Malvern Hills Riding for the Disabled is a small group, we hire the ponies and hold the riding sessions at Guinness Park Farm, for children from Regency High School Worcester. Riders are accompanied by teachers and outdoor activities staff.
The benefits of riding.
Horse riding is a non-weight bearing activity which can benefit riders with autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, development delay, Down’s syndrome, learning disabilities.
There are physical benefits from therapeutic riding the warmth and three-dimensional movement of the horse are transmitted through the rider’s body, gradually making them more relaxed and supple strengthening core stability, and allowing improved balance, posture and co-ordination.
Riding can also have strong recreational and psychological benefits, freedom of movement, increased confidence and self-esteem. Benefit in their general health and well-being.
Malvern Hills RDA experienced coach Amanda follow’s a training programme managed and assessed by RDA head office. Amanda measures and charts riders progress and sets goals and targets.
Experience helpers help with the ponies and riders under the guidance of the coach. Volunteers are committed and trained and are DBS checked.
As a group we raise funds by doing bucket collections at local stores and at Worcester Racecourse. In 2020/21 we benefitted from the Co-operative Grant Scheme, Tesco’s Token Scheme and individual donations.
Teachers and Parents report the benefit to the children. The Trustee’s and volunteers are delighted to received handmade cards and thank you letters from the children.
At the end of school terms we recognise the child’s achievements by having an award ceremony where they receive Endeavour certificates and rosettes.
