## **Objectives and Activities** 

Under the terms of the Constitution dated 25[th] September 2019, the Trustees have the responsibility of pursuing the objective of the Charity which is to provide community based athletics and associated leisure activities. 

Cambridge Harriers was formed in 1890 and so is over 130 years old and has helped many thousands of people enjoy the sport of athletics over this time 

The club is based in the Greenwich and Bexley Boroughs of South East London with a track base at Sutcliffe Park Athletics Track in Eltham and a clubhouse in Bexley Village. There is a membership of over 400 and active sections participating in Track and Field events, Cross Country, Fell Running, Road Running and Race Walking. 

## **Structure, Governance and Management** 

The club became a charitable incorporated organisation in December 2019 and is managed by a group of trustees, who are supported by a team of dedicated volunteer coaches, team managers, officials and administrators. The club which was previously an unincorporated association donated all its assets to the charity. 

In 2021 the trustees moved the club’s day to day management from a monthly committee meeting to a 3 monthly board meeting whilst appointing trustees in charge of various portfolios and giving them more power to develop their respective area of the club. The board make up is as follows and we would like to express our thanks for all those who stepped up to these roles.

The charity employs no staff 

In accordance with the Constitution one third of the trustees have to stand down at the AGM but can apply for re-election. Those standing down and seeking re-election are Malcolm Coomber, Christine Bond, Barry Ferguson, & Phil Pape. 



## **Achievements and Performance - Chairman’s Report** 

The year April 22 – March 23 saw continued growth in club membership especially amongst the junior age groups. Membership at the end of the year stood at 495 compared with 430 a year earlier. 

As Chairman I believe this is largely down to improvement in promotion of the club via social media and the schools’ program we organise, along with better organisation and delivery of our coaching program making for a better first and lasting impression for new members. 

The club has an excellent catchment area, access to top class facilities, a growing coaching team and a dedicated band of volunteer team managers, officials, and helpers. 

I believe we are well placed to continue helping all our members with their athletic journey and to make an impression on the National Athletics scene. 

I would like to personally thank all those who have acted as trustees for the year especially those who have taken on responsibility for portfolio’s and who’s own reports are provided below.

## **Finance and General Management by Phil Pape** 

## **Membership** 

This hovers just under 500 and we have managed to hold the membership fee steady for a few years now 

## **Finance** 

Our finances remain strong with good income from our indoor and outdoor opens. We are also receiving more from our work for the London Marathon. Please see the Accounts for further details. 

## **Club House** 

Improvements continue with Wi-Fi and a TV available for functions. The bar income continues to grow steadily. Unfortunately, Colin has decided to stop looking after the Club House after he wanted a say in who could hire it out. 

## **Endurance by Clem Dixon** 

## **Cross Country** 

The 2022/3 season was successful with a record turnout from the senior men. League positions: men static on 4th, women down from 2nd (past 3 seasons) to 3rd. 

We had a record entry of 100 at our 7.5 mile Christmas race and good numbers at our other races. 

The trip to the Nationals at Chester was a big success from both an athletic and a social point of view. We had over 30 runners spread fairly evenly across all age groups / genders. Stand out individuals: Holly Dixon 21st SW, Olly Buck 22nd U15B. Senior Women were 18th team, U15B were 14th. 

Looking ahead to the coming season: our series of Joydens Wood races will take place again, dates are 21st Oct, 30th Dec, 3rd Feb. On the 14th October we will be hosting the first Kent League fixture at Footscray Meadows, so more races and more participants than previously, planning is underway. The Nationals will be in Shropshire next February (near Telford), a weekend away is being planned following our successful trip to Chester last season. 

**Road Running** 



Our new Grand Prix competition has had some success at focusing the club’s runners on a common list of races.  13 of us were at the Folkestone 10 where Dean Lacy was the winner and the men’s team were 2nd. Tom Brooke won the Lydd 20. A good spring marathon season with 30 finishers at London or elsewhere, including 12 PBs. The men had 11 sub 3’s including 2 sub 2:30s. We had a cracking turnout at the Big Half with over 30 running for the club: Bobby Babaker 70:18, Holly Dixon 77:30 the standout performances among many other PBs. 

We hosted an Assembly League fixture at Sutcliffe Park, the first time that we have done this, feedback was very positive. 

## **Fell Running** 

The project to attract more of the Club's members into this type of running has had some moderate success with a few trying it out for the first time. 

## **Coaching by Peter Wishart** 

## **Coaches** 

Throughout the year we have received several enquiries regarding coaching courses. We have provided information on how the Club will support, including covering the cost of courses. Of those who expressed an interest, two have applied for the Assistant Club coach course, and one has completed the course, and has started coaching. All three are active athletes. 

To date we have added one Club Coach (progressing from Assistant Coach) to our coaching portfolio. This has allowed us to expand our coaching activities. 

Earlier in the year we successfully applied for high jump coaching through the England Athletics Track Nights Programme. Thus far the presentation (classroom) session has been delivered. There remain two practical sessions to be arranged. 

In accordance with our Strategic Framework, we have provided (bespoke) polo shirts for our coaches. The total cost for the 19 polo shirts being £808. 

As reported last year, due to the departure of the (then) lead coach, we had to recruit a coach for our Academy programme. We are pleased to announce that recruitment was successful, and the new Academy lead coach has settled in well, and developed a good working relationship with the assistants, thus ensuring the continued success of the programme. 

## **Athletes (Academy)** 

The Academy comprises the Fundamentals (six week) course, and the Intermediate group. 

The Fundamentals course continues to be successful; the current course is at capacity. 

Following the six-week course, participants are invited to join the club. At this point we endeavour place them in either the Intermediate group (for one year), or with one of our established coached groups. 

The Academy programme also provides us with the means by which new assistant coaches can gain experience. This has been the case with the current assistants, who will soon be moving on. 

Since March 2023 to date, 18 new (young) members have joined the club. 

The academy programme continues to be the main recruiting platform, but essentially the means by which we develop physical literacy and athleticism in our youngsters.

- The main account is posting regularly 

- Instagram followers has steadily increased over the last year.  Now have 637 followers (up over 200 in the last year) 

- The individual discipline accounts are being used more 

## **Information at Track** 

The boards at the Sutcliffe Park are being filled more with the club’s information. 

## **Harriers of the Month** 

This is being done regularly now. 

## **Schools Programme – Run by Mick Bond** 

## Oct 22 

- Great turnout of over 400 kids, from 14 schools across the borough for the Greenwich Schools Cross Country held in Avery Hill Park. 

## Mar 23 

- Teacher’s course sold out with 18 teachers and two club coaches attending. 

## Summer 23 

- 3 x Cambridge Cup fixtures held with 12 girls’ schools and 8 boys schools competing. 

- Greenwich Schools T&F championships successfully organised with separate dates for boys and girls. Entries from 18 girls’ schools and 15 boys’ schools. 

## **Officials by Barry Ferguson** 

## **Electronic Timing System** 

Last year we invested in a new photo finish camera which has improved the quality of the images during meets, particularly indoors and during the evening events. 

This year we have gone a step further by adopting the Roster management software, as recommended by UK Athletics. This covers the different aspects of handling the entries, seeding and posting results fairly quickly online. 

It proved problematic for the first BMC/Open of this year and has now settled down as we get a better understanding of the different features which the developers are still evolving. 

Meanwhile, we continue to use the system for our home fixtures and to hire it out to other parties. 



## **Officials** 

Finding new officials continues to be a matter of concern. 

We now mourn the loss of Tony Wright, who was a loyal Timekeeper for more than 20 years and a Charlton Athletic supporter. He died in June from Diabetes. He was followed by John Moules who started many of our meets at Sutcliffe Park, who died from cancer in July. 

Meanwhile, we have a new marksman in Graham Maynard and a new starter in Phil Pape who has been a marksman for several years.

Jan Clifford who is now a Level 4 track judge, has agreed to take over as Officials Secretary, and is already doing a sterling job with limited resources. 

## **Track and Field by Mick Bond** 

The summer of 2022 saw the return of full League competition following Covid restriction in the previous two years and our team performed admirably with senior, U20/U17 and u15/U13 teams all getting promoted in their respective leagues. Our pre-season young athletes meeting saw over 120 athletes competing half of which were non-members and many of whom subsequently joined. Our summer open meetings were very well supported as were the indoor 60’s during the winter of 2022-23. Club members were offered discount rates for the events, and both made excellent contributions to the club’s finances. 

Our use of Sutcliffe Park track was restricted during the year due to the Centre's Gymnastics program, but the end of the year saw the completion of a new indoor gymnastics program and a return to much wider use of the indoor and outdoor tracks for club members. 

I would like to thank all those who have acted as Team managers during the year, officiated at meetings or put in the leg work to make our indoor and outdoor meetings successful.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31/03/2023. 

- **Responsibilities and** As the charity trustees of the Trust, you are responsible for the preparation **basis of report** of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). 

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

I have completed my examination.  I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
