## **Activities and achievements in the year**

During the year, the club has met and achieved many challenges and has provided an excellent cricket and community facility for its members, players and the local community. Despite the obvious disruption caused by the continuation of the global COVID-19 pandemic especially in the first half of the year, the club has continued to develop its facilities and is well placed in all areas to continue its progression on and off the field.

## **Key achievement includes:**

- Purchase of new picnic and seating benches.

- Opening of the club’s facilities during tight social restrictions.

- Purchase of new sight screens via Community Recovery Fund grant.

- Competing and developing at junior and senior level.

- New gazebos purchased for events.

- The club was also successful in applying and gaining a number of grants through the year including the ECB, Wigan Brighter Borough fund and the community recovery fund through Wigan Council.

On the cricket field, the season started under strict restrictions including the prohibition of indoor changing. To counter this and to enable adequate social distancing the committee approved the purchase of gazebos as outdoor dressing rooms in line with government and ECB guidance. This enabled players to operate in a well ventilated and safe space whilst providing cover from the

elements. The gazebos will continue to be used for cricket and community events for the foreseeable future.

Both junior and senior sections for the second consecutive year had to abandon their respective pre season programs as COVID restrictions imposed by the government and sanctioned by the ECB ordered the cessation of all indoor sporting activity.

When restrictions on practice and training were lifted and following a comprehensive and detailed risk assessment the club’s junior and senior sections gradually reintroduced socially distanced training sessions in line with ECB regulations.

When the season started, all cricket was subject to being played on an adaptive basis with contact between players prohibited including not using dressing rooms to change and cricket teas being forbidden. These restrictions remained in place for a large part of the season requiring risk assessments and a more measured approach to playing.

Within the junior section, the club entered teams at under 9s, under 11s, under 13s and under 15s age groups. Despite restrictions, the clubs juniors enjoyed a full season at each age group continuing the development of all our junior sides.

Following an enforced break in 2020 due to COVID-19 the club also successfully reintroduced our very successful All Stars program, culminating in 39 children signing up to the sessions. The session ran from May through to August in line with ECB plans. Following the conclusion of the official program, the club obtained funding from the ECB to continue the sessions free of charge to children from the local community.

At senior level the club ran three senior teams. The first and second XI playing in the Bolton Cricket League and the Third/Development team playing in the West Lancashire Cricket League.

On the field the first XI enjoyed a mixed start to the season but due to contribution from our home grown players and an exceptional year from our club professional Zain Abbas, including breaking the record for the highest individual score in the clubs history 185 Not Out, the side finished the year well and eventually finished second in the association league.

The second XI also mirrored the club’s premier team at the start of the season but through a good mixture of youth and experience the side had a fantastic second half of the season and won the association league.

I would like to take the opportunity to place on record my gratitude to first and second team captains Calum Barlow and Tom Mather for their tremendous contributions to the senior section. Both Calum and Tom have led their teams with great passion, dedication and skill throughout the year and have been a credit to themselves and the club. I would also like to further thank Calum who due to the birth of his daughter will be stepping down as captain of our first team. Calum has proven to be a great leader as well as a vital player within the team for many seasons and steps down with our thanks and best wishes for the future.

At Third/Development team level the team continued to provide a great platform for our developing players under the guidance of Paul O’Neil as manager and Daniel Hudspith as captain. The team, I’m

sure, will continue to act as a valuable link for development into second and first team cricket for many years to come.

## **Financial Records**

The full financial records for the club are provided in the treasurer’s annual accounts.

The clubs annual accounts are available to all members and via companies house in accordance with Limited Company and Charity Commission requirements.

Within the accounts are details of the club’s cash reserves. The club holds no debts.

## **2021 Summary**

Following a very difficult year in 2020 the clubs committee came into the year with a level of trepidation based on the constantly changing Covid-19 landscape.

To manage the club on and off the field proved to be a huge challenge for everyone associated with it. I would like to place on record my personal gratitude to all our playing and social members, who throughout the year showed their continued generosity and loyalty, supporting the club in many ways.

On reflection, 2021 proved to be a very enjoyable year for the club and acted as a transitional year coming out of COVID-19 restrictions returning us to some semblance of normality.

On and off the field, members of the club enjoyed the year and as we move into the clubs 150[th] year and the celebrations that this will undoubtedly bring we have much to be positive about and I would personally like to thank the committee and all club members for their contributions.
