## **Review of Activities and Achievements**

Below is a list of the main activities undertaken by Lions Club of Exeter in 2020 to 2021.

Reference is made against activities that are reflected in the accompanying accounts. Most of this period coincided with National Lockdown and Lions activities were severely curtailed as a result.

The trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.

## **Hot Food Project**

With the help of a grant from the National Lottery, Exeter Lions have supported two local projects to provide hot meals for families experiencing hardship during the Covid pandemic. This included the purchase of containers and kitchen equipment as well as ingredients.

## **Newspaper Recycling**

Members collect newspapers from a number of sources and transport it to a Local Authority recycling centre where it is weighed and credit given according to the weight. The funds raised from this activity is then given to local good causes.

## **Message in a Bottle**

Exeter Lions Club have been providing the Message in a Bottle Service in the Exeter area for many years. The purpose of the **Lions Message in a Bottle** scheme is a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location, the fridge - to place a small plastic bottle in fridges of the infirm and elderly and particularly those living on their own so that emergency services can

easily find the bottle which contains contact details plus information about their health issues and medication.

## **Food Bank**

Exeter Lions Club supports the Exeter Food bank on a regular basis by providing funds to purchase essential items which the public haven’t donated.

## **Welfare Support**

Exeter Lions Club has supported a number of local charities such as Westbank Community Care, Devon Freewheelers and Headway that provide essential services to those most in need.

Also, a mobility scooter was purchased to assist a child with disabilities in attending school.

## **Dementia Support**

Up until Covid 19 Lockdown, Exeter Lions Club was supporting St Thomas Memory Cafe once a month with afternoon session for dementia sufferers and their carers in a number of ways. Members of the club attended as volunteer helpers for the sessions and the club paid the annual rent for the hire of the room and paid towards a proportion of the Organisers annual wages. This support will resume once restrictions are lifted but in the meantime Exeter Lions funded a Christmas party for the group.

## **Diabetes Awareness**

Exeter Lions Club and other local Lions Clubs have been involved with a Diabetic awareness stand at the Devon County Show for almost twenty years.

Previously, Exeter Lions have teamed up with Exeter Diabetes UK Group to put on a Know Your Risk event in the High Street and it is planned to put on a similar event at the stadium of Exeter Chiefs Rugby Football Club.

## **Car Park Marshalling for various charity events**

Exeter Lions Club members act as Car Park Marshalls at various charity events, and on a regular basis for the Exeter Foundation a charity set up by Exeter Chiefs Rugby Football Club to raise funds on match days which is then divided between local charities. This was suspended during Covid restrictions.
