| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | &Piano continues to develop, and 2024 was another extremely fruitful year for the charity. For our 2024 festival we celebrated the music of Madeleine Dring, with it being the centenary year of her birth. Over the year we produced 11 events featuring 22 performers. 4 events featured a total of 43 participants, and our 3rdSchool Recital tour visited 8 schools, engaging with approximately 1200 secondary school students. Over the course of the year we: ● Commissioned our first ever piece of music for the festival, engaging Halifax-born, Manchester-based emerging composer Alice Beckwith to write a collection of ‘Five Armitage Songs’ using poems by Huddersfield-born poet laureate Simon Armitage, inspired by Madeleine Dring’s popular collection ‘Five Betjeman Songs’. The premiere performance was given by Soprano Sarah Fox, Tenor Joe Shovelton and Artistic Director Christopher Pulleyn at the closing event of the 2024 festival on 25th May. “The quality and appeal of the music was stunning, I brought someone who wasn't sure about whether he would enjoy it and he was absolutely bowled over by the whole event. The commissioned music was the highlight for me, beautifully composed and performed, exquisite!” (Audience Feedback) ●We successfully bid for an Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant for the 2nd year running to help support the running costs of the festival and the song commission. ●We engaged our largest number of professional musicians to date – including celebrated pianists based in the North including Ros Brown (West End) and Annette Saunders (Opera North) ●We showcased music for Bassoon & Oboe in our instrumental event – two instruments that don’t often get the opportunity to perform chamber music. ●Inspired by our celebration of Madeleine Dring, our Musical Theatre event focused on female composers and librettists, comprising 50% of the programme. ●Had our biggest festival attendance yet, with around 533 people attending over all our festival events. |
|---|---|---|
-
Our 2[nd] classical music open-mic ‘Performance Pub’ featured a record 12 performers this year, and record attendance.
-
● We delivered a composition workshop with students from Greenhead College and the University of Huddersfield, giving them the opportunity to work with composer Alice Beckwith and explore writing for voices.
“The festival is a real asset to the musical life in the Huddersfield area.”
(Audience feedback)
-
We successfully delivered a 4 day, 8 school recital tour around secondary schools around Huddersfield and Halifax, featuring cellist Amy Jolly, and soprano Phoebe Smith, who was also able to share some of our newly commissioned songs with students, as an example of classical music still being written and composed today, and from a local poet and composer.
-
We also delivered our first ever Christmas event – ‘Christmas around the Piano’ – at the suggestion of local arts venue North of England Centre for Music & Arts (NECMA), based in Marsden. We used it as an opportunity to share a range of traditional, classical & musical theatre Christmas repertoire with professional singer Aimee Fisk, but also collaborated with the local ‘Beaumont Singing Academy’ to provide an opportunity for younger singers to perform a solo, as well as come together to perform small ensembles. The event featured 8 young singers and was a great opportunity to present an accessible event of classical and non-classical music, as well as an opportunity to give younger singers the chance to listen to a professional classical singer and aspire them to continue learning and developing their voice.
“What a fantastic event. Intimate and heartwarming. Really loved such an interesting mix of music. A great way to get us in the mood for Christmas!” (Christmas event audience feedback)

| Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period |
Para 1.21 | The charity finished 2024 with a moderate surplus of £2,101 and a closing bank balance of £3,035, with no outstanding debts. The charity has no outstanding restricted funding funds remaining. It is encouraging that we were successful with a 2ndbid to Arts Council England, although we are very aware that funding is increasingly competitive and costs have risen significantly. We are continuing to plan our future festivals around potential funding applications, with alternative budget plans in case we are unsuccessful. |
|---|---|---|
| Statement explaining the policy for holding reserves stating why they are held |
Para 1.22 | The trustees of the charity agreed that a minimum reserve of £1500 should be held by the charity. This amount helps us to begin planning for the following year’s festival and from our annual financial history, with no recurring overheads, appears to be an acceptable amount to hold. |
