COMMUNITY - We believe in the ethos of inclusion, leading to a friendly, vibrant, and diverse community where our coaches, volunteers and players can work together with a sense of unity.

2020
Our first year of operation. With the loan of tables from Derby & District Table Tennis Association, we first opened in February 2020 (on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings), at the West End Community Centre. However, having been open for only 6 weeks, we were then obliged to suspend activities on March 17[th] as the result of the first national lockdown.
During August 2020, after a relaxation of Covid restrictions, and with the help of a grant from Sport England, we had the opportunity to relocate and create a dedicated table tennis centre at St Michael’s in the Dairyhouse Road. After the installation of new lighting and significant refurbishing, we formally opened the venue on September 1[st] .
Unfortunately, we were required to close again, on October 31[st] (precisely two months after having opened), due a second national lockdown. This was followed immediately by Tier restrictions, then a third national lockdown.
Having moved to St Michael’s, our priorities were developing the facilities, attracting new members and stabilising finances. Although not at the new venue long enough to have grown player numbers to a level whereby operating costs were covered, the decision to move was validated - the new club has proven extremely popular, both amongst Derby’s table tennis fraternity and local residents.
Although not without challenges, we should be very proud of what has been achieved in 2020 - creating a full-time table tennis centre in central Derby with excellent playing conditions and an enthusiastic and growing membership. After a successful year securing grants to secure our stability, we look to increase this activity in the next 12 months. Also, because 2020 was focussed on developing the new centre, we need to progress our community objectives, these will be addressed when re-opening in 2021.

With a little help from our friends
2021 — Our development focus
We believe that what sets Derby Community Table Tennis Club apart from most other sports institutions is that we are both a sports club and a community organisation. We see our sport as a vehicle for improving health, celebrating diversity and building a stronger community. Looking forward, and subject to Covid restrictions, we intend to focus 2021 development activities on two complementary areas:
SPORTING OBECTIVES
Develop the St Michael’s table tennis centre by:
-
Improving facilities - with changing rooms and café/social area
-
Increasing usage - offering practice, training, coaching and competition
-
Increasing membership - adults, juniors, over 50s and women only sessions
-
Increasing manpower - recruiting volunteers and part-time specialists
-
Balancing finance - increasing income from commissioned activities, fundraising and membership to balance operating costs
COMMUNITY OBJECTIVES
Develop partnerships, make table tennis accessible to:
-
Those with learning disabilities or special educational needs (SEN)
-
Children in receipt of pupil premium
-
Vulnerable young people and children at risk of exploitation
-
