Mission Statement

FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT IN HERNE BAY AND THE SURROUNDING AREA, THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE ARTS OF MUSIC, PERFORMANCE, LITERATURE AND THE VISUAL ARTS AND THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN THE CULTURE AND HERITAGE OF KENT, IN PARTICULAR THROUGH THE PROVISION OF AN ANNUAL FESTIVAL

Summary

In 2021 Herne Bay Festival CIO was awarded £35,000 in grant funding from 2 grant providers. This funding was used to deliver a 4-week summer festival with more than 60 events and activities based around music, our natural environment, local history and community, a 6-week winter music outreach programme into care and residential homes and a programme of family arts and crafts projects.

This year was the first year following the Covid-19 pandemic, when in 2020 our whole programme had been cancelled and we were unable to secure any funding. We were therefore very pleased to be able to offer a full programme for 2021, with the correct procedures in place.

Project Report

In 2021 Herne Bay Festival CIO delivered three main projects for the local community:

A 4-week summer festival

A 6-week music outreach programme in care and residential homes

A programme of family arts and craft workshops

Summer Festival

Our summer festival is held during the summer holidays, providing families with many days of events and activities aimed at entertaining and educating all ages.

In 2021 the festival included a wide variety of events and activities from Picnics In The Park to Coastal Art Path Projects to Cartoon Festivals and Exhibitions.

There was a strong emphasis on the community learning about Herne Bay's history, it's coastal paths and the seashore with educational walks, talks and workshops held throughout the entire festival.

More than 60 activities and events took place over the month of August and was a welcome return to some sense of normality for those that had struggled through the pandemic.

Attendance at our events and activities varied according to the type of event but ranged from 12 people to in excess of 6,000. Some of our events provided the opportunity for local businesses to showcase their offerings and for local organisations to demonstrate their areas of expertise.

It was during this year that we started to consider our themes for 2022, based on what we felt motivated our local community and how best we felt we could serve their needs. The festival was generously grant funded by Canterbury City Council and it is estimated that more than 15,000 participated.

Winter Outreach Programme

Our winter outreach programme commenced in November through to December and focussed on reaching out to our local care and residential homes to provide entertainment and enrichment for those still unable to get out and about and enjoy the summer events due to the pandemic. This proved very popular and is something we will definitely look to provide in future years. The support from both Canterbury City Council and The Crown Charitable Fund enabled this entire project to be delivered. It is estimated that nearly 1,000 people benefitted from this programme.

Family Arts and Crafts Programme

We partnered with Beach Creative for this programme and our objective was to reach out to those families that may not necessarily have been able to access these arts and crafts workshops. Beach Creative connected with families and provided the support needed to deliver this.

The programme had a Christmas theme and we were very pleased to be able to include this for 2021. This project was funded by The Crown Charitable Fund and supported more than 80 people.

Looking Forward to 2022

During 2021 we looked at what motivated our local community and which events we felt benefitted the most people. From this point we chose the following themes:

Try Something New Mental Health and Wellbeing Understanding Our Local Environment

Try Something New

This theme was from direct community feedback, where there was a desire to try something different that may not necessarily be available in the immediate local area, but could be if funding was available.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

Following the pandemic, we have noticed an uptake in people talking online about their mental health and wellbeing, how the last two years has affected them and what support they need to move forward.

Understanding Our Local Environment

This theme is a continuation of our 2021 offering, with an increased awareness and interest in our local environment, what our coast offers, how people can benefit from the edible fruits and vegetables available on the coastal path, how to grow food for your family and how to create areas of interest for the local community.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31 / 03 / 2022 .
Responsibilities and As the charity trustees of the Trust, you are responsible for the preparation basis of report of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have examiner's statement come to my attention (other than that disclosed below *) in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
