Hernia surgery,**<br>**however, is the most common general**<br>**surgical procedure performed worldwide,**<br>**including in Tanzania where there are an**<br>**estimated 800,000 hernias currently**<br>**requiring treatment.** **The morbidity rate is**<br>**very high due to a lack of resources,**<br>**training and inadequate procedures. The**<br>**Project is proposing to adopt a well-**<br>**established procedure using mesh for**<br>**hernia repair, rather than a traditional**<br>**suture plication technique.**<br>**Phase 1 of the Project was undertaken in**<br>**March 2020, when 72 surgeons (of all**<br>**grades) and 5 centres were involved.**<br>**Feedback and results were again very**<br>**encouraging. The centres continue to use**<br>**the Mesh technique and in the first year**<br>**up to 150  operations were performed**<br>**with  no recurrences.**<br>**The Charity has liaised with the**<br>**University of Winchester and has**<br>**completed the 1st phase of a research**<br>**project which involved teaching/coaching**<br>**our Tanzanian clinical counterparts**<br>**techniques in undergoing qualitative**<br>**research using the results obtained in**<br>**Phase 2.**<br>**Progress has been very slow in the last**<br>**year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.**|
