Crossing the Gain Line Annual Report 2021 - 2022
Introduction
Crossing the Gain Line is a UK charity with operations in Myanmar. Primarily a rugby charity, throughout the pandemic and ongoing crisis in Myanmar, we have developed into a charity that supports the whole child and the communities they live in.
Who are our children
The children in our program come from the poorest communities in Yangon and the surrounding areas, some are orphans, others are street children from desperately vulnerable backgrounds. We collaborate with other charities to provide a range of activities and services for these children, their families and the wider community.
Our programs
Rugby
This is the core of our charity. Early in the year the political situation made it very difficult to coach rugby. As we got to August 2021, things started to settle down and we were able to start coaching. By the end of February 2022 we have grown to having two training sessions per week with our partners Sonne and VCH children's home. This meant about 100 children were receiving rugby coaching per week.
2
Food Assistance
With the onset of the pandemic, our players' families became in desperate need of food. This was coupled with the political unrest meaning food insecurity has been a major concern. Our monthly food donations to our families and their villages has continued. This food assistance primarily takes the form of rice, tinned fish, eggs & cleaning products. It has allowed the families to buy extras such as fresh fruits
and vegetables in the local markets
Online English
The pandemic in Myanmar led us to develop our extra curricula program into an online English program. We have provided a tablet to the orphanage and each week link them up with an English teacher in the UK.
This has been an incredible experience for the children and our English teacher. The plan is to expand this to the other children that we work with.
3
Vocational Training Support
Crossing the Gain Line has links with companies that are looking for young people to join their training programs. For our older children accessing these opportunities is usually impossible, as they lack the funds to attend the interview or clothes to wear. CtGL supports them by providing the onboarding costs, such as transport, lunch money etc. We also help them find sponsorship for the training.
This is a picture of Dee Aung graduating from the Shwe Sa Bwe restaurant hospitality 11 month course that CtGL helped with his onboarding.
Looking forward
In 2023 we hope to maintain and expand our programs with even larger numbers.
Below are just a few of our targets
-
500 children taking part in weekly rugby
-
Food assistance program expanding to accommodate these 500 children's families and communities
-
The Online English program expanded to cover 50% of the children that we coach.
-
The vocation training program to place 30 young people.
How you can help
Crossing the Gain Line is 100% reliant on donations from the public. Our overheads are extremely low since we rely mostly on volunteers. Your donations directly towards our projects in Myanmar. Therefore, your money is directly creating a better life and future for many young people
