2023 - 2024 Annual Report
Crossing the Gain Line: Nurturing Hope and Resilience
Based in the UK and extending its hands across borders to Myanmar, "Crossing the Gain Line" has steadfastly upheld its mission as a rugby-centric charity amidst the multifaceted challenges of the pandemic and the continuing crisis in Myanmar. This period has seen us evolve beyond our foundational focus, adopting a holistic approach to support not only the children in our program but also the communities that nurture them.
Our Children: Faces of Hope
The children who find a haven in our program are the heartbeats of the poorest quarters of Yangon and its outskirts. They are the orphans, the street wanderers, and the embodiments of resilience, emerging from backgrounds marked by profound vulnerability. In collaboration with allied charities,
we've woven a tapestry of activities and services aimed at uplifting these young lives, providing solace and support to their families and fostering the well-being of their communities. Through the unity of sport and service, we strive to create a haven of hope and opportunity.
Executive Summary
Purpose
"Crossing the Gain Line" stands as a beacon of hope and transformation, leveraging the profound power and values inherent in rugby to uplift individuals from underprivileged communities. Our mission transcends mere sport; it's about inspiring, motivating, and supporting these individuals, offering them unparalleled opportunities for personal growth, education, and social inclusion. Throughout the 2022-2023 period, we were driven by ambitious objectives to broaden our impact: extending our reach into more communities, enriching our educational initiatives, and fortifying our support network for young athletes. Our goal was twofold: to nurture their sporting prowess and to arm them with essential life skills for a thriving future.
Highlights
The year 2022-2023 marked an era of extraordinary accomplishments and expansion for "Crossing the Gain Line." A notable surge in donor contributions fueled our ongoing food program and propelled our online English program to new heights of success. After a hiatus due to the political climate, we joyfully resumed rugby

training, introducing the sport to three new communities. This expansion increased our engagement to four communities overall, and our participant roster swelled by 40%, reaching over 200 young athletes. The online English program, too, continued to flourish, testament to the resilience and dedication of our participants.
A pivotal moment of the year was organizing our first tournament, a celebration of unity and skill, where all the children we coach showcased their rugby talents. This event symbolized the spirit of community and the strides we've made in nurturing young athletes.

A Milestone Achievement: The Impact of Our First Full-Time Operations Manager in Myanmar
2022 was a landmark year for "Crossing the Gain Line," marked by a pivotal enhancement to our operational capabilities in Myanmar. In a strategic move to amplify our impact and streamline program delivery, we appointed our first full-time Operations Manager on the ground. This decision has not only represented a significant step forward in our organizational growth but has also underscored our commitment to the communities we serve.
The introduction of a dedicated Operations Manager has brought about transformative changes to the way we conduct our programs through the CTGL, our operating organization in Myanmar. With an on-the-ground presence, we've managed to bridge the gap between our strategic visions in the UK and the tangible realities of implementing our programs in Myanmar. This alignment has been crucial in navigating the complexities of the local landscape, particularly given the challenges posed by the political situation and the aftermath of the pandemic.
Operational Efficiency and Local Insight
One of the most immediate benefits has been the enhancement of operational efficiency. Our Operations Manager, being deeply ingrained in the local context, has facilitated smoother coordination of activities, quicker decision-making, and more effective communication with both local partners and the communities we support.
4
This has enabled us to be more responsive to the needs on the ground, adapting our
programs in real-time to ensure they deliver the maximum impact.
Strengthening Community Ties
Furthermore, having a full-time representative has significantly strengthened our ties with the local communities. Our Operations Manager serves not just as an administrator but as a bridge, fostering trust and understanding between CTGL and the children, families, and local entities we work with. This enhanced relationship has led to deeper community engagement and participation in our programs, amplifying their effectiveness and reach.
Enhancing Program Delivery
Under the stewardship of our Operations Manager, we've seen notable improvements in the delivery of our flagship programs. From the expansion of the rugby training sessions to include more children and communities, to the streamlined
5
distribution of resources for our food assistance program, every aspect of our operations has benefited from on-site management. This role has been instrumental in ensuring that our educational and vocational training initiatives are tailored to meet the evolving needs of the participants, thereby maximizing their benefits.
Looking Ahead
The positive changes wrought by appointing a full-time Operations Manager are a testament to the value of having dedicated personnel within our operating regions. As CTGL continues to grow and evolve, this role will undoubtedly remain central to our mission of transforming lives through rugby, education, and community support in Myanmar.
As we move forward, the lessons learned and successes achieved through this appointment will guide our approach to expanding our team and enhancing our operations further. The difference made by having our first employee on the Myanmar side of operations has not only exceeded our expectations but has also set a new benchmark for what we can achieve together.
