Anna York-Weaving acts as Chair. The Trustee Committee consists of a Cambridge graduate, three lecturers and fellows at Cambridge University and one parent with business, marketing, and senior administrative skills. Trustee policies and procedures are to be updated after the pandemic. CGCI's coaching team is led by Anna York-Weaving who has previously represented female chess at Cambridge University, Internationally and within the UK. She is supported by Ian Wallace. The charity has links with the English Chess Federation (ECF) and the team organising the Cambridge Chess Championships (CCC), plus many of the colleges at Cambridge University. Communication extends to the local and surrounding schools in Cambridgeshire. - trustees’ consideration of major risks and the system and procedures to manage them. **CGCI – Trustees’ Annual Report 2021-2022** May 2023 2 ## **Section C Objectives and activities** **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document** **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** The objects of the CIO are: (i) the advancement of education, in particular, but not exclusively, in the fields of science, technology, economics, mathematics and computing; and (ii) the advancement of amateur sport through the provision of, or assistance in the provision of, facilities for the teaching, coaching and playing of chess for the benefit of girls of school age who are resident in Cambridgeshire. CGCI provides regular monthly chess training workshops for girls aged approximately 5+. Such training workshops, which last between 2 and 2.5 hours, are open during school term-time and are typically attended by between 40-45 girls. CGCI provides three levels of coaching, depending upon ability. CGCI's coaching team is led by Anna York-Weaving. Pre-pandemic CGCI operated a competitive team which participated in the Cambridgeshire Chess Championship (CCC), playing a total of 12 matches throughout the academic year, and separately operates its own annual chess tournament. Post pandemic CGCI;s intention is to establish a competitive team, as before to compete at CCC and will host its own tournament, based at Cambridge Kings College on 2[nd] July 2023. CGCI provides only basic facilities, namely a room in which it meets, and any other items necessary for the playing of chess, such as chess boards, chess pieces and chess clocks. CGCI does not operate on a "membership" basis and is open to all girls in the Cambridgeshire and surrounded areas aged 5+. CGCI actively approaches as many schools in Cambridgeshire and surrounded areas as it can in order to reach and engage with as many girls as possible. CGCI's purposes provide the following benefits: (i) greater female representation in the chess community by increasing the number of girls of school age in the Cambridgeshire and surrounded areas who are actively playing chess. (ii) the intellectual benefits of chess experienced by its beneficiaries, including the development of problem solving, logical and critical reasoning, pattern recognition, concentration, communication skills and interpersonal skills; and (iii) an increase in positive attitudes towards subjects such as science, technology, economics, mathematics, and computing in girls in education. **CGCI – Trustees’ Annual Report 2021-2022** May 2023 3 ## **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)** CGCI raises the majority of its funds by way of public donation. This comprises revenue raised via: (i) crowdfunding (ii) donations from certain colleges of Cambridge University, local business’/organisations. Such crowdfunded donations are made in small individual amounts and without conditions, whereas the donations from Cambridge typically range between £50 to £400. CGCI also occasionally applies for, and receives, grants. You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about: CGCI does not follow any formal policies or procedures in respect of such donations, as each individual donation is made unconditionally and is nonmaterial in respect of CGCI's operations as a whole and would otherwise provide a disproportionate administrative burden upon CGCI's current volunteers. - policy on grantmaking; - policy programme related investment; - contribution made by volunteers. **CGCI – Trustees’ Annual Report 2021-2022** May 2023 4 ## Section D Achievements and performance ## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** Due to the Covid pandemic and following government guidelines, CGCI suspended activity from February 2020 until 22[nd] September 2022. Trustees meet monthly. AGM minutes from 26[th] April 2023 outlined the initiatives strategy from September 2023 to September 2024, including the Cambridge Chess Championships (CCC), a planned CGCI mini tournament for intermediate and advanced players including external participants and the English Primary Schools’ Chess Association (EPSA) under 11’s Championship. CGCI will hold its own tournament on 2[nd] July 2023 open to external participants and will be held at Kings College, Cambridge. Due to lockdown, the CGCI were unable to participate or hold tournaments, therefore, no events were able to take place during the report period 31[th] May 2021 to 30 May 2022. Part of the forthcoming strategy is to produce a yearly newsletter of events for the year 2023/2024, outlining the CGCI’s past achievements, chess news and future tournaments throughout the year. Unfortunately, the outline above does not summarises chess awards or achievements relating to the reporting period, this is due to the pandemic, but does illustrate the charities commitment and the plans in place for the future. **CGCI – Trustees’ Annual Report 2021-2022** May 2023 5 ## **Section E Financial review** Due to the pandemic, accounts were frozen until CGCI resumed post **Brief statement of the** pandemic.
