provide support and to provide pulmonary
rehabilitation exercise maintenance
sessions for people diagnosed with a lung
disease at 5 locations across East Sussex.
We currently have almost 80 people in
regular exercise weekly. This has a very
positive impact on the physical welfare and
mental wellbeing of participants, and it
serves to keep people out of hospital. It
also provides a space where participants
can socialise. The demand for our
sessions has increased enormously as
clients are referred to us by the NHS to us
daily. Having our own premises, which
includes a fully equipped gymnasium, is a
huge benefit and enables us to expand
without the pressure to seek out suitable
premises. The charity is volunteer led
organisation and we encourage peer
support by providing a safe environment
where our service users can meet and
socialise without fear or prejudice.
The charity works very closely with East
Sussex County Council and with East
Sussex Health Care Trust to deliver its
services.
We also had an agreement with the
Physiotherapy Department at the University
of Brighton whereby students on a PhD
course assisted in providing pulmonary
rehabilitation exercise. This enables the
students to complete certain modules
within their degree courses, to understand
pulmonary disease by working directly with
patients and help our members during their
exercise sessions.
Our chairperson sits on a British Lung
Foundation (BLF) for Rehabilitation and
Diagnosis Panel and on the Clinical
Commissioning Group for the local Health
