PRINCIPAL OBJECTS
-
To preserve and protect human life in Kenilworth, Stoneleigh, Ashow and Leek Wootton (the community) by the provision of training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED)
-
To support the acquisition and maintenance of 24/7 publicly accessible AED’s registered with The Circuit (The National Defibrillator Network) in strategic locations across the community to provide broad geographical coverage
ACTIVITY FOR THE REPORTING PERIOD
-
KHS’ CPR training sessions in the community focused on existing organisations as opposed to open training sessions, the latter still being adversely affected by the lingering concerns over the Covid pandemic. 5 group training sessions were held in the year: 3 for the Covid 19 Vaccination Centre volunteers; 1 for Kenilworth Mothers Union; and 1 for Warwickshire Golf Club Ladies division.
-
The annual CPR training session for Kenilworth School took place in April but was limited to a presentation only, as distinct from hands on practice, recognising the continuing concerns over Covid.
-
Talks on KHS activities were given to Kenilworth Mothers Union and also to Kenilworth Catholic Women’s League – both talks leading to training sessions, that for KCWL being arranged for February 2023
-
During the period KHS facilitated the acquisition and installation of AED’s at Kenilworth Rugby Football Club (Cow patch) and at Avonvale vets
Practice, funded entirely by KRFC and Avonvale respectively , bringing the total number of AED’s 24/7 publicly accessible in the community and registered with The Circuit to 24. Discussions continue with various third parties relating to the installation of additional publicly accessible AED’s across the community
-
10.A number of instances occurred in the year where The Circuit advised that a KHS AED may have been used following a 999 call but in only one case, involving a resident of Castle Brook Care Home, was the AED actually used. Sadly in that case the elderly person did not survive.
-
11.Some AED’s reached the point where replacement pads were time expired and KHS funded and replaced 8 pairs of pads in the year, including the replacement required for the Castle Brook Care Home AED. No replacement batteries have yet been required
-
12.Two of our Trustees continue to sit on Steering Groups for Warwick University Medical School: Neil Morris on the Optimising the Location of Public Access Defibrillators Steering Group and Nicky Schofield on the Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest Outcomes Steering Group.
-
13.Towards the end of the year KHS received a claim alleging an infringement of Trade Mark in relation to the use of the word “HeartSafe” making various demands as to our future conduct. After an initial exchange of correspondence with the claimant’s lawyers, KHS took pro bono advice from a lawyer specialising in Intellectual Property. On 30 July 2022 a robust defence was submitted arguing that “HeartSafe” is in common usage and there were grounds for believing that KHS would have a strong case for instituting Invalidation Proceedings under the Trade Marks Act if the claimant pressed their claim. At the time of this report nothing further has been heard from the claimant in response to the KHS letter of 30 July 2022.
