Review of Activities and Achievements
Below is a list of the main activities undertaken by Lions Club of Exeter in 2021 to 2022.
Reference is made against activities that are reflected in the accompanying accounts. The knock-on effects of the pandemic resulted in reduced income compared to previous years and ongoing Covid restrictions during the first part of the period restricted our activities.
The trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.
Newspaper Recycling
Members collect newspapers from a number of sources and transport it to a Local Authority recycling centre where it is weighed and credit given according to the weight. The funds raised from this activity is then given to local good causes.
Message in a Bottle
Exeter Lions Club have been providing the Message in a Bottle Service in the Exeter area for many years. The purpose of the Lions Message in a Bottle scheme is a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location, the fridge - to place a small plastic bottle in fridges of the infirm and elderly and particularly those living on their own so that emergency services can easily find the bottle which contains contact details plus information about their health issues and medication.
Food Bank
Exeter Lions Club supports the Exeter Food bank on a regular basis by providing funds to purchase essential items which the public haven’t donated.
Welfare Support
Exeter Lions Club has supported a number of local charities, such as Westbank Community Care, that provide essential services to those most in need. In particular we have helped elderly people suffering with dementia, through lunch clubs etc. Further support is planned following the lifting of Covid restrictions.
Car Park Marshalling for various charity events
Exeter Lions Club members act as Car Park Marshalls at various charity events, and on a regular basis for the Exeter Foundation a charity set up by Exeter Chiefs Rugby Football Club to raise funds on match days which is then divided between local charities. This was suspended during Covid restrictions.
Refugees from Ukraine
Since March 2022, Exeter Lions have been helping to raise funds to support the Lions Clubs International Ukrainian Refugee Appeal, by raffling Easter Eggs and through other activities.
