## **`OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES`** 

## **`Purpose and Aims`**

TheCharity'spurposesaretoprovideandadministersuchreliefandaidforpatientsat,orwhohavebeendischargedfrom, the
Royal LondonHospital(RLH),that does not fall withinthe scopeof the NationalHealthService.The aim of the Charityis to continue
torenderassistance,directlyandindirectly,toasmanysuchpatientsaspossibleandthustofurtheritscharitablepurposesfor the
public benefit.

## **`Ensuring our work delivers this aim`**

TheTrusteesregularlyreviewthisaimandtheoutcomesoftheCharity'sactivity,assessingtheprogressofeachactivityand the
benefitsprovidedtothegroupsandindividualsbeinghelped.SuchreviewsenabletheTrusteestobesatisfiedthatthe various
activitiesremainfocussedonthestatedpurposesoftheCharity.DuenotehasbeentakenoftheCharityCommission's general
guidance on public benefit in these reviews and in planning future  activities.
```

Such futureactivitieswill usuallyinvolvethe makingof grantsto other local organisationsthat renderassistance,directlyor  indirectly,
topatientsoftheRLH.TheTrusteeswillonlysanctionsuchgrantsifadequateinformationisobtainedwhenconsidering grant
requests and that appropriate reporting will be provided subsequent to a grant being made.

## **`ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE`**

All of the Society'scharitableactivitiesfocuson providingcareand support,directlyand indirectly,for patientsat, or who have been
dischargedfrom,the RLH, and that is deemedto be outsidethe scopeof the NationalHealthService.This includestangible support
forindividualsorforgroupsofpatients,orbywayofgrantstolocalorganisationsthatprovidecareforthem.Grantsarealso made
from time to time to support developments in clinical care that directly benefit patients.
```

Asindicatedinlastyear'sreport,themuch-valuedfacilitiesatJamesHoraHomehadtobewithdrawninNovember2024,due to
safety-relatedissues.However,theSocietycontinuedtoprovidefunding(atthepreviousrateof£80,000perannum)tothe RLH
through 2025 to enable self-caring patients and relatives of patients to stay within the RLH overnight where possible.
```

On a similartheme,the Societymadea furthergrantin 2025to the Sick Children'sTrust(SCT),amountingto £50,000,to assist the
fundingofStevensonHouseinWhitechapel.Thisisavaluablefacilitythatprovidesovernightanddaytimeaccommodation for
families where a child is currently a patient in RLH.
```

The'RoutestoRoots'project(R2R),operatedbyProvidenceRow(PR)inliaisonwiththeHospitalPathwaysTeamat RLH,
continuedto carryoutitsvaluableroleto prevent,as faras possible,homelesspatientsof theRLHbeingdischargedbackonto the
streetsof London.The projectalsoservesto reducere-admissionratesto the RLH.The Societymakesa grantto PR to fund some
ofthestaffingcostsoftheproject,anditsTrusteesreceivehalf-yearlyreportssettingoutnumbersofpatientsreceiving assistance
andsample(anonymous)casestudies.Thefinaltrancheofthe3-yearagreementfrom1stApril2023wasgrantedin 2025,
amountingto£93,771,supplementedbyafurther£2,657tocovertheincreaseinNationalInsurancecostsarisingfrom the
November2024Budget.In addition,the sumof £10,000was alsograntedto PR for assistingR2R clientswithminorcoststo assist
withrehabilitationgiventheirlackoffinancialresources.RegularstatementsarereceivedfromPRsettingouttheamounts and
circumstances of the individual payments made to their clients.
```

AnapplicationforafurthergranttoassistthetherapeuticactivitiesoftheChildren'sBrainInjuryTrust(CBIT)withintheRLH was
receivedtogetherwith a reporton its recentactivitywhich is much-valuedby relevantfamilies.A donationof £17,500to CBIT for  that
specific purpose was made during the year.
```

DuringtheyearanewgrantapplicationwasreceivedfromSpitalfieldsCryptTrusttofacilitateaccesstotheservicesofa clinical
psychologistfromNHSEastLondonFoundationTrustwhichassistsvulnerablepatientsoftheRLHonanaddiction recovery
programme. A donation of £8,500 was agreed.
```

grants totalling £76,000 were made to other local organisations who support RLH patients in various ways, as follows:

## **`FINANCIAL REVIEW`**

TheSocietyhassetoutFinancialStatementsinaccordancewiththecurrentStatementofRecommendedPractice(SORP).In the
opinion of the Trustees, there are sufficient funds to permit the Society to operate in the long term.

## **`Reserves Policy`** 

```
At 31st December2025 the Society'sfree reserves(fundsthat are uncommitted)amountedto £16,531,682(2024 - £ 17,349,725), of
which £15,430,111was the value of sharesin the COIF CharitiesInvestmentFund. The decreasein the value of the Society's assets
over the year is the resultof net reductionin the value of its investments,partiallyoffsetby an excessof income,including donations
(withtax reclaimedvia Gift Aid) of £16,218,overcash outgoof £39,541overthatperiod.The Societyreceivesno directfunding and
doesnotcarryoutfundraisingactivities,soreliesonitsinvestmentstoprovideitsincome,althoughtheSocietydoes receive
donations from time to time.
```

InvestmentsformasubstantialpartoftheSociety'sreservesand,asstatedbelow,aremanagedbyanindependent investment
manager.TheTrusteesareresponsibleforsettingtheSociety'sinvestmentpolicyandformonitoringtheperformanceof the
investmentportfolio.Thecurrentpolicyaimstopreservetherealvalueoftheinvestmentsovertimeaswellasgenerating an
appropriatelevelofincomeeachyear.Careistakentoensurethatthereisalwayssufficientliquiditytofundgrants and
administrative expenses for a reasonable period if investment conditions deteriorate significantly.
```

As at 31stDecember2025,£1,446,977was heldas cashor cashequivalents,of which£850,000was investedin the COIF Deposit
Fundmanagedby the investmentmanagers,withthe balancebeingheldin accountswiththe Society'sbank.The Trusteesaim to
holdatleastoneyear'slikelyoutgoincashorcashequivalentstobeabletofundexpenditurewhichmeetstheSociety's objects.
The amountheldat the year-endsignificantlyexceededthistarget,largelydue to the Trusteesuncertaintyaboutoutgoover2026 in
the light of the closure of the James Hora Home facility in Ashfield Street, Whitechapel.
```

## **`Investment Policy`** 

```
TheSociety'snewconstitutionasaCharitableIncorporatedOrganisation(CIO)authorisestheTrusteestomakeand alter
investmentsusing the CommonInvestmentFund of the CIO. Throughoutthe year, the investmentshave consistedof incomeunits in
the Charities Investment Fund (CIF) and the Charities Deposit Fund (CDF) managed by CCLA.
```

TheobjectivessetbyCCLAforCIFaretoprovideatotalreturn(growthincapitalandincome)overthelongterm(definedas 5
years).TheCIF'slong-termperformancecanbeassessedbyreferringtothetargetbenchmarkoftheconsumerpriceindex plus
5%pa(beforethedeductionofcostsandcharges).TheCIFusesa'totalreturn'approachtoinvesting,whichmeansthat,for the
incomeunits,somepartoftheincomedistributionmaybepaidfromcapitalifthereisnotenoughincomefromthe underlying
investments.The currentforecastincomeyield is such that the Society'sTrusteesexpectthat the annualincomegenerated currently
should be around £460,000.
```

In2025,theCIFdistributed£452,740totheSociety,whichwas2.9%oftheSociety'saverageinvestmentintheCIF.In addition,
includingfeerebates,thevalueinvestedintheCIFdeclinedby4.7%,producingatotalreturnovertheyearofaround-1.8%. In
2024thereturnontheinvestmentportfoliowasestimatedas5.1%.Theannualisedreturnontheinvestmentportfoliooverthe 5
yearsto31stDecember2025wasthereforec.3.5%,(c.3.6%forthe3 yearperiod).Thisissomewhatbelowtheannualisedrate of
inflation(CPI)plus3%paoverthoseperiods(viz7.9%and7.4%respectively),whichtheTrusteesregardasappropriate targets
over the medium term so as to preserve the real value of the portfolio over time (assuming no drawdown of capital).
```

TheSocietyis a CharitableIncorporatedOrganisation(CIO),havingpreviouslyoperatedformanyyearsasa CharitableTrust (CT)
untilthechangeofstatusinDecember2019.TheSocietycurrentlyhas7Trustees,whoeitherhaveextensiveknowledge and
experienceofthehealthandsocialcaresectors,particularlyinEastLondon,orpossessexpertiseinfinancialand investment
matters or of the legal and regulatory environment for charities.

A formalmeetingof Trusteeswas held on 30th June 2025 to approvethe Society'sReportand Accountsfor 2024. Trusteesalso met
duringtheyearon17thMarchand20thOctobertoreceivereportsfromorganisationsinreceiptofgrantsduringthatyearand to
considerfurthergrantapplicationsfor2025-26aswellastoconsider(interalia)theSociety'sfinancialposition (including
investments),thesituationregardingJamesHoraHomeandparticularneedsarisingwithinandaroundtheRLH,itsstaff and
patients.

Trusteesforafurtherthree-yearterm.AlisonKnappretiredasaTrusteewitheffectfrom15thDecember2025,havingserved the
Societyformanyyearsas a valuedmemberof itsManagementCommitteepriorto December2019andsubsequentlyas a Trustee
of the CIO; her intimateknowledgeof the work of the RLH and encouragementof the contributionthis Charitymakes has been much
appreciated.

TheSocietyenteredintoanagreementwithBartsandTheLondonNHSTrustregardingJamesHoraHomein February
2003 to contribute£80,000per annum for at least 20 years towardsits runningcosts.The NHS Trust had a lease agreement
onthepropertythatexpiredinMarch2026,andhadagreedtopermittheSocietytocontinueutilisingJamesHora Home
until then in returnfor their contributiontowardscosts.However,JamesHora Home was closedon October30, 2024, due to
safetyreasons.Nevertheless,theSocietycontinuedtomakeanannualgrantof£80,000untilMarch2026toBarts Health
NHS Trust towards the provision of overnight accommodation  in RLH for relatives of patients.
