## **3. Chair’s Report - Ann Feloy**

Welcome everyone to our first AGM as Olly’s Future charity. It’s a really proud moment for me but also a very emotional and heartfelt one. Proud because we have achieved so much together and emotional because we know we would give anything for Oliver to be here with us today, with his warmth, laughter, kindness and joy filling the room.

Instead we are here in love and friendship, doing incredible work in Oliver’s memory while he pulls all the strings. I truly believe the training and the initiatives we have developed and deliver every week are saving lives and helping to change the culture of mental health in this country.

2

Our last AGM was as a society in September 2019. A few months later, we became a Charitable Incorporated Charity on January 2[nd] , 2020. Our application to the Charity Commission was approved in record time – less than a week – thanks to London-based solicitors Bates Wells Braithwaite acting pro bono. Anjelica Barbe was instrumental in making the connection.

Who would have guessed that all the meetings we held subsequently, bar one, were to be via Zoom? It is a testament to our commitment to Olly’s Future, that our bonds have grown even stronger, despite not being able to meet up in person at our base at Uncommon, 1 Long Lane, Borough, London. I very much hope we will be able to return to meeting there soon.

So, has 2020 been good for Olly’s Future in terms of our aims of suicide prevention and celebration/well-being through the arts, reflected in the work of our two committees. Our charity year mirrors the calendar year, so I hope you will indulge me to take us through the months chronologically, picking out some highlights, to see how we have fared.

In January we held our one and only ‘in person’ fundraising event - the Sea Shanty Festival at Shoreham - where Charlie Thompson and I told a very large audience about our work and Oliver.

In February, suicide prevention trainer Rose Allett and myself were able to deliver our one and only ‘face to face’ suicide prevention training we co-created, then called ‘Pressure of Success’, to rugby players at Cambridge University, arranged by Callum Slatter who has since come on board as part of the steering group.

We were all deeply disappointed when, just a week before our annual ‘Olly’s Love and Light Party’ on March 21[st] , the country went into lockdown leading to the event being postponed and then cancelled. The hard work of the Celebration committee (Hannah Wood, Olivia Buckland, Claudia Spellman, Rory Keddie, Charlie Thomson and Werwin Carlos) cannot be underestimated but still around £2,500 was raised through the donation of the non-refunded ticket sales. A success but not as we had imagined. And, in an ingenious twist, money was raised for Olly’s Future via a virtual festival in August – The Great Connection Festival – which Rory was instrumental in organising with The Plight Club.

It was literally a breath of fresh air, when in September we came together for our Olly’s Walk at Christ’s Hospital and met up with the friends we hadn’t seen in person all year. One of the reasons for becoming an ASIST trainer and wanting to develop a 90-minute session to equip people with the skills to ask about suicide, was because I wish I’d known how to help Oliver when he needed it most. Rose and I were determined to find a way to deliver our training via Zoom and started to deliver the newly named ‘Talking about Suicide – Ten Tools’ on line in May. Oskar Schortz and Callum Slatter helped with technical support during those spring and summer months, so that we were able to develop and refine the training to the level it is today.

3

Since then we have delivered this training to over 1,500 people, aged 18 and over, in organisations ranging from the YMCA, the Worshipful Company of World Traders, The Compassionate Friends, Fluxx, teachers, NHS workers and students.

As part of the TAS10 training we play ‘Life Saving Conversations’, which make up an audio bank of co-produced, scripted conversations, recorded by actors, to demonstrate how these conversations might run. The development of these received over £7,000 in funding from the Sussex Health and Social Care Partnership and I was able to put to use my script writing skills to help others.

The delivery and bookings of TAS10 now comes under TAS10 Ltd, set up by Rose and myself. We have built up a team of trainers, as well as emotional and technical support personnel. Otis Kirby-Dunkley is now one of our main trainers, and has delivered more than 24 TAS10s to first year medical students. I think Oliver would be greatly proud of his friend. Oliver and Olly’s Future is at the very heart of this training all donations from participants go directly to our charity.

Dr SAMS (Suicide Awareness in Medical Students) incorporates the TAS10 training, and two other initiatives Olly’s Future has developed, namely hour-long self-reflective Care _Spaces_ and the incredibly powerful MENtal Health Open Mic Nights, which have been run every year by Ayesha Begum at UCL.

The Dr SAMS trio of suicide prevention and wellbeing initiatives received £20,000 from the BMA Giving fund in June, to be delivered at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School during the 2020/21 academic year. Oskar and I wrote that initial bid and have just submitted a second bid for £38,000 to scale up this initiative to three more medical schools to support the doctors of tomorrow so that they can better help their future patients.

Olly’s Future takes part in the week-long BMA International Conference of Physician Health in March. Lauriance Mortier, our newly appointed Programmes and Communications Officer, and I will attend to promote Dr SAMS to leading clinicians from all round the world.

We will also be promoting Practise Hope, the primary care initiative to help 10 – 25 year olds who have thoughts of suicide or self-harm. As Patients Carer Lead for the initial pilot which was funded by Health Education England, I co-created the initiative and since October, Olly’s Future is delivering this directly to NHS Trusts.

Again, because of Covid-19 restrictions, the initiative has come on leaps and bounds with all surveys and training sessions being delivered on line. Our digital manual is down to the expertise of our new member of staff, Laur.

4

As you know, I have been campaigning for a change in NICE guidelines to ensure that doctors do not prescribe anti-depressants to first time patients over the phone, as in Oliver’s case, so Practise Hope is a grassroots way of ensuring GPs improve their knowledge and skills when talking to young people.

Fortunately, Our annual **UCL Oliver Hare Altruism Award** and the **Oliver Hare Cup** at Christ’s Hospital School were able to be awarded virtually to the winners.

Our main focus is to prevent young suicide, particularly in transitional periods in their lives: from leaving school to entering further or higher education, from moving from education into the workplace and from going from family support networks to new homes and independence. This is the area in which we believe we can add the most value, and where our core as an organisation lies. We continue to be affiliated to the National Suicide Prevention Alliance, the SASP and I am also on the board of the Zero Suicide Alliance which is proud that more than 1,600,000 people have undergone its on-line automated training in suicide prevention.

Our 2021-24 strategy was written during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. We are acutely aware that our work in saving precious young lives from suicide and promoting well-being through the arts is more important than ever. We are particularly concerned about the consequences on young people, whose mental health is suffering as a result of the pandemic. The Black Lives Matter protests also proved a catalyst in looking at our own organisation and a small team worked hard to create a Diversity and Inclusion Policy, included in our strategy.

## **Going Forward**

We will continue our vital work in suicide prevention by increasing the reach of our three flagship initiatives. Our vision is that

- every GP surgery runs Practise Hope,

- every medical student attends Dr SAMS and

- someone in every neighbourhood and community is equipped with the skills to help someone thinking of suicide by having attended our ‘Talking about Suicide - Ten Tools’ training.

It’s a bold and ambitious vision but only in taking practical steps can we no longer live in a society where thousands of people take their lives every year.

We cannot predict what the true impact of the coronavirus will be on the long term mental health of young people. However, Olly’s Future is committed to doing all that we can to stop amazing young people losing their lives to suicide.

5

And where celebration and wellbeing initiatives are concerned, we will also continue to run our wonderful awards, events and activities that celebrate Oliver and keep him at the heart of all we do.

In many respects, the next three years will be a time to consolidate all the hard work that has gone into creating this lasting legacy for Oliver. Working more with partners and increasing our fundraising and visibility in the public eye will be important steps to develop now, to ensure our work gains greater support and recognition.

I am enormously proud of all that has been achieved and am grateful to so many of Oliver’s friends for being on this journey with me.

Oliver lives on in our hearts and will never be forgotten as long as we are here. Thanks to everyone here for playing their part.

**Ann Feloy Chair - Olly’s Future.**

## **4. Adoption of Annual Report**

The Chair’s report was proposed by Rory Keddie and seconded by Chris Hare and agreed unanimously.

## **5. Treasurer's Report - Samuel Hare**

The treasurer presented the annual financial report as follows:

Samuel said that the accounts confirm the above in more detail. Other costs represent the running costs of Olly’s Future, including insurance, Google Drive etc.

Current Balance at the time of the AGM is **£35,682.00**

Income pending for Practise Hope.

Warwickshire and Coventry NHS Trust = **£8,500.10**

South West London NHS Trust = **£7,400.00**

We have also applied for a BMA bid for Dr SAMS of **£38,000.00** and will know this outcome by July.

Samuel said that if the grants and income continue to be bigger than salaries it will hold Olly’s Future in a great position. He said we continued to receive constant donations and these come through our website donation platform Stripe.

Ann said that donations also came in from participants who attended ‘Talking About Suicide: Ten Tools’, however, these are small donations - £5, £10, £20 etc.

8

## **Next Steps**

- Increase fundraising activities and continue to write funding bids

- Look at donations platforms such as Local Giving

- Engage professional expertise to assist with major events, such as a one off A/B lister gig at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill.

- Engage more staff to help with the fundraising process

## 8. **'Soft' launch of Olly's Future Three Year Strategy**

Ann gave a brief introduction and walkthrough of the strategy which was created over at least six months with contributions from everyone on the steering group. She said it consolidated more than three years’ growth since forming Olly’s Future and it reflected the huge amount of work achieved.

The ‘Communications’ policy and the ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ policy are appendices to the main strategy. Charlie complimented the design of the document and said he really appreciated how easy it was to read.

Nick suggested requesting testimonials from award-winners, doctors, medical students and others involved in the initiatives.

Zeph said he was really happy with the strategy and suggested it could be shared on the Olly’s Future website along with a link to the annual financial report. He suggested that setting out, in general terms, what the charity plans to do with the income helps supporters understand our work and our projections. The key message is that our finances are managed well, consciously and with donations being used wisely, such as for well-being events or donations to smaller charities that relate to our aligned beliefs.

One example, Chris put forward, was for the route of **Olly’s Walk** around Christ’s Hospital in September to be made into a designated trail with a leaflet and good ‘all-weather’ signs

10

in Oliver’s memory. This would get people out into the countryside for their well-being. Olly’s Future branding would be on the signs as a reminder of the efforts taken by the charity. If Olly’s Future were to put in perhaps £2,000 towards the ‘all-weather’ signs the Heritage Lottery Fund would be more inclined to fund this project.

A ‘Love and Light’ garden could be incorporated into the walk where someone could donate some of their land to be a part of the trail.

## **Action:**

Sam and Zeph to review the financial sections of the strategy.

All to review and send in comments by May 1st. Strategy to be agreed at the next steering group meeting in June.

Ann to send off financial accounts and AGM minutes to the Charity Commission.

Request testimonials from doctors, medical students and award-winners to include in the strategy

## **Steering Group Survey**

Ann had put together a survey which was shared on-line in the chat during the meeting and ten minutes was given for people to complete it. Ann stated that everyone will be able to access the feedback from the survey.

## **AOB**

Steve Wealthy and Saml to join Ann on Monday, 12th April for a meeting with the accountants.

## **Next AGM meeting**

7th April, 2022
