## **Silkstone Common Sports and Recreation Association. Charity No:1186428 Date 2025/26**

## **Brief synopsis.**

In 1997/8 we, the residents of Silkstone Common lost the focal point, of our community, THE VILLAGE HALL, located in the recreation ground, the entrance is off the road. Hall Royd Walk, it was destroyed by fire, it served for our young and the not so young residents, these facilities had been available for over 90 years, fostering sport and social events, we had a close, warm and inviting community spirit, together with the wellbeing of our village, it was at the forefront of all our residents in Silkstone Common.

Significantly in the last 20 years our village has become fragmented and new residents have not experienced that close community spirit, togetherness and wellbeing that our people of the village have still to offer.

We have a large recreation ground, 4.6 acres, capable of facilitating many different field sports, we need a new sports pavilion to support the external sports and facilitate internal social activities.

Longer term objective is to offer a home for our famous “Old Silkstone Band”, a very prestigious member of the brass band circles.

The ground is held in Trust for the Charity CISWO, by BMBC (Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council), held on file as a community asset, Charity Land.

A proposal to replace the old pavilion has been under discussion for several years and was the subject of a planning application being accepted and passed for the new pavilion to be built, in 2001, however, the pavilion has never been built.

We need a new building to fulfil the current needs of a vibrant community with a large and thriving increased numbers of families, providing good disabled access and facilities for the club’s disabled section.

The project has from the outset involved both local residents and other involved with it. It is a major community project to which numerous volunteers have already donated substantial time and resources.

We are still pursuing a Lease for the land which is becoming a major task and over 7,000 of volunteer has been hours, spent maybe more, BMBC are reluctant to give us the land and restore a facility for all our community and not just for junior football. A village hall will give us the facility we require to facilitate and to honour our charity governance, toilets is a necessity for elderly and disabled residents to watch their children play.

## **BACKGROUND**

Silkstone Common Community has a long proud sports and social history. The football club’s first game is thought to have been played in 1925, when the existing ground was created and in 1926 became a Charity facility.

Although Silkstone Common is a village, the residents have grown year on year, ideally situated now to embrace once again the community spirit back into sport and social activities.

Education will play a major role in the use of the pavilion we are on the trail of The Huskar Pit Disaster a major historic and very sad happening, local school Silkstone Common J & I School, will use the facility, we have reserved space for a classroom, a massive education advantage.

The added benefit to education is: schools from around the borough will be able to use the facility without ever crossing a road accessing the historic trails as mentioned.

## **This year Progress. (2025/26)** .

We have maintained our secured rent for the football pitch from BMBC within the SCMWRG, and the season 2025/26, 4 junior teams will play football this year, the emphasis will be concentrated on juniors and the long term plan is in operation and we have introduce a senior team.

The adult team have to play at Thurgoland due to the lack of changing rooms,Thurgoland have changing rooms, inclusive of showers.

This is a significant step to fulfil our expectations for securing a 25 year lease for the Silkstone Common Miners Welfare Recreation Ground, from the Trust of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.
