The trustees present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 31 October 2021. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
## **Objectives and aims**
Though this CIO was registered on 18th November 2019, CinemaItaliaUK has, in a previous guise, been promoting Italian culture by bringing the best of its cinema to the UK since 2014. Its objective as a CIO is to advance the education of the public in the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the arts, particularly the art of Italian film by the establishment and maintenance of a film society. Our dedicated team works to design and deliver a curated offer of screenings, festivals, and talks that go beyond the mainstream, spark insightful conversations, and encourage a rich and meaningful exchange between cultures. Whether it is the latest release, a classic's screening anniversary, or a Q&A with an Italian director, CinemaItaliaUK is likely to have programmed an event on it.
## **Significant activities**
When the pandemic of COVID-19 started spreading and in March 2020 most activities had to shut down in the UK, CinemaItaliaUK stopped all its programming in person. Between November 2020 and September 2021, the charity launched two UK premieres and ran two festivals on its bespoke online viewing platform:
- **Gli Uomini d’Oro** ; (2019, Vincenzo Alfieri) UK premiere of the caper comedy starring Giampaolo Morelli and Matilde Gioli, launched in March 2021 when the CinemaItaliaUK player first went online.
- **Donne di mafia** ;Launched in March 2021 as part of a broader research project heralded by Dr Felia Alum (University of Bath) and funded by the Leverhulme Trust. Showcasing six among classic and contemporary documentaries and feature films over the course of three days, the first edition of Donne di mafia shed a light upon women in Italian mafias by exploring their portrayal in contemporary Italian cinema. The programme of Q&As with authors and experts complementing the screenings challenged the assumption that women in organised crime are often thought of as 'agency-less' secondary figures. The programme included feature documentaries **Gelsomina Verde (2019, Massimiliano Pacifico)** and **Diario di una Siciliana Ribelle (1998, Marco Amenta)** followed by a panel on documentary and mafia women with the directors chaired by journalist Clare Longrigg (day 1); **La Terra dei Santi (2015, Fernando Muraca)** and **Anna – Per Amor Vostro (2015, Giuseppe Gaudino)** followed by a live Q&A session with Judge Alessandra Camassa, interviewed by journalist Giorgio Zanchini (day 2); musical **Ammore e Malavita (2017, Manetti Bros.)** and **I Cento Passi (2000, Marco Tullio Giordana)** followed by a closing panel with Clare Longrigg, Dr Felia Allum, Emanuela Truffo and Maddalena Stornaiuolo (day 3). The average attendance for each day was 770, with 20 people logging into each session per day.
- **Omaggio a Manfredi** ; CinemaItaliaUK designed, implemented, and delivered an online special event to celebrate the work of Nino Manfredi, born 100 years ago. Launched in May 2021 and funded by the Italian Consulate as part of #vivereallitaliana initiative, a curated mini season of three restored feature films starring one of the outstanding figures of commedia all'italiana was available for a month for streaming on CinemaItaliaUK Player. The films selected are **Per Grazia Ricevuta (Between Miracles , 1971)** , **Brutti Sporchi e Cattivi (Down and Dirty , 1976)** , and **C'eravamo Tanto Amati (We All Loved Each Other So Much, 1974** ). A recorded Q&A hosted by CinemaItaliaUK with Nino Manfredi's son, Luca, our Trustee Roberta Licurgo and our Programmer Lorenzo Tamburini discussed the actor's legacy in Italian cinema and beyond and introduced the screenings to the audience. The Q&A were available on CinemaItaliaUK's website and its social media outlets for the duration of the season.
- **Pietro Marcello’s double bil** l; In collaboration with New Wave Films, CinemaItaliaUK launched on its platform an exclusive bundle featuring awarding winning fiction **Martin Eden** (2019) and lesser known but equally stunning documentary **Bella e Perduta** (2015). The award-winning, internationally acclaimed second narrative feature by Pietro Marcello is a distinctive and original adaptation of Jack London’s bildungsroman starring charismatic Luca Marinelli and Jessica Cressy.
Once screening in person resumed, CinemaItaliaUK organised the following special events:
- **Freaks Out** ; (Sept 29, 2020) CinemaItaliaUK in collaboration with Raicom organised an industry only screening of the latest Manetti Bros. feature, **Freaks Out** , in the boutique Garden Cinema. The event was well attended by UK based distributors.
- T **he Hand of God** ;(Oct 9, 2020) CinemaItaliaUK partnered with Netflix to offer to all members of the Friend Of programme a free screening of Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar nominee and latest feature, **The Hand of God** . The event took place at the May Fair Hotel and sold out.
- **Fellini degli Spiriti** ; (Oct 28, 2020) CinemaItaliaUK organised two screenings of Selma dall’Olio’s documentary to celebrate the work of Federico Fellini, born 100 years ago. Funded by the Italian Embassy, the event took place at the Garden Cinema and sold out. A Q&A with director Selma Dall’Olio followed each screening.
Since its launch in March 2021, the membership programme **Friends Of CinemaItaliaUK** went from strength to strength. At the end of October 2021, there were 131 signups of which 17.5% were from outside of London. We aim to increase the number of members by at least a third in the next financial year and to further expand the set of discounts and advantages that come with membership.

## **Public benefit**
CinemaItaliaUK's primary beneficiaries are the segment of cinema audiences that is interested in Italian films and culture, as well as in learning Italian as a second language and live in the UK. All our screenings are in Italian with English subtitles and, between November 2019 and February 2020 when they took place in person, were all sold out. Except for Amarcord, all the films selected and presented were also UK premieres, making our events and connected activities a unique opportunity for all Italian film lovers to attend.
Our ongoing partnerships with several cinemas and film organisations in London (CinemaItaliaUK is a member of the BFI FAN Network) and nationwide mean that we can expand our reach to different segments of cinema audiences. CinemaItaliaUK also has a longstanding history of collaborating with Italian governmental agencies to design and deliver cultural events connected to Italian film, namely the Consulate General of Italy in London and the Italian Embassy in the UK. Finally, CinemaItaliaUK has been building collaborations and sponsorships with several Italian commercial partners in London - among them the Italian Bookshop, London One Radio and Etna coffee.
The development of an online streaming platform and the connected online library allowed CinemaItaliaUK to expand its outreach, now almost entirely London based, to various other parts of the UK. Furthermore, it will lay the foundations for starting collaborations with schools and other organisations in London and beyond, which teach Italian as a second language.
We are satisfied that we undertake all of our work within our charitable objectives and the public benefit requirement as defined in Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011.
## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
## **Reserves policy**
CinemaItaliaUK's reserves policy is to maintain sufficient levels of reserves to enable operating activities to continue, taking into account the potential risks and contingencies that may arise from time to time. The Trustees have reviewed the charity's needs for reserves in line with the guidance issued by the Charity Commission and have set, and will be setting, reserves at a level equivalent to three months running costs. The policy is reviewed annually.

The charity is controlled by its governing document and constitutes a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).

I report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 October 2021, which are set out on pages 5 to 9.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
1. The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
2. Having satisfied myself that an audit is not required, it is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act; and
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act, and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities, have not been met; or
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## 1. **Accounting Policies**
## 1.1. **Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements**
The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
## 1.2. **Taxation**
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
## 1.3. **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. There are currently no Restricted funds.
## 1.4. **Income**
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
## 1.5. **Expenditure**
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

The total staff costs and employee benefits for the reporting period was nil.
