed specifically for Myanmar dermatologists, consisting of plenary lectures by eminent international speakers from the UK and Germany, important presentations by Myanmar dermatologists, and oral and poster presentations by Myanmar and UK dermatology trainees. The day after the meeting was devoted to a roundtable of stakeholders in skincare in Burma including nurses and dermatologists from the UK and Burma and representatives of the Tropical Health Education Trust and the Royal College of Physicians (London). This enabled a firming up of the charity’s strategic plan.

Other key achievements in the reporting year included the establishment of two fellowships for dermatologists from Burma to attend (virtually) the meetings of the International Society for Atopic Dermatitis and the British Society for Paediatric Dermatology. We are most grateful to these organisations for their support of the BSI.

Inevitably, two factors limited any significant achievements in the reporting period namely Covid-19 (see below) and the military coup in Burma that occurred on 1 February 2021

Covid-19 statement

The spread of Covid-19 into Burma in late February 2020 curtailed any on the ground activities by the BSI team. During the time that dermatologists in Burma were able to continue daily practice, we were in active communication with them in 2020.
