CROSSING THE GAIN LINE
Annual Report
2024 - 2025
A UK Registered Charity
Working with communities in Myanmar
A Beacon of Unity and Growth
"Crossing the Gain Line," rooted in the UK but with a vibrant heart in Myanmar, continues to champion the spirit of rugby amidst an evolving landscape of challenges. Our charity has been a beacon of resilience, adapting to meet the needs of the whole child and their community with unwavering commitment.
At the core of our mission are the children from Yangon's most impoverished communities — the orphans and the street children, whose lives are narratives of resilience and hope. Our collaboration with partner charities has fortified a network of support, embracing these children, their families, and their communities in a circle of care.
Executive Summary
Overview
The period from March 2024 to February 2025 has been a year of maintenance and building capability for Crossing the Gain Line. As an established INGO in Myanmar, we have continued to focus on our core mission of providing rugby training and youth development programmes to children in Yangon's most disadvantaged communities.
This year has been characterised by steady development and progress. Our four touch rugby groups have
continued to train weekly, providing consistent support and structure for the children who participate in our programmes. The children look forward to each training session, where they not only learn rugby skills but also receive nutritious food after each session.
Achievements and Challenges
In this reporting period, we have maintained our four touch rugby groups, each training weekly with consistent attendance. The programmes continue to provide a safe and supportive environment for children to develop both their rugby skills and their confidence. The addition of food provision after each training session has been particularly valuable in supporting the nutritional needs of these vulnerable children.
The political and economic situation in Myanmar continues to present challenges, but our established presence and strong partnerships have enabled us to maintain operations and continue our vital work with communities in need.
Established INGO Status in Myanmar
Following our official recognition as an International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO) in Myanmar in the previous reporting period, the 2024-2025 year has seen us consolidate our position as an established INGO. This recognition has provided us with enhanced operational capabilities and greater access to resources and partnerships that support our mission.
Our established status has enabled us to maintain and develop our programmes with greater stability and predictability. We have continued to work effectively with local partners and communities, leveraging our INGO status to maximise our impact on the children and families we serve.
The operational efficiencies gained through our INGO status have been particularly valuable during this period of maintenance and development, allowing us to focus our resources on programme delivery rather than administrative processes.
Our Programmes
Touch Rugby Training
Our flagship touch rugby programme continues to be the cornerstone of our work. This year, we have maintained four groups training weekly, providing consistent rugby coaching and youth development activities for children from Yangon's most impoverished communities.
Each training session is eagerly anticipated by the children, who look forward to the opportunity to play, learn and grow in a supportive environment. The weekly structure provides routine and stability, which is particularly important for children who may not have these foundations in their daily lives.
Following each training session, we provide food to all participants. This nutrition support is an essential component of our programme, ensuring that children receive at least one nutritious meal in addition to the physical and educational benefits of participation.
Youth Development
Beyond rugby skills, our programmes focus on the holistic development of each child. Through participation in touch rugby, children develop teamwork, communication, leadership and self-confidence. These life skills are as important as the sporting achievements and provide a foundation for future success.
Our volunteer coaches and staff provide mentorship and positive role modelling, creating a supportive environment where children can thrive. The sense of community and belonging that our programmes foster is evident in the consistent attendance and enthusiastic participation we see each week.
Looking Ahead to 2025-2026
For the upcoming 2025-2026 period, our vision encompasses both the consolidation of our achievements and the exploration of new growth opportunities. Our planned targets are:
-
Continue Programme Development: Building on our foundation, we plan to continue developing our touch rugby programme, maintaining our four groups and exploring opportunities to reach more children in need.
-
Continue Coach Development: Ongoing coach development remains a priority, ensuring our staff remain at the forefront of rugby coaching excellence and youth development.
-
Enhance Equipment and Facilities: We will continue to upgrade our training facilities and equipment, supporting the optimal development of our athletes.
-
Expand Donor Engagement: A strategic focus on expanding our donor base will be crucial, aiming to secure the resources needed to sustain and grow our programmes.
These targets are set with an optimistic outlook towards creating lasting positive change in the lives of children and communities through the power of rugby and education.
