## **Run Breckland – 2020 Annual Report** 

## **General** 

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we postponed the events that had already been organized (Breckland Forest Marathon and Half Marathon, scheduled to take place on 26 April 2020, and the Thetford 5K Easter Bunny Run, scheduled for 5 April 2020) until 2021, and did not organize any other events for 2020.  However, to try to keep people outdoors and running we organized virtual running events in return for medals. 

## **Income** 

It was hoped that the Breckland Forest Marathon and Half Marathon, and the Thetford 5K Easter Bunny Run, could both take place in 2021, so many of the participants who had already booked were happy to leave their money with our ticket website to be used for the 2021 events. 

We set the price for the virtual events lower than for “real” events as we did not have to provide any infrastructure, so found that many of the runners who wanted to do a virtual event left their money in for 2021, and paid separately for the 2020 virtual events.  This is evidenced by the 2020 income for events coming directly into the Run Breckland bank account, most of which was paid in by virtual runners who had already booked the “real” event via the website. 

2020 was more about keeping ourselves busy on social media and encouraging people to take part in virtual events.  Some runners were interested in running for “vintage” medals, i.e. left over medals from “real” events that Run Breckland had held in previous years but that those runners had not been able to attend.  A combination of all of this helped us to keep our heads above water in what was to be an inactive year for “real” running events. 

## **Expenditure** 

We lost our deposit for the Marathon/Half Marathon toilet hire (£72), and we had already ordered medals for both events (Marathon and Bunny Run) so stood also to lose money on these.  However, we were able to recoup our costs by offering the virtual running events referred to above.  A virtual event meant that runners had to complete the required distance alone, and use their own route, but, once they submitted evidence that they had successfully completed the distance to Run Breckland via their running apps, we would send them the appropriate medal.  As the Covid restrictions were loosened in the summer, we were able personally to hand the medals over to runners and take photographs to use on our social media, which helped keep the organisation in the public eye, and encourage others to take part. 

There was a bank charge of £7 due to an error, but the bank paid us £40 because of poor customer service.  We transferred monies from the Treasurer’s account into a separate Run Breckland interest bearing account, and back, holding the minimum we needed in the Treasurer’s Account which allowed some interest to be earned.  The interest rate reduced considerably over the year.  The expenditure figure in “Adjustments” includes these transfers, the bank charge and (very little) interest. 

We purchased annual insurance in mid-2019 which was intended to cover the first half of 2020.  The insurance company agreed to put that policy “on hold” until we are able to restart our events (probably in 2021).
